You play as Josef, an adorable, dome-headed robot. When Machinarium begins, he’s been discarded and consigned to a scrapheap. After some reassembly, he sets off on a quest back to the titular city of Machinarium. Along the way, he uncovers a plot by the evil Black Cap Brotherhood, gets wrongfully imprisoned, and sets out to free the city, including his girlfriend Berta. 

Machinarium’s gameplay is an ode to the days of classic point-and-click adventure games, updated beautifully for the modern era. Every location is a world unto itself, sumptuously hand-drawn and begging to be poked and unraveled.

Solving Machinarium’s puzzles is all about attention to detail and your willingness to experiment. It’s full of brain teasers, logic puzzles, opportunities to make hats, and more than an hour of adorable animations. What it’s not full of is spoken dialogue—but only because Machinarium immerses its players in a world where comic-inspired bubbles, gestures, and movement nudge players toward victory.
