The Epic Games Store Lunar New Year Sale
By Craig Pearson
Lunar New Year marks the start of the new year on the lunar and lunisolar calendars (whose months are moon cycles). The festivities are observed across a number of East Asian countries, such as China, Vietnam, and Korea, each with their own form of celebrations. A quarter of the globe comes together to hope for health and happiness, while exchanging gifts and eating well.
We want to help with the celebrations. New year, new games. The perfect combination. If you need some inspiration for your library, here are a few picks.
This gorgeous, story-driven action adventure game, inspired by Studio Ghibli films, won multiple awards last year. As Kena, a spirit guide, you’ll uncover the secrets of a forgotten community, and help to usher their deceased into the afterlife. Her helpers, the Rots, are adorable.
Viking leader Eivor and her band of Norsemen attempt to take control of ancient England. It’s a huge game, with you growing your settlement, and grasping control of the land from the warlords that control the swamps and cities.
RPG shooter Borderlands 3 has so many guns that they stopped counting at ‘1 billion’. It’s the perfect game to spend an evening with friends in: raiding vaults and comparing what guns you have from the vast, randomly generated arsenal.
CD Projekt Red’s future-set RPG sets you down in Night City, a neon metropolis where morals are left at the city limits. Hack people, hack yourself, and roam the streets in this open-world adventure. Also, Keanu Reeves is embedded into your psyche. It’s quite a ride.
Rockstar’s vast cowboy simulator puts you in a gang of itinerant criminals as they hunt for a place to settle down. The prairie is full of work for a dishonest man, and you can earn coin in heists, hunting, robbing, and even a good deed here or there.
You’re the spark that ignites a revolution. You’re a guerilla revolutionary on the island of Yara, fighting your way through the dictator’s forces. It’s full of characters and chaotic violence as you slowly take the islands back for the people. The improvised weaponry includes a CD gun that plays the ‘Macarena’ while firing the deadly disc.
Rockstar’s open-world crime sim puts you in the criminal minds of three protagonists. Each is trying to better themselves, albeit by committing heists and other felonies. Aside from the interlocking stories, there’s a whole world of San Andreas to explore. You’re as likely to rob a city store as you are to end up stalking Bigfoot through the forests.
A globe-spanning take on the co-operative zombie shooter. Fight off thousands of undead in places like New York, Jerusalem, Moscow, Tokyo. The zombies in World War Z: Aftermath swarm properly, climbing up and over each other while trying to get at your tasty flesh.
The Lunar New Year Sale runs from Jan 27th and ends on Feb 10th.
