Brew up some coffee and grab your trusty flashlight, because there's a new dark disturbance in Cauldron Lake for you to explore. That's right: The second and final expansion for Alan Wake 2, The Lake House, finally arrives on October 22, and you can expect it to deliver a firm helping of survival horror goodness as well as Remedy's usual mind-melting shenanigans.

Keen-eyed Alan Wake 2 players may have already noticed warning signs for the Federal Bureau of Control (FBC) erected all around Cauldron Lake, plus a chain link fence that blocked you from exploring a certain area. The Remedy Connected Universe has already revealed a number of mysterious tendrils connecting the Alan Wake series to Remedy's other hit game Control, and this latest expansion further develops those threads.

The Lake House allows you to explore the FBC facility in Bright Falls for the first time. Taking place parallel to the main game, you'll delve into this all-new location as FBC Agent Kiran Estevez, who you briefly met during Alan Wake 2. Estevez enters the FBC facility to uncover just what exactly happened in the first place. (Hint: It's probably a bit grisly down there.)

Though Alan Wake 2 players have seen their fair share of hints as to what the FBC was doing in Cauldron Lake, this expansion gives Remedy the opportunity to show things from the Bureau's perspective for a change. The developer describes The Lake House as a return to Alan Wake's survival horror roots, with haunting new tracks from Remedy musical collaborators Petri Alanko and Poe.

The Lake House expansion is the perfect opportunity to analyze the strange phenomena of Cauldron Lake through the lens of the Federal Bureau of Control," said Lead Writer Clay Murphy. "Their attempts to explain and quantify the unknown allows us to explore the Dark Place and its relationship with art from a fresh perspective, with all the tragedy and horror that comes from trying to control the uncontrollable."

"The Lake House continues to build upon our cast of characters and explore new corners of the Remedy Connected Universe," Murphy continued. "Blending the stories and tones of our Alan Wake and Control franchises is always an exciting challenge and we hope players will enjoy the result.”

The new expansion features a tense, claustrophobic underground facility with many levels to explore and enemies to run from, and it's certainly not for the faint of heart. There's a new foe that's particularly difficult to deal with, and while we can't reveal much about them, let's just say they'll treat your corpse as their canvas if you aren't too careful. Luckily, you'll get a powerful new weapon to play with—but still, taking them down won't be easy.

“After the craziness of making Night Springs—which was quite a tonal shift and departure from the original Alan Wake 2 experience—for The Lake House expansion we really wanted to embrace the survival horror atmosphere, tone, and gameplay that Alan Wake is known for," said Game Director Kyle Rowley. "With that in mind, one of our first goals was to try and scare the players again!"

"We also wanted to explore what the world of Control would look like through the lens of Alan Wake 2," Rowley continued. "Finally, much like the Night Springs expansion, this mission is going to be accessible to players during the game’s main story, so it was important to us that we added some gameplay variety—a new weapon, a new enemy, and a new boss fight!"

"There may be some cool Control-related surprises in the expansion as well, who knows…"

You'll be able to play The Lake House if you own the Deluxe Edition of Alan Wake 2, or you can pick up the Alan Wake 2 Deluxe upgrade to gain access to the expansion pass, which grants access to both this expansion and the previous expansion, Night Springs. Deluxe Edition owners will also get another new outfit for Alan in the form of his signature look from the first Alan Wake, so you can force the writer into his original threads at any time if you so choose.

If you missed the first Alan Wake 2 expansion, Night Springs, it filled an absence that many hardcore fans noted in the base game: the lack of the titular television show, which is a loving spoof of The Twilight Zone. That expansion delivered three standalone stories that feature the bizarre, off-kilter, and fourth-wall-breaking pyrotechnics that Remedy fans expect from the Dark Place.

Those looking to catch up on the Remedy Connected Universe can check out Night Springs—as well as the aforementioned action game Control, which focuses on the FBC's attempt to find a new Director. Inspired in part by the SCP Foundation online wiki project, Control features numerous Easter eggs and references to Alan Wake—a connection made even more overt in Control's second expansion, AWE, which sees the FBC's new director Jesse Faden explore a piece of Bright Falls, the setting for the original Alan Wake.

The Lake House releases on the Epic Games Store on October 22, 2024. Pick up the Alan Wake 2 Deluxe Edition today, and prepare to face your fears in another broken-down research facility with a story to tell.
