JETT: The Far Shore Starter Guide and Tips
JETT: The Far Shore, from Superbrothers and Pine Scented Software, is a game about exploring and researching an alien planet, in the hope that it might become your home. While zooming over the surface in your ‘jett’, a highly maneuverable little craft, you’re tasked with unlocking the secrets of this unknown world. Discovering how to interact with each plant and animal, and how they work together, changes everything about the game.
There’s a lot to remember and take in, so we asked developers Superbrothers and Pine Scented Software for some tips to get you started. Here’s how best to explore The Far Shore.
Take it Slow
A good rule to follow is that you’re almost always going too fast. Though there are moments when surging with the scramjets is a good idea, ‘feathering’ the boost button (left mouse or R2) will keep you up-to-speed and in control. The brake (right mouse or L2) shouldn’t be an afterthought. It’s valuable when skimming peaks and climbing up acute slopes.
You can maneuver more easily when you turn off your scramjets. If you’re scanning a number of resources in a tight space, going super slow is better than zooming and hoping for a drive-by scan.
You can also press and hold TAB or L1 to check where you need to go, which also enables slow-motion while you’re doing so. It helps if you need to take a moment.
Pop and Glide
The jett has a small boost, called a ‘pop’ (Spacebar or X), that emits a blast from the scramjets that interacts with pools and other elements. It can also be used for ‘dash maneuvers’. Pressing left or right while you ‘pop’ will let you dash left or right, and backwards will hop you into the air, setting you up for a glide if you continue to pull backwards. It’s a great trick to extend jumps and more easily guide your craft over troublesome jumps.
Spam the Scan
It’ll take multiple scans with the resonator to identify a resource and unlock its information, so just scan everything. The more knowledge you accrue, the more tools you’ll have at your disposal. And don’t forget that every piece of knowledge is stored for you to view. Both effects and lore can be found in the menu at any time.
The information you gather is helpful to your progress. Just one example: a ‘Sauma’ has a ‘sedative effect’, meaning you can throw them at another creature to slow them down. The world is full of interactive elements, you need to scan loads to figure them all out.
Vapor Capers
The scramjets get boosted by vapor, a sparkly gas that you absorb as you fly over it. If you perform any of the dash maneuvers listed above while collecting the gas, you’ll gather more of it. You can also collect vapor from another jett by flying directly behind it.
If you’re being pursued, double tapping Shift or R1 will vent any collected vapor, hitting the chasing enemy with a blast of gas. It helps when trying to shake off certain enemies.
You can combine mists from creatures with your vapor for interesting effects. If you have a full tank of vapor and fly through the mist released from the previously mentioned ‘Sauma’ plant, your vapor will have sedative properties.
Every ‘Ghokebloom’ you find and activate (by popping) will boost the size of your vapor tank.
