Assassin’s Creed Shadows boss guide: How to eliminate all 12 Shinbakufu Onryo targets

Our Assassin’s Creed Shadows Shinbakufu Onryo boss guide discusses all the targets that you’ll face as you advance further into the campaign. Naturally, there will be major spoilers ahead, though we’ve opted to use each target’s moniker/nickname as opposed to their real names.
Tips for hunting down the 12 Shinbakufu members
The Shinbakufu faction members are scattered all across Japan. More often than not, you must complete a series of tasks before you can ascertain their exact locations. Here are a few tips that we previously mentioned in our beginner’s guide:
- Selecting an objective lists clues, such as regions and landmarks. You can open the world map and scan the area using your scouts to reveal the marked location.
- You may also explore the area on your own. Hold down the aim button until you see a light blue glow, which denotes a target or quest objective.
- You can play as either Yasuke or Naoe, but you must use their capabilities effectively. Yasuke is a formidable fighter who can take on multiple foes simultaneously, but he has a hard time traversing areas. Naoe is swift and agile, and she can stealthily explore enemy bases. However, her attacks are fairly weak in straight-up combat.
- Most opponents reward you with weapons and engravings, and these are usually of legendary quality.
The Onryo Samurai
The Onryo Samurai is the first Shinbakufu member that you encounter in Assassin's Creed Shadows. This happens during the campaign’s introductory stage and serves as a tutorial for stealth mechanics.
Reward:
- Improved Running Assassinate (engraving)
The Wounded
Once the campaign is in full swing, you’ll be able to hunt down additional Shinbakufu members. For The Wounded, you’ll gain the assistance of warrior monks, including a potential allied companion named Yaya. Eventually, you’ll see The Wounded walking around Amagasaki Castle, where you’ll have an opportunity to swiftly assassinate him.
Rewards:
- Death Whisperer (kusarigama): +200% damage on enemy collisions
- Extra Damage After Colliding (engraving)
The Golden Teppo
When looking for The Golden Teppo, Naoe must disguise herself as an attendant for a tea ceremony. During this segment, you’ll be able to confront a woman who might be The Golden Teppo. If you choose the correct individual, she’ll reveal her true identity. If you pick the wrong person, you’ll have to chase them down and kill them.
The real Golden Teppo will still reveal herself. All that’s left is to assassinate her at her base near Osaka Castle.
Rewards:
- Shinobi’s Fury (tanto): Weak point attacks make enemies vulnerable a second time.
- Vulnerable After Weak Point Attack (engraving)
The Ox
After finishing off the above enemies, Yasuke and Naoe will end up joining forces. Now, you can search for even more Shinbakufu targets in Assassin’s Creed Shadows.
One of these individuals is The Ox, a no-nonsense combatant who can easily crush most opponents with his bulky size and massive kanabo. Before you can take him on, you must first gain the help of a wandering ronin, blow up an atakebune warship, and decide what to do with the Tsuno.
Rewards:
- Daybreak’s Fury (kanabo): Breaking armor spreads shrapnel to deal 100% damage
- Shrapnel from Breaking Armor (engraving)
The Fool
The Fool might look comical thanks to his mask, but finding him is no mean feat. The entire arc takes place in Kyoto, where you also have to bring down the Takahashi Clan as part of the Twisted Tree quest. You can spare two of the patriarch’s children, as the others will hunt you down if you kill their father.
Later on, you’ll meet The Fool himself. You’ll be aided by Gennojo—he’s a potential ally/companion, as well as a romance option for Naoe.
Rewards:
- Steel Blossom (katana): Instantly charges your posture attacks after a vault.
- Instant Posture After Vault (engraving)
The Naginata
You’ll have to trek across the region of Omi to the northeast, where you’ll meet Aoi, Shotei, and Katsuhime. Similar to Gennojo, Katsuhime is also a potential recruit and romance option for Naoe.
In any case, once you’ve cornered The Naginata in his castle, you can steal his dog’s treats to cause a commotion. Doing so leaves him open for a deadly takedown.
Rewards after killing The Naginata:
- Sage’s Reach (naginata): Stack 10% damage on the next hit with each block
- Stack Damage After Block (engraving)
- Last Breath (bow): Using special ammo instantly triggers its affliction on a headshot
- Affliction on Headshot (engraving)
The Mourner
Among all the Assassin’s Creed Shadows Shinbakufu members, none is more unique than The Mourner. While we don’t want to spoil her true identity, let’s just say that something special might happen if you pick the correct responses when playing as Yasuke.
Likewise, when you do confront The Mourner, make sure you spare her as Yasuke instead of attacking as Naoe. This ensures The Mourner’s survival, as well as future meetings with Yasuke.
Rewards:
- Myth Slayer (katana): Combo enders have the postured effect and make enemies vulnerable
- Improved Riposte (engraving)
The Noble
The quests to take out The Noble happen in the region of Harima. Starting from Himeji Castle, you’ll venture into the wilderness and visit several villages to find a lost child. Note that it’s possible to spare The Noble to get an additional dialogue response at this arc’s conclusion, though your quarry will still perish as part of the story.
Rewards:
- Oni’s Fury (amulet): Gain 15% damage for every non-legendary gear piece that you equip
- Damage for Non-Legendary Gear (engraving)
The Wise
The Wise can be found in the region of Yamato, which is where you’ll visit Nara Heartland, Koriyama, and Todai-ji Temple. Two clans—the Akiyama and Tsutsui—are at odds with each other due to tensions. However, we all know that someone else is pulling the strings.
Be forewarned that a member of the Kurai Eikyou, a different faction that’s part of another side quest, might be patrolling the area. You could end up fighting two tough opponents instead of one.
Reward:
- Winds of War (kusarigama): Posture attacks against dazed enemies break their armor
The Fox
Before you can meet The Fox, you must first complete Yasuke’s personal quest called Lords of Azuchi, which shows a previous meeting with Niwa Nagahide and Mori Ranmaru. Once you’ve completed the task, you must aid Nagahide in the region of Wakasa, which is in the northwestern corner of the map. Eventually, you’ll track down The Fox to his abode by following the sound of biwa music.
Rewards:
- Snakebite (katana): Instantly charge your posture attacks after using a tool
- Instant Posture After Using Tool (engraving)
The Two-Faced
The Two-Faced is the second to the last Shinbakufu member that you encounter in the campaign. Before you can challenge him, however, you must complete Naoe’s personal quests: Before the Fall and Wolves and Foxes. These tell you more about Naoe’s training to become a shinobi. Moreover, you learn about a broader conflict between the Templars and Assassin Brotherhood, which has finally reached the shores of Japan.
As the battle rages outside Shoryuji Castle, Naoe and Yasuke must chase down the Two-Faced, eventually cornering him at Oyamazaki Village. This leads to one of the fiercest bouts in the game. The Two-Faced has several combo chains, feint attacks, and a dirty move where he kicks sand to stun you. You also switch between Yasuke and Naoe as the fight progresses. Once the fight is over, you can decide which of the two protagonists executes the Two-Faced.
Rewards:
- Dragon’s Edge (katana): Create an area-on-effect on hit with your dodge attacks
- Larger Impact on Dodge Attack (engraving)
The Horseman
The last Shinbakufu target in Assassin’s Creed Shadows is none other than the faction’s leader, the Horseman. There are no frills or distractions here. All you need to do is head to the marked location to see what transpires.
