The long-awaited follow-up to Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night—the 2019 action role-playing game regarded as the spiritual successor to the Castlevania series—was revealed today with a splashy trailer and a promised 2026 release date.

Bloodstained: The Scarlet Engagement is in development by Shutaro (SHUTARO) Iida and Koji (IGA) Igarashi at developer ArtPlay.

Set in England during the 16th Century—and before the events of Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night—a mysterious floating castle under the control of “Demon Lord Elias” has begun terrorizing citizens with its demonic forces.

The game introduces two new protagonists: Leonard Brandon, a young fighter with the Church's Black Wolves clan, and Alexander Kyteler, a knight of the Kingdom's White Stags and lone survivor of an initial, unsuccessful expedition.

Players will simultaneously play as both Leo and Alex as they rise together to defeat Demon Lord Elias’s reign of terror and shatter the chains of a kingdom tormented by evil forces.

Bloodstained: The Scarlet Engagement will feature the largest map yet in the Bloodstained universe, filled with a fresh cast of allies and foes. Because the game is set in an early chapter of the universe, the developers say new players can jump in without any prior knowledge of the first game, though long-time fans will be able to uncover deep connections.

The game will feature dawn, day, dusk, and night, seen through shifting light and darkness as time passes. The lighting will also transform both the gameplay and the way players interact with the world.

Of course, the new playable characters bring with them new moves brought to life by the Epiphany Combat System, allowing them to uncover powerful abilities and master combat in innovative ways.

Finally, the developers said that Bloodstained: The Scarlet Engagement will include a wide range of personalization that can impact the way armor looks and offer expanded character appearance options. There are even new crafting and cooking side quests players can perform to strengthen their characters.

Bloodstained: The Scarlet Engagement is in development for PC (including the Epic Games Store), PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, with a release window set for 2026.

The good news is that you don’t have to wait that long to find out more about the game. In an exclusive interview with SHUTARO and IGA, James Mielke—former EIC of EGM and co-founder of both Tigertron and Bitsummit—chatted with the famed duo about their work on Bloodstained: The Scarlet Engagement and how the universe continues to evolve.
