The battle for the Alps during the First World War saw some of the most intense high-altitude combat ever seen in human history… and you can experience it yourself with our Italian WW1 FPS Isonzo, which will be released on September 13th, 2022! Battles involve 48 players fighting for either the Kingdom of Italy or the Austro-Hungarian Empire - one side will be attacking while the other will be defending, and every map is based on a historical offensive. Our release date reveal trailer is set on a newly revealed map set in the Dolomites mountain range.

When you say WW1, people tend to think of mud and trenches, but it was a different situation on the Italian Front. There are still trenches, but they’re carved out of the rocky ground, with incredible mountain views. With Isonzo we’ve created maps based on particular battles from history - the map seen in the trailer is about the fighting of August 1915 for the Sasso di Sesto. It’s only a small mountain, but the peak is still 2,539 meters (8330 feet) above sea level. Our sources include trench maps, museums, books, geographical data, and even a few field trips.

It isn’t just the visuals of mountain warfare that we aim to capture in Isonzo, but also the challenges faced by soldiers on the ground. Players choose from classes which have their own specialities: Mountaineers represent the specialist mountain troops fielded by each side, Officers can call in artillery with their flare guns, Snipers enjoy expert marksmanship, frontline Riflemen can support their team and use rifle grenades, Assault troops lead the charge and can carry light machine guns, while the Engineer, well…

Mountaintop Construction
The construction of field defenses was a major part of the First World War, and it features in Isonzo as well! Engineers can build barbed wire and sandbag positions anywhere reasonably flat, and wise placement can make a huge difference to the course of the battle. Block off dangerous flanking routes, establish new strongpoints, and force the enemy to react to your team’s decisions.

Isonzo Firstperson ConstructionIt’s not just Engineers who can make a mark on the battlefield though - Mountaineers can build trench periscopes, while Riflemen can place down ammunition crates. The attacking team can also build defenses - ideal for fortifying newly captured territory, or perhaps to put down some cover for advancing troops. The construction system makes battles much more dynamic, and gives teams more choice about how they want to approach attacking and defending on each map.
