1: The EVE Gate – Location: New Eden (Warning: Low-sec system)
In the year 7707 AD, the first known natural wormhole was discovered, transporting the first brave pioneers to a distant cluster of stars which came to be called New Eden; the miraculous passageway itself, along with the structures constructed to maintain it, became known as the EVE Gate.
A great migration soon began, with waves of colonists taking root upon the untouched worlds of New Eden. A second genesis of humanity had begun – but it was not to last. In 8061 AD, the EVE Gate wormhole collapsed, and the unfinished worlds of New Eden became the graveyards of millions – severed from the homeworlds that sustained them. However, a few scattered colonies managed to survive the collapse, regressing into a long era of darkness that saw the history of the old worlds fade into legend and myth. Today, 15,000 years later, the descendants of these survivors comprise the population of the four Empires of New Eden.
A maelstrom of violent cosmic phenomena is all that remains of the wormhole, which can be seen clearly from the system it once opened into – itself called New Eden.
2: The Remains of Steve – Location: C9N-CC (Warning: Null-sec system)
In 2006 (YC108), the player alliance “Ascendant Frontier” deployed the first titan ever constructed by capsuleers – an Avatar-class titan built in secret through months of resource gathering and quiet development. The massive vessel was warmly named “Steve”, and was piloted by the leader of Ascendant Frontier, CYVOK.
Months later, the Band of Brothers alliance attacked the C9N-CC system in Esoteria, bringing a titan of their own, and as nearly all ships in EVE eventually do, Steve was met with a bombastic end in the battle that followed – making the titan both the first ever constructed and the first ever lost.
The wreck of Steve remains in space today as a permanent memorial in C9N-CC, visitable by all who dare to make the journey through null-sec space to reach it.
3: Old Man Star – Location: Old Man Star, Gate to Villore (Warning: Low-sec system
During the years of the Empires’ expansion into space, stargates to new systems were built by sending self-reliant construction ships to the target system via jump drive, where upon arrival a gate would be constructed to pair with its other end. When such a ship was sent from Villore to the Ouperia system in YC11, a miscalculation led to it landing light-years off course and colliding with a massive asteroid. Aware that something had gone wrong, but unwilling to waste more resources on a lost endeavor, the Gallente abandoned the expedition.
However, one crew member had in fact survived the accident: the ship’s drone operator, Ceul Darieux. Carefully repairing what few functions he could, Darieux managed to realign the vessel with its target – but without a working jump drive, the journey would take decades. Darieux spent his next 44 years researching new kinds of drone technology – and upon arriving in Ouperia, now a grey old man, he was able to find a sizable asteroid on which an automated manufacturing facility could be constructed. In time, his stargate was finally completed.
The Federation was shocked when the long-abandoned gate in Villore was activated after so many years, and Darieux returned home a hero. After the media frenzy that followed, he founded the CreoDron corporation, centered on his designs invented over nearly half a century away from home – and after his passing, the Ouperia system was affectionately renamed “Old Man Star”. You can visit Darieux’s gate, and even see the remains of his ship resting alongside it, at the entry to Villore.
4: The Fallen Capsuleers Memorial – Location: Molea system, Planet II, Moon 1
Countless connections and friendships (with a heartwarmingly large number extending into the real world) have been forged between capsuleers the world over. Friendship is the best ship, after all, and in the vast expanse of New Eden there’s nothing more valuable than having friends to fly with.
Tragically, with such bonds between players extending over the nearly 20 years since EVE’s release, some have also come to experience the loss of a someone close – be they simply podded and moved into a new clone (as countless capsuleers are every day), retired altogether from the life of a capsuleer in New Eden, or dearly departed in the world beyond.
In 2007 (YC109), capsuleer Azia Burgi was inspired to create a cemetery in-game for frozen corpses left behind when a player’s capsule is destroyed, interring them with dignity than the bare void of space would not afford them. Though the project began as a roleplay initiative, the “Capsuleer Cemetery” eventually evolved into a place where anyone experiencing loss could leave a humble memorial in the form of a jettisoned cargo container at a player-owned starbase (POS) tower painstakingly maintained by Azia near Molea II’s first moon – and In tribute to the long and heartfelt history of the cemetery and to those memorialized within, a special monument was added to the location in 2020 (YC122).
5: Vyraj Anchorages – Location: Pochven (Warning: Null-sec system)
The Triglavian Collective’s Invasions of Empire space from 2019 - 2020 (YC121 - 122) saw countless capsuleers on both sides of the conflict fight to either secure systems for either the Empires through EDENCOM or to place them under Triglavian control – culminating with the mass-manipulation of local spacetime topology to weave 27 Triglavian-controlled systems into a new “region” of space”: the Domain of Pochven.
This perilous region is split evenly among the three Clades of the Collective, with a massive installation known as a “Vyraj Anchorage” present in each ones’ “home” system. Well in excess of 300km in length along each side, these gargantuan structures are capable of holding even the imposing Xordazh world ark in dock, serving both symbolically and literally as the hearts of the Collective’s territory in New Eden.
6: Arek'Jaalan Site One: Antiquus – Location: Eram
The Arek’Jaalan initiative, launched by a Caldari defector to the Minmatar Republic by the name of Dr. Hilen Tukoss, was for many years a bustling locus for the combined interest, speculations, and research of many passionate capsuleers into the bottomless and distant mysteries of the world of EVE.
