The Callisto Protocol drops players deep into the depths of Black Iron Prison, a maximum-security penal colony on Jupiter’s dead moon Callisto. Things quickly go from bad to worse when a terrifying outbreak throws the moon into chaos, and the prison population begins to transform into deadly creatures called Biophage.  

Your mission?  Survive the horrors of Black Iron Prison and uncover the truth about the mysterious United Jupiter Company.  But you’ll need to use all the tools at your disposal if you want to get out alive.  Here are five tips to give you a fighting chance:

The Best Offense is a Good Defense

The Callisto Protocol blends equal parts brutal melee combat and ranged shooting. To survive the horrific onslaught on Biophage, players must master the game’s blocking and dodging mechanics.  To dodge enemy attacks, just hold left or right on the left stick before an enemy hits you. To dodge again, hold the stick in the opposite direction. Don’t worry about precision timing, just hold left or right before the attack and you’ll evade the incoming attack. You can also push down on the stick to block incoming attacks.  

Control the Pace of Combat

Taking on a single monster is one thing, but when you’re squaring off against multiple Biophage, it’s critical to control the pace of the combat.  Use the GRP gravity weapon to grab an enemy, throw it across the room, and shoot off its legs if need time to reload or use a health injector.  If you’re low on ammo, you can also grab enemies with the GRP to bring them closer for a quick melee blow with the stun baton. Think strategically about each encounter about ways to use the resources you have in the moment.

Use the Environment to Your Advantage

Black Iron Prison is a dangerous place with opportunities for environmental kills around every corner.  See spiked walls or a massive piece of machinery with griding gears?  How about a treacherous ledge with a 100 foot drop … you know what to do!  Use the GRP to throw enemies into these hazards for a quick, satisfying instant kill. 

Shoot the Tentacles

Tentacles may suddenly burst from the chest of an attacking enemy as the contagion ravages their body. If you see this happen, you’re going to want to shoot the exposed tentacles as quickly as possible before they mutate the creatures into a bigger, faster, stronger enemy right before your eyes. These mutated variants are incredibly deadly, so whatever your gameplan is in an encounter, you’ll definitely want to target these first and shoot the tentacles for a quick kill.

Wander Off the Beaten Path

Hidden throughout the game are a series of alternative paths that lead players to less explored sections of Black Iron Prison.  Players that take the time to explore will be rewarded with additional supplies, credits, and other surprises to help them survive.

The Callisto Protocol blends atmosphere, tension, and brutality to deliver an unforgettable sci-fi horror experience.  You’re going to die.  Potentially a lot.  But hopefully these tips will help give you a fighting chance to survive the horrors of Callisto.
