In Crimson Desert, you play as Kliff, a formidable warrior among the Greymanes. Known throughout the lands of Pywel as guardians of peace, the Greymanes are nevertheless beset by threats on all sides. After tragedy strikes, Kliff must seek out his lost comrades.

You don't need to go it alone, though. Our Crimson Desert Greymane camp management guide covers everything you need to know about your base of operations in Howling Hill, including recruitable allies, dispatch missions, key resources, and unlockable functions.

How to start building your Greymane camp in Howling Hill

You start building the Greymane camp upon reaching Chapter 3: Howling Hill - Homestead. There, you’ll meet an old comrade, Marius.

Eventually, Marquis Serkis of Hernand tells you that the Greymanes have been granted a fief. Follow the soldier to the location to undertake the next objectives, which include securing a tent, carrying sacks, and planting a banner. Note that this is also when you unlock Damiane, another playable character.

You’re then asked to cook 2x Modest Clear Soup using the nearby pot. After a short celebration, you’ll bring Marius to your camp. Along the way, two recruits, Carl and Ross, will also join up.

Greymane faction quests and Marius’s recruitment drive

Now that you've set up the Greymane camp in Crimson Desert, you might want to check the Journal: Faction Quests menu. There, you’ll see three tabs for the Greymanes:

  • Scattered Embers: Most of these pertain to quests given by supporting characters, such as Naira, Yann, and Oongka. You’ll need to progress through the main story to encounter some of these characters.
  • Grounds of the Sunrise: These include camp expansion projects and rumored Greymane locations.
  • Greymane Commissions: These are tasks given to you by the Greymanes you’ve rescued.

Marius charges you with seeking out Greymanes that have been scattered to the winds. These are part of the Grounds of the Sunrise objectives. Simply go to the location and complete the task for the new recruits to appear in your camp.

Marius will provide additional quests for you as you continue to upgrade your camp’s level. Eventually, you’ll have more than 30 comrades in your settlement.

Greymane Commissions

Greymanes in your camp may task you with a few requests, such as handing over some materials or delivering a type of weapon. Be sure to complete these objectives since each one rewards you with a Medium Bag, which grants +3 inventory slots. Since there are a total of 27 Greymane Commissions in Crimson Desert, it’s possible to obtain +81 inventory slots for your loot.

Carl’s Camp Provisions and the Supply Chest

One of the first few recruits to join your camp is Carl, who handles provisions. Carl has a few functions in Crimson Desert. The first is the Supply Chest behind him. It contains loot obtained from various missions and supplies produced in your camp. Many of these supplies can be used for crafting and cooking.

The Camp Provisions function, meanwhile, lets you donate resources directly. The total resources are shown in the upper-right corner of the screen. These are subsequently used to complete dispatch missions (more on these in a while).

  • Armaments: Donate weapons, armor, and accessories.
  • Stones: Donate stones and ores.
  • Timber: Donate different kinds of timber.
  • Food: Donate cooked meals and ingredients.
  • Money: Donate your own silver.

Camp Dispatches: Greymane skills

Another ally that joins your Crimson Desert Greymane camp early on is Luke. He lets you dispatch recruits on various missions.

First, you’ll want to check the skills of your Greymane comrades. Some of these boost efficiency and yields depending on the mission type:

  • Escort
  • Farmer
  • Rancher
  • Fisherman
  • Smith
  • Logger
  • Miner

In other cases, at least one Greymane with a particular skill must be selected to carry out certain types of missions:

  • Craftsman
  • Jeweler
  • Engineer
  • Cook
  • Explorer
  • Painter
  • Weaver

Camp Dispatches: Mission types

Let’s face it: Trying to donate your own items to your camp can be taxing. Thankfully, you can amass more resources by sending Greymane recruits on dispatch missions. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Talk to Ross to see the available locations in each region. You can unlock more locations as you progress through the campaign and explore more of the world map.
  • A minimum number of recruits is required to undertake certain missions. Also, as mentioned earlier, some missions require at least one character with a particular skill—for instance, Construction missions require the Builder skill.
  • Missions take several hours in-game before they can be completed. You can pass the time by sleeping on a bed in your tent.
  • Some types of missions automatically restart once finished, which means you won’t need to reselect characters.
  • You can cancel an ongoing mission and you’ll be refunded the resource cost.

Here are the types of missions that you can expect:

  • Escort: Rewards money. Costs food.
  • Harvesting and Farming: Rewards food and trade goods depending on the location. Costs money.
  • Mining: Rewards stone. Costs money and food.
  • Logging: Rewards timber. Costs money and food.
  • Recapture Stronghold: Lowers the number of enemies in a base or fortress. Costs armaments, food, and money.
  • Production: Creates certain items; requires a Greymane with the Engineer skill. Costs armaments, food, and money.
  • Crafting: Creates items or trade goods; requires skills like Painter, Weaver, Jeweler, or Craftsman. Costs different amounts of resources.

Upgrading Howling Hill and Pailune

Reconstruction missions are some of the most important in the game. These allow you to fully upgrade your Howling Hill camp in Crimson Desert.

The first Howling Hill Camp Expansion upgrade occurs during Chapter 3: Pioneering - Bustling Hill. It requires 2x recruits, 100x food, and 250x money. After 18 hours in-game, your camp should reach the next level. This leads to additional tasks from Marius where you’ll be able to recruit even more survivors.

Subsequent upgrades can be undertaken once you have enough recruits and resources. For example, the Fourth Expansion upgrade requires 10x recruits and a ton of materials, including 1,500x armaments, 2,500x stone, 2,500x timber, 4,000x food, and 100,000x money.

Upon finishing Chapter 7: Homecoming, you’ll be able to liberate the town of Pailune in the north. This is the home region of the Greymanes, which is why they want to have a hand in its reconstruction. From there, you’ll be able to send your recruits to build the Pailune Council, Pailune Institute, and more.

Additional tips for growing your Greymane camp

Here are some additional tips to keep in mind while you’re rebuilding Greymane camp in Crimson Desert:

  • If you field more than the minimum number of required characters for a mission, you’ll receive extra rewards.
  • Early on, try to run at least one Escort mission for money and either a Harvest or Ranching mission for food. Oakenshield Manor and Capra Pasture in the Hernand region are good examples.
  • Later once you’ve found more surviving Greymanes, you can run multiple missions of the same category. For example, Thornbriar Food Storage, Sungrove Manor, and Azerian Manor in Demeniss offer great ways to make money.
  • Warspike Spearmaker in Hernand rewards a few hundred armaments for your resource pool. Later after Chapter 10, you can pick Gorthak Ironworks in Delesyia to earn thousands of armaments.
  • Various settlements unlock new functions and tools for Kliff:
    • Timberturner Wainwright lets you build trade wagons that can be used to bring packaged goods to trading posts.
    • Emberwind Workshop allows you to create Cloudcarts—hot air balloons that you can ride
    • Klinden Workshop is where you can make Kuku Pots that store key items like puzzle pieces and machinery parts.
  • Upon upgrading your camp further, you’ll unlock a farm and a ranch.
    • You can plant seedlings in the farm and harvest the fruits of your labor.
    • The ranch lets you care for livestock, such as chickens, cows, and goats.
  • Naira’s side quests teach you about getting pets and unlocking color dyes. Yann’s side quests let you learn more about Royal Trading.
  • Certain late-game locations become available over time, leading to additional expeditions. Keep exploring Pywel to discover more settlements and points-of-interest.

That does it for our Crimson Desert Greymane camp management guide. We hope these tips help you recruit more survivors and rebuild your forces.
