John Carpenter's Toxic Commando guide: How to survive as a solo player

You won't be completely alone if you're playing John Carpenter's Toxic Commando solo, at least. Your squad will be filled with AI companions that are surprisingly competent, but they still need a little bit of help from a human leader. With your leadership, you can lead an AI squad to victory on even the hardest difficulties.
The odds can feel insurmountable as a solo player at first, but things will even out as you climb the initial learning curve. Our guide will help you make the most of solo play and survive longer in John Carpenter's Toxic Commando.
Spare Parts
Spare Parts are the key to survival in John Carpenter's Toxic Commando. They're used for everything, from fixing up gates to reach objectives to building traps and turrets to defend points of interest.
The problem is that you can only carry one set of Spare Parts at a time. To get around this limitation, you can order your squad mates to use their Spare Parts whenever necessary. Just ping anything with a Spare Parts icon (a little yellow cog symbol) and they'll get to work.
Since your AI partners aren't as strong as fully-fledged co-op companions, it's a good idea to save your Spare Parts for the toughest sections of each mission. This knowledge will come with time as you replay each level on harder difficulties, but a good rule of thumb is to save them for defense segments so you can support yourself with turrets and traps.
Make sure you instruct your allies to pick up any Spare Parts you find on the road, too! Each party member can only carry one, but you can restock at various POIs across each map. Just ping Spare Parts crates when someone is empty and they'll help themselves.
Loot the map
Since you won't have a full four-person squad of players backing you up, you're going to need all the firepower you can get to survive the hardest parts of John Carpenter's Toxic Commando solo.
The game's levels are open-ended with plenty of places to explore, so don't head straight to the objective when you load in. Open the map, mark a place that looks interesting, and make your way over there to secure the goods.
You can find Spare Parts, vehicles, heavy weapons, and more across each John Carpenter's Toxic Commando map. You'll get access to better starting equipment as you level up, but scavenging is the main way to get stronger in the early stages of the game.
Don't forget to ping gear for your allies! They won't pick up the good stuff unless you tell them to. Highlight heavy weapons, medical supplies, or any other items out in the field so your squad can power up alongside you.
Find a car
Each John Carpenter's Toxic Commando map is bigger than you'd think, so walking isn't going to cut it. Finding a car should be your first priority in every mission, especially when you're running solo.
Vehicles are marked on the map for you, and you can see each car's abilities by hovering over their map icons. You'll need a winch for a lot of stuff, so try to look for a truck with one attached. Just make sure to keep an eye out for gasoline on your travels.
A car is not only a means of transportation in John Carpenter's Toxic Commando, but also a safe haven. As a solo player, you can sit in the safety of the driver's seat while your allies shoot the incoming undead hordes. This is especially effective if you find a vehicle with a turret!
Use the right weapons
There are a ton of weapons to choose from in John Carpenter's Toxic Commando, but unfortunately, not all of them are ideal for solo play. You can greatly enhance your chances of solo survival by bringing the right loadout to your next mission.
As a solo player, you should avoid specialized weapons like shotguns and sniper rifles. They're really fun to use, but you can't rely on your AI teammates to cover you if you get overrun or need to reload.
Try using old-fashioned assault rifles and SMGs instead. You need something that can reload quickly and also shred big groups of zombies so your team doesn't get overwhelmed.
It'll be a bit harder to take down special infected without strong single-target guns like snipers or shotguns, but you can make things easier by pinging them for your teammates. Marking enemies will force your AI squad to focus their fire on a single target, so make sure you're giving orders when things get hectic!
Play the right class
There are four classes to choose from in John Carpenter's Toxic Commando, and each of them has some seriously cool tricks up their sleeves. Not every class is ideal for solo play, however.
A Medic main is everyone's best friend in co-op lobbies, but it's not going to get you through the hardest missions solo. Take a good look at each skill tree to see what you can unlock. Everyone's solo experience will be different, so keep an eye out for skills that address the specific concerns you have with your AI allies.
Generally, the default Strike class is the best for solo play (at least when starting out). This is primarily because of its default ability, which lets you destroy zombies with explosive energy blasts. It's a lifesaver in defense segments since you can easily clear zombies from objectives or thin the horde to make things easier for your teammates.
The Operator is another great fit for solo runs once you've gotten comfortable with the general flow of missions in John Carpenter's Toxic Commando. Its automated drone will give you an extra gun and give the zombies an extra target, both of which will greatly increase your chances of survival.

Search for Sludgite
Since you're the backbone of your squad as a solo player, you need to be at the top of your game to survive. That comes down to more than just skill. You also need to upgrade your gear and abilities.
That's where Sludgite comes in. You can find Sludgite crystals all over each map. Look for little orange crystals on the ground or check your map for specially marked zones with Sludge Seeds to boost your overall XP earnings. These spots will have a ton of resources to collect, but be ready for undead resistance. The floors are also covered in goop, so bring a car.
Sludgite is used to upgrade all of your weapons in John Carpenter's Toxic Commando, so grab as much of it as you can. There's no limit to how much you can carry, and you can farm missions repeatedly to collect as much as you need. Try running the first few missions back-to-back to get a headstart on your skill tree!
As you unlock more abilities and upgrade your arsenal, you'll be prepared for harder versions of the missions you've already cleared. Up the difficulty, collect even more rewards, and repeat.
