Endling – Extinction is Forever!

I adapted the old saying of the Creed people to fit Endling because I think it fits the game very well. Games are now more than just simple “time-wasters” – they can transport a message to millions of people and thus – maybe – change something.Earth Overshoot Day – the day that marks the date when humanity has used all the biological resources that the planet regenerates every year – happens sooner and sooner.
According to recent surveys more and more scientists believe that the Earth is currently in the early stages of human-caused mass extinction. One biologist even estimated that if current rates of human destruction of the biosphere continue, one-half of all plant and animal species of life on earth will be extinct in 100 years.
Today, more than 28,000 animal species on our planet are threatened with extinction. Thousands of species - rhinos, lions, tigers, seals, and bears - are jeopardized by pollution, illegal poaching, wars, and the ever-increasing loss of their natural habitats.“Endling – Extinction is Forever” takes place in a possible near future. Mankind has altered the biosphere to a degree that makes it harder and harder to sustain animal and plant life. Even humans struggle to breathe. In this horrendous quasi-apocalyptic scenario, you – as the player – take control of the last mother fox in this dying world. You are now fighting for survival, not only your own but the survival of your clumsy cubs that depend on her mother bringing food.
This beautiful 3D- side-scrolling survival adventure let me explore and discover the destructive nature of the human race. I experienced a world ravaged by us humans through the eyes of an animal. A race that corrupts, pollutes, and exploits the most precious resource we have – our planet. I fed the cubs, watched them grow up and noticed their unique personalities and fears, and – most importantly – helped them survive.Did I like the game? No.
Endling is no “fun” game. Its gut-wrenching reality makes it close to unbearable at times. And not only when you begin to hate your own species, but also when your heart is overflowing with empathy and love for those innocent creatures. Cuteness overload, literally. And you won't let anything bad happen to them. I must protect them at all costs – and then something or someone wakes up one of your little ones…
