Double Fine’s Costume Quest is a bag of tricks, treats, and Halloween vibes

The game begins with a mom making a wish for her two kids just before they leave the house on Halloween. She hopes that they'll make some friends and come back safely with candy and fun memories—and back in time for curfew, of course. That's what fraternal twins Reynold and Wren set out to do, before monsters appear and kidnap whichever sibling you’re not playing as.
Candy is currency in Costume Quest, so you’re going to need a lot of it to trade for the right information to locate the secret hideout of these horrible monsters. It’s still Halloween night, but the candy is there for every step of your quest to save your brother or sister. You can pick up candy from destroyed objects such as boxes and crates, but you also get it from defeating your enemies.
You'll spend a lot of your time in Costume Quest roller-skating through dimly lit streets and bobbing for apples, but it also features a less-common Halloween activity: epic turn-based battles. They begin with every combat participant becoming a gigantic yet realistic version of their costumes; this means that giant kaiju-style robots and medieval knights battle against goblins, ghouls, and warlocks. It's more fun than a bag of tasty candy.

Though these battles are exciting by themselves, it’s the exaggerated Halloween aesthetic that makes them so fun. Encounters are more performative than difficult, requiring quick-time events and timed button presses for you to deal maximum damage to targets. This system allows things to feel balanced and not overly difficult, and it also keeps the action moving. You feel like the heroes embodied in your costume as long as you pay attention and stay on target. You can lose a battle, but you probably just need to try a different strategy, or grind for more candy. This lighthearted tone makes Costume Quest approachable and fun instead of frustrating.
New areas and pathways become available to you as you meet new people and acquire powerful items. This adds a sense of progression while also encouraging you to engage even more with the game's decadently decorated environments.
Costume Quest is the perfect Halloween treat, and it has all the flavors and variety to make your holiday special. Its seasonal aesthetic and charming RPG systems make it the perfect October 31st-themed title for any age.
