33 Immortals is a large-scale, top-down action roguelike built around an impressive 33-player co-op scheme. As you begin your journey as a damned soul, you drop into Inferno, a large map with up to 32 other players fighting enemies, completing challenge rooms, and unlocking relics to power up their attacks and abilities.

Because the game is so focused on the combined force of so many players, it can be a challenge to figure out what you should do, where you should go, and what upgrades you should chase. This guide will cover key tips and things to do first in 33 Immortals.

Complete Torture Chambers and stick with others

The main goal of each run in Inferno is to cooperate with other players to complete Torture Chambers before unlocking the pinnacle boss. These Torture Chambers are contained rooms you can enter, and they contain tough individual foes or large waves of enemies and minibosses. Defeating all the enemies allows you to open up chests to unlock Relics (stat buffs or new passive abilities for that run), a currency called Eternal Shards that you can spend on Perks, and another important currency, Bones. You can spend Bones on healing, keys to unlock one of the bonus chests in these rooms, and teleport stones to fast travel to other players.

However, you'll want to exit the Torture Chamber as soon as you finish it, because it causes a barrage of huge explosions, projectiles, and other attacks to rain down on everyone in your instance, whether they are inside a Torture Chamber or not. Once everyone leaves, the attacks stop. But, if other players are fighting enemies, this can cause them to take a lot of damage or die from the onslaught of attacks.

Up to six players can be in a Torture Chamber, with up to 33 players on the greater map. The idea is to have several groups of players fighting in multiple Torture Chambers at the same time, rotating from one to the next as new ones open up.

The best strategy is to travel with your party or find some random players in your instance and follow them as they complete Torture Chambers and explore. You cannot succeed alone in 33 Immortals; you need to work with others.

Once enough Torture Chambers have been completed, the Ascension Battle will unlock. This is a large-scale fight within the regular map where all players have to work together to take out waves of enemies in a central location. When a player activates this, the rest of the map will be coated in a sheet of flame that prevents you from exploring or doing anything else. Therefore, you need to keep an eye on your map to see where players are congregating to do the Ascension Battle and travel there as fast as you can.

If you defeat all the enemies during this Ascension Battle, you can then ascend to take on the pinnacle boss, which is Lucifer himself.

Always keep a Teleport Stone on you

This is a super small decision you can make while playing, but an important one. At the shrines outside Torture Chambers, you can buy a Teleport Stone for 50 Bones. You can collect Bones by destroying pots, opening chests, and dismantling Relics. Always keep at least one Teleport Stone on you, because you may need to fast travel around the map.

With it, you can choose any player and instantly travel to them, whether they are outside a Torture Chamber or inside one. It allows you to help players out if they need it, or quickly jump to the Ascension Battle to avoid dying by the sheet of fire that coats the map.

Complete Feats and raise your Feat level

Almost every progression system, persistent upgrade, and buff you can unlock to help you out in runs is tied to your Feat level. These are challenges, tasks, and objectives to complete as you are fighting in Inferno. You can see your Feats and your current Feat level by talking to Beatrice in the Dark Woods before every run.

Completing Feats raises your Feat level. At key milestones, like level four and six, you will gain the ability to equip more Perks to improve your abilities and increase the chance for certain Relics to appear from chests.

This is the core progression pathway in 33 Immortals early on, and the main way you can increase your power and enhance your strength. Perks grant core bonuses to your character, while Relics offer more potent effects and abilities and drop from chests in Torture Chambers you complete. These effects include increasing your heavy attack damage, but lowering your light attack damage, or improving each player’s strength when they are standing near other players.

Feats cover almost anything under the sun. These include fighting with others, using a specific weapon, defeating certain bosses or minibosses, and simply opening chests. So long as you are completing an objective, opening up a chest, or killing enemies, you will be working towards something. However, you want to keep an eye on your Feats to ensure you are redeeming them with Beatrice and checking which new ones have unlocked. That way, you can focus on these objectives to increase your Feat level faster.

Stick with a weapon and learn it

It can be tempting to hop between the game’s different weapons, from the sword to the bow to the staff. Each weapon plays in a distinct way. For example, the sword is the only weapon that can guard and block attacks, whereas the staff is the best at dealing debuffs and attacking large groups of enemies with its spells. Each weapon has a unique mechanic that you need to learn to be able to excel in combat and survive against the tougher minibosses and pinnacle bosses.

Therefore, it's best to stick with a weapon that you like the playstyle of. For example, if you want to fight from a distance, then the bow or staff is your best option. Learn that weapon to not only get better at using it against groups of enemies, but to also level up Feats and improve your Feat level. Each weapon has its own set of Feats that you can constantly work toward.

Upgrade your Attack, Health, and Empathy consistently

During each run, you will pick up purple remnants from the corpses of enemies you damage. These fill up a meter in the corner of your screen. When full, you can then spend these resources at purple orbs scattered throughout the map. You can upgrade your attack strength, boost your health, or enhance your empathy, which improves your co-op skills.

Once this meter fills up, run to an orb and upgrade one of these stats as soon as possible. Any purple remnants you collect while the orb is filled aren’t banked and are therefore wasted, so you don’t want to be losing out on progression towards another stat upgrade just because you haven’t cashed in yet. Even if it means running away from other players to quickly make this upgrade, it is worth doing.

These upgrades are vital to ensuring you are strong enough to tackle the tougher bosses, especially when other players start to die.

Don't be afraid of starting a new run

Your chances of completing Torture Chambers, the Ascension Battle, or the pinnacle boss depend strongly how many players are in your instance. If too many players drop out or die, you will not have the damage output to be able to take on the tougher enemies and threats, and you won’t be able to complete enough Torture Chambers to reach those Ascension Battles and bosses. 33-player co-op is here for a reason; you need a lot of buddies to output enough damage and combine skills with other players.

You can still succeed with only 10-30 players, but fights will be longer. If your instance drops below 10 people, it may be worth ending your run, banking all your unlocks and starting fresh.

On top of that, when you are resurrected from the dead within a run, your maximum health is severely limited, often a third of its starting capacity. So you should play cautiously if you are in the middle of the fight, as your survivability is severely reduced. If you are just exploring, it may also be time to call the run here if you are low on health and don’t have many players in your instance.

There are a lot of later strategies and unlocks in 33 Immortals, but these are some initial tips to help you out as you get familiar with the game and its mechanics.

33 Immortals is available March 18 on Epic Games Store in early access.
