Hysteria in Howlsbend is an Interactive Narrative Experience driven by conversational AI Characters.

Our game is set in a colonial-era New England town driven to hysteria when a beloved member of the community is afflicted by a witch. You lead the witch hunt by having typed one-on-one conversations with a cast of characters powered by GPT-3. Can you uncover the mystery and help decide the town’s fate?

How is ChatGPT used in the game?

GPT technology is used in the development of Hysteria in Howlsbend to power conversations between players and the cast of characters. The technology generates responses based on the input provided by the player, and a tailored AI context carefully crafted by the team. This enables the characters to generate natural dialogues, and evolve over the game experience by having emotional curves.

Why is OpenAI API Key Required to Play the Game?

Hysteria in Howlsbend was created as a student research project at Carnegie Mellon University's Entertainment Technology Center, with the intention of experimenting with AI technologies in video games. The technology we are using to drive our conversational AI characters is developed by OpenAI and charges are applied based on usage. Since the game is not created for profit, and does not contain any In App Purchases, we simply cannot afford the charges given the unpredictable volume from the Epic Games Store. But we do want to share our work with a wider audience. Therefore, we decided to release the game for free and simply ask our players to use their own API Key for billing.
This game could not be played without a valid OpenAI API Key.

How does billing actually work?

Billing happens every time the player submits a question to our system. OpenAI has a standard pricing of $0.0015 / Token (~750 words). We estimate each submission to cost ~$0.015 and each playthrough to cost ~$0.5.

How do I create an API Key?

To create an OpenAI API Key, please follow these steps

Step 1: Visit the OpenAI website
Go to the OpenAI website (https://openai.com (새 탭에서 열림)) and navigate to the API section. This is where you can access the tools and information needed to create an API key.

Step 2: Sign in or create an account
If you already have an OpenAI account, sign in using your credentials. If not, you will need to create a new account by following the registration process.

Step 3: Access the API settings
Once you are signed in, locate and access the API settings in your OpenAI account dashboard. This is where you can manage and generate API keys.

Step 4: Generate a new API key
In the API settings page, find the option to generate a new API key. Click on it and follow any provided instructions or prompts to create a new key.

Step 5: Review the API key details
After generating the key, you will be presented with its details, including the actual API key string itself. Make sure to review and take note of this key as it will be needed for API authentication.

Step 6: Secure your API key
API keys provide access to sensitive resources, so it's important to keep them secure. Treat them like a password and avoid sharing them publicly or storing them in insecure locations. Please note that our game does not store player's API key
