Final Fantasy VII Revelation wraps up Square Enix’s epic trilogy in 2027, wishlist now

It’s a neat milestone that Producer Yoshinori Kitase reflected on while introducing the newest title:
“Final Fantasy VII, first released in 1997, has been beloved by fans for many years and has since become a ‘legend’ in its own right,” he said. “The Final Fantasy VII Remake Series that began in 2020 with everyone’s passionate support is finally reaching its climactic finale with Final Fantasy VII Revelation. The story’s final destination represents my emotions spanning thirty years working on this title, and yet, as the developer, our hands alone cannot turn its final page. It’s only when you, the player, step inside and memorialize this journey that a new ‘legend’ is finally born. We hope you witness the coming together of our hearts, and yours.”
Throughout both Final Fantasy VII Remake and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Cloud Strife put together a team to stop Sephiroth from bringing about the obliteration of their planet. That team is back with some new members. Vincent Valentine and Cid Highwind are new playable characters, alongside Cloud, Tifa Lockhart, Barret Wallace, Red XIII, Yuffie Kisaragi, and Cait Sith.
Revelation will let players explore the game as an open-world RPG. The team is stationed aboard the Highwind, an airship that will open up the world for exploration, allowing players to freely choose their destination. According to Square Enix, “From the outskirts of Midgar, to the sun-drenched Mideel Archipelago, to the warrior nation of Wutai. Simply pick a direction, and set sail.”
All it takes is a “leap of faith,” with the team leaping from the deck of the Highwind and HALO jumping down to the ground seamlessly, ready for adventure.
As the trilogy evolved, the most striking aspect has been taking the original’s turn-based battles and turning them into a slick, deeply customizable, and hybrid combat system that combines real-time action with Tactical Mode. According to Square Enix, that system is “now expanded and perfected with new playable characters and powerful new abilities.”
Vincent Valentine is a gunslinger, capable of firing off rounds with unerring accuracy, but he can also transform into a beast of immense power. When paired in battle with lance-wielding Cid Highwind, who can use his lance to close distances or perform sweeping area-of-effect attacks, the two can join together, with Cid riding beast-mode Vincent into battle.
Revelation will also introduce the FITS system — Function-Integrated Tactical Suitwear — a clothing system that enables players to dress themselves for battle. Unique uniforms will imbue wearers with new movesets. The Warrior will enhance attacks, giving players more aggressive capabilities. The Black Mage focuses on magic, boosting spell-focused combat.
You’ll need those survival suits. Weapons will be returning to the series in Revelation. The overarching story of the series is about the ecological devastation the planet has suffered, and your team is attempting to battle that. Weapons are the planet's last defense; giant creatures rise up, capable of complete destruction. How you take them on is up to you. Bring down the entire team, or split up and conquer.
It will be your choice, though, something that Creative Director Tetsuya Nomura welcomes.
“As creators, we have carefully built and nurtured the Final Fantasy VII series over many years, expanding it through numerous spin-off titles along the way,” he said. “Over time, we believe each fan has developed their own unique interpretation of the story, and our goal has been to bring all of these Final Fantasy VII stories together so that they ultimately converge in the final chapter of the Remake Series. While there may be a mix of excitement and uncertainty, we are confident that this journey will remain an unforgettable experience for years to come.
