Dead Island 2 drops you into the zombie-infested hellscape of Los Angeles on Feb. 3, developer Dambuster Studio and publisher Deep Silver announced during gamescom.

The game will feature the trademark brutal melee sandbox found in the Dead Island series, along with the franchise’s dark humor and a co-op mode that supports up to three players.

New details for the game were released alongside a gameplay trailer showing footage of Dead Island 2 in action.

Unlike the original 2011 Dead Island, which took place on the fictional tropical resort island of Banoi, Dead Island 2 takes place across Los Angeles, where a deadly virus is spreading, turning a cornucopia of Los Angelenos into the undead.

Players can choose between six characters, each with unique personalities and dialog. A new CGI trailer starts one of the playable slayers, Jacob, as he awakes in a Beverly Hills villa and then ventures out into the middle of the bloody outbreak and a quarantined city.

All of the playable characters in the game are immune to the bites of the infected, allowing them to harness the tainted powers running through their veins.

Dambuster Studio says the game will take place across the most iconic locations of LA, including Beverly Hills and Venice Beach.

As with the original title and its follow-ups, combat promises to be a visceral and gory first-person experience, with tons of weapons to help you cut a path through the zombies. The developers say Dead Island 2 features the most advanced dismemberment system in games, and the undead you’ll be dismembering come in dozens of distinct variants.

To help players deal with the hordes, Dead Island 2 also features the ability to customize your slayers with a new-to-the-franchise skill system that can be re-specced on the fly.

The studio added that the game will also include a number of quests, a rich cast of characters, and a thrilling pulp story.

The original Dead Island thrilled gamers with a gripping teaser trailer that many considered at the time to be the best trailer ever made for a game. The game’s success led to the release of two sequels–Dead Island: Riptide and Escape Dead Island–and the rerelease of Dead Island as a definitive edition in 2016. It also led to a one-issue comic, a novel, and early rumblings of a film.

Dead Island 2 will come in three versions when it hits the Epic Games Store, Google Stadia, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S in February, and offers an expansion pass. The Deluxe Edition will include a golden mace and golden pistol, as well as two character packs, each with a unique costume and weapon. The Gold Edition includes everything that comes with the Deluxe version, plus Eye Opener and Homewrecker weapons, and the contents of the expansion pass. Pre-purchasing any version of the game grants you a Banoi War Club, Banoi Baseball Bat, Weapons Perk and Skills Card.
