Redfall is another genre-blending title from Arkane, the creators of the award-winning Dishonored, Prey, and DEATHLOOP. The new game adds another dimension to the studio’s award-winning first-person immersive sims: co-op multiplayer. 

Set in the town of Redfall, Massachusetts, where powerful vampires have blocked out the sun and cut the island off from the outside world, the player and up to three other survivors must take on the vampires and their followers, unveiling the secrets of the undead’s assault on the town, hunting the leaders, and delve into the darkness of Redfall. 
 

Redfall Release Date

Game Overview

We were recently allowed to play the game, and Arkane’s excellence in crafting a compelling FPS left us hungry for more. We learned during our time with the game that Redfall’s vampires are the result of a biotech company called “Aevum Laboratories” experiments in human longevity. They can turn their clients into vampires. It updates the vampire mythos while exploring human greed. Read the preview here. 

The world of Redfall is filled with enemies. There are cultists--humans who worship the vampires--vampires, and Vampire Gods, the boss-level vampires that control the town. 



Redfall can be played solo or with up to three other players. The game has an open world for players to explore, with the players taking back control of the world neighborhood by neighborhood, either following the story or by simply enjoying exploring the large and detailed map and finding things to do. In the mission we played, we stopped off en route to the big bad vamp to liberate a safe house along the way. 
 

Gameplay

Players have a choice of four diverse characters, each with special abilities that help to balance out the control the vampires and their followers have over the town. During multiplayer, players can even choose the same character.

Devinder Crousley is an influencer, cryptozoologist, and inventor who builds his own arsenal of vampire-slaying devices. He was in Redfall for a book tour when the town was plunged into darkness. He arms himself with some of his own creations, like the Arc Javelin that electrifies anything in a range, Ultraviolet lights that can stun enemies. He can also use a Translocator to teleport to a specific location. He can also throw a Translocator to teleport to a specific location.

Layla Ellison is a biomedical engineering student who was accidentally given telekinetic powers during a science experiment, such as Lift, that conjures an elevator to lift players several stories high. She can also cast an umbrella to protect those behind it, or summon Jason, her ex-boyfriend vampire, to fight alongside her. 

Remi De La Rosa is a combat engineer, a handy person to have in the battle against the undead. Her tech-focused arsenal includes Bribon, a small robot that fights beside her but can also be used as a decoy and cover. She can throw C4, and rally everyone around her to restore health or raise them if downed. 

Jacob Boyer is a former military sniper with a vampiric eye, making him even more deadly. He has a ghostly raven that he can use to scout and mark enemies, and a powerful sniper rifle that he can cast. 


Their powers will allow for interesting combinations. Layla can boost herself and other players over obstacles and into better positions. Remi can distract the undead and their allies, allowing for the team to sneak past from a different location. 

Players will have access to safe houses that allows them to gather missions, change their weapon load-outs, grab ammo, and more. Each character has a skill tree that allows players to upgrade their powers. Along with their powers, there are basic weapons that are best used to fight the human minions. The vampires can only be killed with specific weapons, like stake guns (or a stake bayonet attached to a normal weapon) or burned with flares.  

The objective is to rid the town of the controlling powers. These are gods to the cultists and other vampires on the island. We currently know of four: Hollow Man, Bloody Tom, Miss Whisper, and Black Sun. These are wealthy, powerful people now corrupted into their current states. With their supernatural abilities, they blocked out the sun, sculpted the oceans around Redfall into an inescapable wall, and are trying to cement their power across the town.

The players must track them down, battle their minions, and prepare for lengthy boss battles against the big bads of Redfall. 

Redfall’s Open World Explained

Redfall is cut off from the mainland, allowing Arkane to create a dense world that traps the players. Though we don’t know the exact size of the game world, there have been hints. Arkane has said the game world is the biggest it’s ever created. 



For example, during Quakecon 2022, it was revealed that all of Prey’s Talos-1 Station could fit in a single farm in one of Redfall’s districts. According to Arkane Austin’s studio director, Harvey Smith, “Jim McGill took Talos at scale and dropped it in the middle of the farm. And the district just eats the whole space station, of course. It’s gigantic.” The Talos Station is the size of “five football fields.” That farm area is a place where just one mission takes place. 

The open world is built to be played on foot, allowing players to sneak or run across the world but letting them set the pace of their exploration and reclamation of the town. With all the movement tricks the players have, and all the details of a traditional Arkane game, there will be a number of ways to explore and liberate the town of Redfall. 

Redfall Crossplay Confirmed

Being a multiplayer title doesn’t always guarantee you can play with all your friends, but Redfall has Crossplay confirmed. Crossplay compatibility means players on Xbox, PC Game Pass, Steam, or the Epic Game Store can all stake vampires together.

From fleeing the Rook, a mini-boss that the Vampire Gods release to hunt you down should you kill too many of their thralls, to the twisted nests that change each time you step inside, it shows how the world is full of surprises, loot, and opportunities for fun team play.
