It’s Daria Ilyina, Community Developer at Paradox Interactive here to welcome the Epic Game Store gamers to Prison Architect! With the launch of Prison Architect, and all of its expansions, on the Epic Game’s Store, we thought future Wardens would like some help getting the lay of the land (well, concrete).
- Plan ahead. Although it may seem fun to whimsically build your prison wherever the chain link takes you, the best way to build a successful prison is through having a vision. From the beginning, start thinking of what you want to achieve and how to get there - it will help a lot in shaping your pinnacle penitentiary.

- Don’t be afraid to experiment. Plans are important, but there is no single correct way to build a good prison. Try moving your delivery area next to your kitchen, or move it near the storage. The only way to figure out what works best is to try it.There is no set way to do things - you can really be creative and shape your own prison!
- It’s okay to play with unlimited money. The unlimited money option does not lessen the experience. If anything, it allows you to fully explore your creativity without being hindered by money. However, if that’s not for you, Grants are a great way to get a direction for your prison and some extra cash.
- Don’t take in prisoners before you are ready to accept them. The worst thing that can happen to any Warden is receiving prisoners before you’ve even managed to finish fencing in the Yard. When you are first getting started, close prisoner intake and make sure everything is in place. Once your cells are ready, and the barbed wire is in place, you’re ready to open up and begin laying down the law.

- Avoid choke points. No one likes squeezing through crowded, narrow hallways - but especially not aggressive convicts. Want to keep the peace? Don’t make prisoners squeeze through a tiny corridor! Make sure you have wide open corridors or, for security checkpoints, have multiple stations to keep people moving.

- You cannot have more than one power generator per circuit. Every new Warden will try this, and every one will fail. As much as you might need more electricity to power your classrooms, try adding capacitors, or add a whole new circuit altogether (with a new generator).
- Keep your inmates happy. If you constantly have Riots, murders, and escapes, it means prisoners are unhappy! The Psychologist can help you figure out what you need to focus on to improve the situation. The psychologist is unlockable in the Bureaucracy menu. How does one unlock the Bureaucracy menu?

- Hire a Warden. Hiring a Warden unlocks the Bureaucracy menu, and all its related research options. Along with Psychology, players can unlock Finance, Security, Maintenance, and more!

- Make Quick Build your right hand man. Quick build is a good tool to quickly create multiple rooms without having to manually set them individually. Save yourself time and grief by keeping the Quick build tool on hand.
- Phone a friend (or several thousand). Need help with issues we haven’t addressed in this post? Join the Prison Architect forums to ask other players. The Prison Architect community features many awesome Wardens that will be happy to help you understand the game and how to tackle any issues (or inmates)!
There you go Warden - looks like that’s all for basic training! There’s still a lot to learn though, so keep on your toes!
We’re also giving Prison Architect away for free for all Epic Game Store users! All you need to do is claim your copy by Dec 16th and it’s yours to keep!
