Developer MercurySteam and publisher 505 Games have revealed Blades of Fire is coming to Epic Games Store on May 22.  It's an epic action-adventure game where you forge your own highly customizable weapons to fight against the forces of the evil Queen Nerea. Nerea has woven a spell that turns steel into stone, leaving the realm helpless against her horde of abominations. You are Aran de Lira, firstborn of the King's Ward and the only warrior left who can still wield a steel weapon, and it's up to you to save your kingdom from the Queen's treachery.

"MercurySteam’s pedigree for creating unique and beloved games is just one of the many reasons we’re thrilled to partner with them on Blades of Fire,” said Neil Ralley, President of 505 Games. “Their gaming system that transforms weapons customization into an outstanding combat experience is astounding, as is their commitment to telling the best story possible. We can’t wait to share it with the world."

Blades of Fire is a combat-forward 3D action game that challenges you to craft and wield a variety of weapons and armor in your quest for revenge. As you sidestep and block your way through its heated battles, you find "Forge Scrolls" that allow you to further hone your smithing skills. As you go deeper into the game, you can experiment with its seven different weapon families and 30 different Forge Scrolls, each with their own strengths and weaknesses, to determine which one suits each challenge that Nerea throws your way.

Blades of Fire's in-depth combat system requires more than just brute force and good reflexes. Your performance will rely heavily on the weapon that you choose (or create), with important characteristics like length, weight, penetration, durability, and edge quality all factoring into the proceedings. Slow and heavy weapons might deal a good chunk of damage on a hit, but your fleeter foes may be able to easily dodge or interrupt such attacks. Quicker weapons have certain advantages, but if you can't pierce a tough foe's armor, you'll find yourself overwhelmed in a hurry.

You'll need a variety of tools to take down the 50-plus enemy types in Blades of Fire, including undead, strange creatures, and the Queen's own guard. It'll take some investigation and experimentation to learn each enemy's moveset and vulnerabilities. You'll need the right type of weapon to smash, stab, or slash your foes down, so take advantage of the modular parts that the game throws at you, including runes, blades, edges, hilts, and alloys.

Luckily, your Aran gets a bit of help from his companion Adso, a scholar who isn't great at swinging a sword, but makes up for it in depth and breadth of knowledge. He has the know-how you need to overcome all the monstrosities in your way, including tips that may help you snatch victory from the jaws of a certain defeat. He also speaks the forgotten language of the divine forgers, which is certain to come in handy in this smithing-oriented quest. It's up to you to battle your way through ancient castles, expansive palaces, and other such environments on your way to taking back the kingdom.

Developer MercurySteam has quite the pedigree; they're perhaps best-known for developing Metroid Dread and the Castlevania: Lords of Shadow series, but they also worked on other notable titles, such as Clive Barker's Jericho. 505 Games' recent output includes Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons, Control, and Death Stranding.

Blades of Fire will come to Epic Games Store on May 22. Those who pre-purchase the game will receive exclusive content and a 10% discount.
