It’s impressive just how perfectly suited the mid-80s movie’s set-up is for a modern multiplayer game. The Ghostbusters will gather at the Firehouse and Ray’s Occult Books, under the tutelage of two of the original owners, Winston Zeddemore and Ray Stantz, who have hung up their Proton Packs to allow a new generation to take on the spooks, specters, and ghosts. The Firehouse is a perfect hub to build a new ‘buster.
The Firehouse is more than a cool movie set; it’s where the Ghostbusters will learn on the job. There, you will customize your character and equipment before testing out the tweaks during target practice in a neighboring alleyway, hoping to control the wild energy of the Proton Packs. It’s also where you receive the missions that send you out to trap the ghosts haunting the prisons, hotels, and museums of New York. The team of Ghostbusters can be friends, random matchmaking, and/or AI bots online or offline in solo mode.
Working together, a team of four Ghostbusters will track the loose spook using the iconic P.K.E. Meter (which has another mode that stuns the ghouls). This involves hunting and shutting down the spawn points and portals that let the ghosts move about the level before confronting the spooks themselves. All the cool gadgets will come out as the ghost dodges Proton Pack blasts and tries to keep itself from being yanked into a Ghost Trap.
In a cool twist, that ghost might be another player. In game, Ray offers the Ghostbusters the chance to understand how the ghosts work by letting you play as one. Ghosts roam the levels trying to scare civilians. They can possess objects to cause mass hysteria, slip through rifts to make quick escapes, and slime the Ghostbusters because that’s what ghosts do.
“The reaction from fans of Ghostbusters has blown us away,” said Charles Brungardt, CEO of developers IllFonic. “Putting a date on and opening up preorders for Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed feels like an out-of-body experience, and we cannot wait for everyone to feel the same sensation on Tuesday, Oct. 18.”