Site One: Antiquus, a large-scale installation in the Eram system, eventually coalesced as the centerpiece of the project – funded both materially and financially by capsuleers dedicated to illuminating the unknown. Within, you’ll come across an array of structures labeled with the names of different research projects undertaken – fly up to each one, and an item describing the project, its contributors, and what was learned into your cargohold.
Not long after Site One was completed, Hilen Tukoss departed and disappeared into the domain of the Sleepers following reports of the discovery and scuttling of a once-lost sortie of Helios-class frigates deep in Anoikis (wormhole space) by a capsuleer. Years later, an urgent transmission was received from the doctor, warning of the Drifters’ emergence, and cryptic messages to capsuleer forums warned that Site One had been “compromised” with not a word since. What may eventually become of this facility is unclear – but the legacy of Arek’Jaalan lives on.
7: The Scars of Caldari Prime – Location: Luminaire
The Luminaire system is host to the original homeworlds of both the Gallente and the Caldari – cosmic siblings who would eventually fall into conflict with one another when the Caldari, once a member of the Federation, seceded and formed their own independent State. In the course of the war that followed, and with much effort and loss, Caldari Prime was evacuated and abandoned.
Nearly two centuries later, in YC110 (2008), the ultranationalist Tibus Heth came into power in the State, and made a play during the chaos of the Minmatar Elder Fleet’s disruption of CONCORD and attack on the Amarr Empire (see the next entry), taking control of Caldari Prime once again and installing an orbital blockade fleet – which included the CNS Shiigeru, a Leviathan-class titan. Five years later, following escalting tensions on the planet’s surface, the Shiigeru was moved into low orbit, forcing the Federation to deploy.
In the ensuing battle, which saw both Capsuleer participation in space and Clone Soldier action on the surface, the mighty titan fell, literally – impacting the planet with enough energy to permanently alter the face of Caldari Prime. You can still see the lasting effects of the battle today, a burning array of craters scarring the surface of the tumultuous and tragic planet.
8: Mekhios Graveyard – Location: Sarum Prime
The Minmatar Elder Fleet’s disabling strike against CONCORD and incursion into the regions of the Amarr Empire in YC110, countless Minmatar were liberated from Amarr oppression, and the survivors of the long-concealed Starkmanir Tribe, thought annihilated, were wholly recovered through collaboration with the Ammatar – or rather, Nefantar – and returned to their home.
A taskforce sent into the core of the Empire continued its attack, eventually reaching Sarum Prime. Above the planet Mekhios, the Minmatar, believed themselves victorious when the Amarr abruptly retreated. Moments later, however, an Abaddon-class battleship piloted by royal heir Jamyl Sarum (long assumed dead) appeared alongside an escort of just twelve battleships and fired a single shot: a superweapon bootstrapped from ancient human technology. The superweapon arced from ship to ship, devastating the taskforce and forcing the survivors to hastily retreat.
The remnants of the battle, along with a monument to Empress Jamyl, can be found above Mekhios today. The modified Abaddon and its weapon have long since vanished, but its aftereffects continue to echo across the stars of New Eden – and far beyond.
9: Drifter Hive Site Systems – Location: Anoikis (Threat Level: Deadly)
Ruthless and silent, the Drifters are the waking progeny of the Sleepers, a precursor faction branching from the enigmatic transhuman Jove. Emerging from a crumbling virtual world, the Drifters seemingly believe themselves to be the true inheritors of the legacy of the Jove race’s lost empires.
For those seeking more perilous scenery, "Unidentified Wormhole” sites, which alternate between systems with Jove Observatories, will transport you to one of five Drifter-occupied systems. Take caution, however, even while in high security space – as any Drifter ships nearby will attack with devastating force, should you approach the wormhole. If you manage to pass through (be sure to bookmark your entry!), you’ll be able to observe various vistas – including unique anomalies patrolled by Drifters, a SoE Flotilla, and a special named site: Barbican, Conflux, Redoubt, Sentinel, or Vidette.
The danger only increases within, with Sleeper drones and Drifters actively guarding and moving between an array of locations interlinked by warp gates. In the depths of each site lays a named “Hive” structure surrounded by Sleeper wreckage & corpses and protected by an elite Drifter, as well as a “Nexus” – scattered fields of energized pylons bracketed by two massive vortexes. Though threats are numerous, there are few locations as densely packed and as uniquely fascinating as these systems.
10: The Journey of Katia Sae Monument – Location: Saisio
On 9 March 2019 (YC121), capsuleer Katia Sae of Signal Cartel became the first to ever visit every last system in not only New Eden, but those secluded deep within Anoikis (w-space) as well, all without losing a single ship – a profound accomplishment in the vast and perilous world of EVE.
In honor of this incredible journey, which Katia had begun over a decade earlier in December 2009, the Achuran Stargazers Society – a cultural organization within the Caldari State – installed a monumental tribute to the intrepid Achuran capsuleer in their home system of Saisio. The statue structure towers above the nearby stargate, and depicts Katia holding a hand to the stars, cradling a bright hologram of a solar system – orbited by the cloaked silhouette of an Astero-class frigate.
The Journey of Katia Sae Monument stands both in recognition of a one capsuleer’s self-determined goal, and as a beacon of inspiration for all who seek out opportunity and adventure among the stars.
