Your owl has arrived, and you’ve finally been invited to attend Hogwarts! With the start of the year fast approaching for the players of Hogwarts Legacy, and without Hagrid to barge in and grab you, we’ve gathered everything we think you need to know about your upcoming time in those hallowed halls

Hogwarts Legacy is one of the most anticipated games in years and will allow players to finally live life as a student at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. In it, you’ll learn how to be a powerful wizard while uncovering a hidden truth that sits at the heart of the wizarding world.

What is Hogwarts Legacy?

Hogwarts Legacy is an open-world action RPG set in the Harry Potter universe. You’ll play a new Hogwarts student, arriving as a fifth year student. The character holds the key to an ancient secret that could destroy the wizarding world, who has access to a forgotten magic that no one understands. With the help of the Wizard’s Field Guide, players will fast-track their learning, explore Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, make friends and foes, and become the witch or wizard they’ve always wanted to be.

Hogwarts Legacy Release Date

You can pre-purchase Hogwarts Legacy right now on the Epic Games Store, and it will be fully released on Feb. 10, 2023. However, pre-purchases of the Deluxe Edition will unlock 72 hours before, on Feb 7. Everyone likes to get to school early, right?

Who do you play in Hogwarts Legacy?

You’ll play a new student to Hogwarts, but one who is entering the fifth year of the school’s curriculum. We don't quite know why you’re arriving so late, but we do know that you can name and design your character and that you can select which house you will join when prompted by the Sorting Hat. The choices of Gryffindor, Slytherin, Ravenclaw, or Hufflepuff are yours to make.

Where can you go in Hogwarts Legacy?

You’ll be attending Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, but you won’t be meeting Hermione, Ron, or Harry Potter in the corridors and classes. The game is set in the late 1800s, one hundred years before the Harry Potter books and films. This means players will meet brand new professors and students in their time at school.

Hogwarts and the surrounding areas have been lovingly recreated. You’ll visit the iconic Great Hall, where all the meals are taken. As mentioned, you’ll get to visit the common rooms of all the famous houses, and each common room has different NPCs for you to befriend or fall afoul of. You’ll attend classes as a student, and we know there will be Potions, Charms, Herbology, and Defence Against the Dark Arts classrooms. And each room has a teacher to talk to and learn from.

The Room of Requirement is also in the game and acts as a hub for the player. You’ll gain spells during gameplay that’ll allow you to make this your own space within Hogwarts, adding stations that let you create potions and weave equipment or comfortable furniture to make it cozy.

Though the Quidditch Field exists, you can’t take part in the game, but you will be able to fly around the world on a broom.

On the castle grounds, there’s the Gamekeeper's Hut and the Forbidden Forest, and nearby there’s Hogsmeade Village, with its inns and shops. And you can go further afield to the unexplored highlands around Hogwarts, visiting wizarding hamlets and other locations.

What sort of magic is in Hogwarts Legacy

Spells are a witch or wizard’s stock-in-trade, and as a student, you’ll be learning to cast them. The player will learn to cast offensive and defensive spells, including the option to learn three Unforgivable Curses that plague the Wizarding World. A player can cast over 20 spells, including Stupefy to stun opponents, Petrificus Totalus to petrify them, or Incendio to blast flames. And there’s even Avada Kedavra, which can instantly kill an opponent in a battle. The player also has access to a forgotten magic that no one understands but will become clearer as the game progresses.

Spells are just one part of the overall magic system. Talents will help your character grow stronger, allowing you to permanently upgrade a particular area of your character and even alter the effects of spells.

Potions also play a part in your overall abilities. Not a lot has been said about them, but there are potions for invisibility, increased defense, and health. We imagine you’ll be glugging health potions regularly, as Hogwarts Legacy has some dangerous areas to explore.

What will you do in Hogwarts Legacy?

All we know about the main story so far is that there’s an ancient secret that threatens the wizarding world. But this is an open-world RPG about a school, so you’ll attend classes, learn things, meet students and staff, and Hogwarts and the surrounding areas are packed with things to do.

Many classmates in Hogwarts Legacy will offer additional stories and side quests, some with more dire consequences than others. We’ve been introduced to Sebastian Sallow, a Slytherin student who has embraced the Dark Arts, including the Unforgivable Curses, in an effort to save his sister. He has a questline that takes you deep into some dark places and some unique puzzles and battles that you’ll take part in. How much you engage in the Dark Arts is up to you, but you’ll see how devastating it is in his quest.

There are secrets to find in Hogwarts, including pages of the Field Guide, the special book that you use to catch up on all the studying you missed out on. The pages grow your knowledge of the world and will unlock XP.

There are quests outside the castle, too. And not just in familiar locations like Hogsmeade. Hopping on your broom will let you see all the hamlets and ruins that dot the map, and they’re places you can visit that contain puzzles and lore and will let you upgrade your character’s inventory or add to your knowledge of the forgotten magic you possess.

Who will you fight in Hogwarts Legacy?

What’s the point in learning a banishing charm if you have no one to use it on?

Ranrok looks to be the main villain of the game so far. He’s the leader of the goblin rebellion and believes wizardkind unfairly discriminates against goblins. He’s hunting the same forgotten Ancient Magic that the player’s character is believed to be wielding and can cast goblin magic as well. He’s allied with Victor Rookwood, a dark wizard who will also be a threat to the player.

Aside from those two, there are numerous enemies to battle. In addition to Dark Wizards and goblins, players will encounter poachers, trolls, and even a variety of beasts in and around the castle. Learning to battle these enemies is so important that students can even fight each other in dueling classes.

What Hogwarts Legacy editions can I pre-purchase?

We have two editions available to pre-purchase. If you pre-purchase the Standard Edition, you will get the Onyx Hippogriff Mount and can play the game from the release date of Feb 10.

If you pre-purchase the Deluxe Edition, you’ll receive the Dark Art Set, including the Thestral Mount, the Dark Arts Cosmetic Set, and the Dark Arts Battle Arena. You’ll also receive the Onyx Hippogriff Mount, and you can play the game 72 Hours earlier, starting February 7,
