Combat in Immortals of Aveum can feel overwhelming at first, but cracking the code behind its magical combat isn't as terribly difficult as it seems. In fact, you already know more than you probably realize. In this Immortals of Aveum guide, we’ll teach you all about magic in combat and the Talents you can use to make yourself a better Magni.

Immortals of Aveum casts you as Jak, a streetwise nobody full of invisible potential that reveals itself in a moment of crisis. Jak discovers that he’s a Triarch Magnus, a rare form of Magni who can wield Blue, Red and Green Magic. With his newfound powers, he takes sides in the Everwar—the millennia-long battle over the control of magic—hoping to become an Immortal, who are the most powerful magic users on Aveum.

Just about everything in Immortals of Aveum flows from that magic-infused story, including combat, which has four basic components: magic, Totems, Furies, and Augments.

Magic Combat

Magic is the core of fighting in Immortals of Aveum, and in this fantastical world, fighting with spells is actually a lot like fighting with guns. Making that connection early and often makes you a faster, more effective fighter.

In Call of Duty, you have guns that shoot bullets. In Immortals Aveum, you have Sigils that shoot magic. It's a one-to-one comparison.

There are three types of magic in Immortals of Aveum, each of which correspond with a traditional first-person shooter weapon:

Blue Magic / Force Magic is effectively your sniper rifle. Use it at a distance, and aim for the head.
Red Magic / Chaos Magic is effectively your shotgun. Use it when enemies are close.
Green Magic / Life Magic is effectively your automatic rifle. Use it when enemies are somewhere in the middle.

Successful combat in Immortals of Aveum is all about matching your magic with your situation. As you play, you’ll get more Sigils that offer variations on these themes, but you don’t have to worry about that at first. In fact, if you play the early game as a jack of all trades, master of none—opting not to specialize in any one flavor of magic— you’ll own the battlefield. Even better, because you’ll have experience with all three types of magic spells, you’ll be in the perfect place to make your final decision about specializing in one down the road—or not.

Let’s walk through a scenario to show you how it works. Imagine encountering four enemies: far away, there’s an archer, picking away at your health with arrows; up close are two knights, quickly closing the distance to you. Behind the knights, there's a 10-foot giant monstrosity swinging a spiked flail in the middle distance, plodding its way toward you.

It’s stressful, but it’s not unusual, as long as you match your spells to your enemies—and your enemies’ positions. You should match Blue Magic to the archer, because she's far away. Then match Red Magic to the knights, because they’re in close-range. Then, you should match your Green Magic automatic rifle to the giant, because his melee weapon makes him dangerous up close, and he’s always moving, so your Blue Magic precision shots aren’t your best bet.

Once you start seeing the battlefield this way, Immortals of Aveum’s fights become puzzles that you can control with your magic. Just match your spells to your situation, and you'll claim victory in no time.

Totems

Totems are a kind of magic spell tied to an object that you hold in your left hand. In the game’s earliest hours, you get a whip that you can use to lasso archers off of their perches and drop them in front of you, where it’s easier to shoot them dead from close range.

Totems are great for disturbing your enemies. They’re often great to toss out at the beginning of a battle in order to take away the high ground and slow your enemies down.

Furies

Think of Furies like a special, powerful type of magic. They’re useful for specific situations at first, like when an enemy deploys a powerful shield. The Fury Shatter is purpose-built for that situation.
They’re so powerful that you can’t use them all the time. You’ll need Mana (that bar with three segments at the lower right of your screen) to cast these spells, and you’ll need Mana Crystals (which you’ll find out in the world, or regenerate with a Talent) to refill that meter.

Augments: Blink and Shield

We shouldn’t quite leave this section without talking about the two basic ways to avoid early game damage, both of which offer protection and run on cooldowns.

Your shield offers protection for a little while until it breaks; when that happens, it has to recharge for its next use. You can upgrade your shield with Blue Magic Talents.

Your Blink ability allows you to zoom several feet away from wherever you are, which helps you speed into cover and avoid enemy attacks. You can upgrade Blink with Green Magic Talents.

Talents

Talents are Immortals of Aveum’s skills, and they allow you to specialize in each type of magic.

There are three branches in the skill tree, one each for Blue Magic, Red Magic, and Green Magic. Each of those has 27 nodes, for a total of 81 talents. For 10,000 gold, you can reset your talents and start from the beginning.

To get more Talents, you need Arcanum. To get more Arcanum, you need to kill things. It’s basically XP with a fancier name.

In the game’s first several hours, as you’re still learning about the different types of magic and spells, it’s best to spread your skill points around between the three types of magic. Below, we’ll list every skill and highlight our recommendations for the best early-game Talents.

Every Talent tree has three sections. The wide middle contains boosted stats for the core Talents. The left boosts your Strikes. The right boosts your Controls. Below, we concentrate on the middle path, which is always available. You’ll unlock the sides as you progress through the game.

Our recommendations are in bold below, and you’ll be able to purchase these Talents within an hour or two of unlocking the skill trees. They follow the jack of all trades philosophy that we wrote about above, making you a little hardier and a little more deadly when you’re just learning how to play, while not pigeonholing you into a specific early-game build. For example, even if you decide to focus almost exclusively on Blue Magic Talents later, you probably won’t regret pouring a little into the Red Magic Talent tree to gain a bit more health.
