Alan Wake 2: The Lake House from Remedy Entertainment brings you back to familiar territory, especially if you’ve already played (or at least started) the base game’s campaign. The Lake House takes you back to Cauldron Lake, to a facility operated by the Federal Bureau of Control (FBC). You'll play as FBC Agent Kiran Estevez, whose routine investigation into the activities of Dr. Jules Mormont and Dr. Diana Mormont (husband-and-wife researchers) takes a sinister turn.

Our Alan Wake 2: The Lake House walkthrough contains all the information you need to lead Agent Estevez to safety. We cover the weapons you can acquire, the computer passwords (which are somewhat akin to puzzles), and more.

Note: This Alan Wake 2: The Lake House guide contains spoilers for the DLC. Proceed with caution.

How to start The Lake House DLC

You can start Alan Wake 2’s The Lake House DLC as long as you own the Alan Wake 2 Deluxe Edition or the base game plus Deluxe Upgrade. From the main menu, simply select “Expansions” and choose "The Lake House” to begin the campaign.

Ground Floor: The map and first computer password

Once you begin Alan Wake 2's The Lake House DLC, open the gate and the main entrance door by using Estevez’s ID Card. At the back-right section of the ground floor, you should find a map. This will give you hints as to the layouts of each floor.

The computer terminal inside Dr. Marmont’s Office requires a password. Here are the hints:

  • The password will never be someone’s birthday, today’s date, or phone numbers.
  • A plaque on the wall mentions that Dr. Marmont became the head researcher on July 18.
  • A frame next to the computer says Hedy Lamarr invented a torpedo guidance device at age 38.

With the above clues, you can input the following password: 0-7-1-8-3-8. This lets you open the small security room to pick up some ammo. Moreover, it allows you to access the elevator.

Sub-Level 1: The Painted Shadows

Use Estevez’s keycard to reach Sub-Level 1. You’ll soon notice that the elevator that you just rode is gone. Don’t worry! We can make it reappear shortly.

Save at the break room. At the back-left section is a room with a cube-like generator. Lift and bring it to the pedestal at the back wall of the main chamber. Then, pull the lever to restore power to the area. Estevez will also make a remark about a gun in this area, though you won’t be able to obtain it until later.

In any case, return to the room adjacent to where you saved your game and flip the switch. This will cause the paintings in the main chamber to shift positions. Once you go back outside, two Painted Shadow enemies will materialize. Here’s what you need to know about these hostile entities:

  • Normal firearms won’t work against them, so don’t bother wasting your ammo or flashlight battery.
  • You’ll acquire a special weapon that can take them out a bit later in the DLC.
  • Ideally, you should just dodge the attacks of these creatures and run past them when possible.
  • On other floors, they will be able to materialize from human-shaped paintings on walls. They’ll strangle Estevez, and you have to rapidly press the 'F' key to break free.

In any case, you’ll see that the elevator has magically appeared at the back of the chamber. Make a run for it and ride it down to Sub-Level 2.

Sub-Levels 2 and 3: The Typewriter Chamber

At Sub-Level 2, there’s a short scene where you get to chat with a Living Painting. After the conversation, take the elevator to Sub-Level 3. In the main area, you’ll notice dozens of typewriters automatically clacking away.

Go through the corridor at the back and pick up the Tactical Pump-Action Shotgun. Estevez will mention that she just looped back to the initial area, so you have to go through the corridor two more times.

On the second loop, several Taken will appear. Use your flashlight boost and firearms to defeat them. Use the flashlight boost to destroy the shadowy nodes that are blocking the way.

On the third loop, keep moving forward to reach the generator room. Inside, you have to place the two generator cubes on the pedestals. Doing so will allow you to flip the switch at the back wall of the Typewriter Chamber. This leads to another chat with the Living Painting.

Sub-Level 2: Holding and Observation Area, Level 2 Keycard, and password

Take the elevator to Sub-Level 2. The Living Painting is gone, so you can explore the floor properly. Inside the holding cell in the middle, you’ll find a writer named Ed, who seems to be oblivious to all the events that are occurring.

Continue further down the hallway. In the small section near the break room, you’ll find a dead researcher and the Level 2 Keycard next to their body. Unlock the nearby room to learn that the computer terminal requires another password. Here are the hints:

  • One researcher’s email states that their anniversary is one week from Friday. The calendar on the wall should tell you that the exact date of the anniversary is September 22.
  • The other clue pertains to a painting designation. In our playthrough, it was the “Brown Shape with Horns,” or number 25.

With the above clues, input 0-9-2-2-2-5 as the password to lift the lockdown. Make your way back to the holding area, but watch out for more Taken that have now been freed.

Sub-Level 1: The Black Rock Launcher special weapon and Level 3 Keycard

Return to Sub-Level 1 and flip the switch near the break room. Run to the opposite side of the main chamber and use the keycard on the panel. Inside the room, you’ll find the Level 3 Keycard, as well as the Black Rock Launcher.

The Black Rock Launcher is the only weapon that can kill Painted Shadow enemies in Alan Wake 2’s The Lake House DLC. However, ammo is quite scarce, and you also need to charge the weapon by holding down the Left Mouse Button before firing.

Note that the Level 3 Keycard allows you to head to the lower sub-levels in the facility. However, you can also check out the remaining rooms on the other floors. There’s one in Sub-Level 2 and a couple in Sub-Level 3. These should give you an idea as to what truly happened to the Mormonts.

Sub-Level 4: The Archive Maze

Head down to Sub-Level 4. This area is a maze filled with many dangers:

  • Whenever you see humanoid paintings on walls, try to avoid them by sprinting. Don’t get too close or Painted Shadows will strangle Estevez.
  • If a Painted Shadow spawns, you can either run past it or use the Black Rock Launcher. Just make sure to save some ammo for later.
  • Follow the twisting corridors until Taken enemies appear. Use your firearms to take out all of them.

Sub-Level 5: The Experiment Room

Eventually, you’ll reach a well-lit room in the middle of the large chamber. Here’s what we did at this juncture:

  • We checked out all the documents and tape recorders on the desks.
  • There’s another computer here, and the password is 6-8-5-2-9-8.
  • Pulling the lever outside the room triggers a quick cutscene.
  • Pulling the light cord three times takes you to a surreal area.

We don’t want to spoil all the details at this point in The Lake House’s campaign. However, there’s a trapped individual that you can talk to. Just move sideways a bit to see the prompt.

The finale and ending

Take the elevator to Sub-Level 5. After the cutscene, you’ll find yourself facing Dr. Diana Mormont. Here’s what you need to watch out for:

  • Mormont has a few notable attacks. She can either punch you or do a charging strike. She also has a ground pound ability.
  • Mormont counts as a Taken enemy, so use your flashlight boost to weaken her and your shotgun to deal damage.
  • As part of a transition phase, she’ll leap on ledges and throw boulders that you need to dodge. Likewise, she’ll summon Painted Shadows, which means you need to defeat them with your Black Rock Launcher.
  • Once Mormont is back on the ground, keep blasting her with your shotgun to finish her off.

With Mormont’s defeat, you’ll be able to interact with the lever to close the Threshold. You can also speak with the Living Painting one last time.

That does it for our Alan Wake 2: The Lake House guide. We hope this walkthrough helps you complete Kiran Estevez’s trek into the unknown.

Alan Wake 2 is available on the Epic Games Store, as are both The Lake House and Night Springs DLCs. Get the whole collection with either the Alan Wake 2 Deluxe Edition or the Deluxe Upgrade (for those who already own the base game).
