How come we have all those monsters anyway? Well, some people weren’t as lucky as you, and they didn’t manage to pause the infection during its early stages. When it was still coughing and fever, that was the time to act. But as the next stages of the infection followed, causing symptoms such as skin degradation, delirium and, eventually, inability to speak, those people reached a point of no return. There might’ve been no UV light around, not to mention Antizin, or they weren’t able to reach it in time, and the progressing infection turned them into bloodthirsty creatures—Virals.
Dying Light 2 Stay Human InfectedWhat happened from there, was due to either their exposition to the sun or to chemicals. If they hid and remained sheltered from the UV rays, they became the top predators we know as Volatiles. But if they remained unlucky and stayed in the daylight—which harms and weakens the Infected—they gradually degraded into slow, shambling Biters. But there are also other types of monsters. And that’s because of the chemicals, another part of the equation. They were dropped onto The City to cure the infection, but instead, they sped up its progression and caused various mutations. The Revenant, the Demolisher, the Howler, or the Banshee are just some of the examples.

The Revenant gained wing-like mutations coming from his back which emit some kind of gas that buffs and summons nearby monsters. The Demolisher’s body grew tough and large, making him both extremely sturdy and strong. He’s not very deft, though. On the other hand, the Banshee has the speed and agility that allow her to strike you from the roofs with her long, deformed fingers and jump across Biters’ heads to either escape or reach you. And there’s the Howler’s, whose vocal cords were attacked by the virus, leaving him unable to make sounds. But if he spots you, he’ll overcome his pain and scream to call other monsters,  even though he doesn’t fight himself. So it’s good not to alert him.

Dying Light 2 Stay Human ZombiesAll right, but how not to turn into an Infected? First, you’ll really want to avoid two things: walking into the chemicals and exploring dark zones by day. The first part should be pretty obvious by now. And about the dark zones… if certain death’s what you want, then sure, go ahead into a dark building swarming with the Infected. But if you’d rather live a little longer, then maybe wait for the night, when the monsters leave. Once you’re inside, be quiet and select your route carefully. If you do that, you may avoid a lot of bloodshed. If not, run straight to the exit. Chances are, there’s a Volatile lurking somewhere, waiting for you to take one wrong step. And believe us, you don’t want to face him alone.

Let’s say nothing went wrong and you got to explore a dark zone in peace. There are certain things worth looking for there. Like inhibitors—special syringes filled with substance that’ll boost your abilities. Be careful, though. As nice as it may sound, we’re not sure there aren’t any side effects to them. You know what they say, better safe than sorry. Some sources say they might somehow affect the progression of the infection, and that’s a dangerous game to play. But there’s something even more risky—roaming around without a biomarker. It looks like a bracelet, but in fact it’s so much more than that. It’s attached to your wrist by a needle, and it can tell you when you’re going to turn. Buys you a lot of peace of mind, and probably a few more years. Or months. You never know in The City.

Dying Light 2 Stay Human FightFinally, we got to one of the most important rules of The City—always look for the light, as that’s one of your strongest weapons while fighting monsters. They will cower from it, giving you some time to run and it will be your lifeline to staying human. We’ll make sure to drop you some more tips about parkour and combat in the future posts, so stay tuned.

For now, use what you already know and try to retain your humanity. Sometimes, though, things just go wrong. Like with the poor souls who did turn. If you want to discover what might happen to you, go to dyinglightgame.com/whichmonster and check out our test. Remember, there’s still time to fight!
