Killing Floor 3 guide: 6 tips for team composition, the best starting perk, and more

Now, Killing Floor 3 is here with a (mostly) new character roster, a myriad of features, and new tricks up the sleeve of almost every enemy of old. The onboarding is different, and plunging into the experience can be overwhelming. If you're looking for a few pointers, we've gathered six tips to get you started, diving deep into how they coexist with the rest of the experience.
The Sharpshooter is the best perk to start with
The first question you'll have might be the most obvious. Out of the six perks—Killing Floor 3's name for character classes—it can be hard to know which one to pick first. Considering that perks can now be leveled up to level 30, a task that also involves choosing abilities from skill trees along the way, it's difficult to know where to invest your time.

Thankfully, the Sharpshooter makes this decision easier. Focusing on assault and sniper rifles, Sharpshooter is all-around great for getting your bearings in the game. Her weapons are fairly easy to customize, and even if you take the most basic option as your first Frankenstein's monster to create a loadout for, you'll have a viable weapon in no time—one that will easily carry you safely into the latter waves, where you can go ahead and purchase one of the higher-tier guns.
It's also important to note how useful the Sharpshooter's main gadget is, which works similarly to an ultimate ability. Death's Hand summons a homing arrow that seeks and eliminates enemies on its own. There are plenty of upgrades available for it, but even in its default state, it can be a lifesaver. While there's rarely a bad time to use it, Death's Hand is at its best when you're trying to revive a teammate. Let the arrow help you fend off enemies from interrupting you and get your friend back on their feet safely. It's as stylish as it is effective.
Invest in weapon mods
Speaking of which, investing in weapon mods is crucial. All weapons in Killing Floor 3 have a different feel, and it'll likely take you a while to find your favorite for each perk. That said, the more matches you complete, the more resources you'll gather. Rather than having them sit in your inventory, pick one or two weapons from your favorite perks and create your own version in the armory.
There are two ways of accessing your customized weapons during matches. The first involves having enough operational budget to start a game with the weapon already in your inventory. The more you upgrade a gun, the higher its cost will be, so this might not be feasible for some time. This is because the operational budget increases when you gain a perk level. The alternative is much more amicable—make enough money during a match, and you can purchase it directly from the trader in-between waves. If you're not into creating your own loadouts, the trader will offer you modded versions of guns. But it's always best to get familiar with the attachments and mods available and have some direct control over the options that you choose.
Don’t ignore the multi-tool
Despite the fact that Killing Floor 3 hones in on the multi-tool during the tutorial, it's hard to find players who actually commit to it. This addition to the toolset is essential to every match. As the name indicates, you can use the tool to activate turrets, traps, ziplines, open both armor lockers and doors, and more.

The new installment in the series takes a different approach to level design and the way players navigate each map. There's an increase in verticality, and some areas tend to be massive. Enemies like the Husk can now stay on rooftops far away from you and your teammates' location to shoot at a distance, while smaller enemies can crawl on walls and ceilings. The multi-tool, then, lends a helping hand in giving you new advantages as well, creating escape options and deploying defensive maneuvers on a whim. As such, it's important to remember to actually use it.
It's okay to play on Normal difficulty
In Killing Floor 3, it'll take a while for you to feel really comfortable on Normal difficulty. You might be able to breeze through the first set of waves with a knowledgeable group, but actually making it to the boss multiple times will take practice. Until you've reached that point, it's best not to tempt fate by increasing the difficulty.
But there's no shame in sticking to Normal for a while, since you'll be making progress toward your perk levels, as well as gathering resources to improve weapons. It's always best to actually find a match and get all the bonus XP for defeating the boss rather than failing halfway through on a higher difficulty. You'll get there eventually, but don't be afraid to scale back.
Splitting roles is important
This has been true for every mainline game in the Killing Floor series, and Killing Floor 3 reinforces it. Splitting roles is as important a decision as the weapons you're carrying. It is possible to repeat perks in a single match, but there's little benefit to it. Even if you're playing with half of a full party, approaching a match with, say, a Medic, a Firebug, and a Commando will help cover much more ground. Each perk in the game is viable in its own way, and has both its pros and cons. While you can purchase weapons from other perks at the trader in-between waves, you'll likely have custom loadouts and skills selected for one corresponding class already. Focus on what you've been investing time into, and then coordinate with others to see what gaps have yet to be filled. Creating group synergy is key to surviving higher difficulties.
The environment is your friend
It can be easy to forget this, but if you're not actively looking for opportunities to use the environment against enemies, you're missing out on simple yet effective ways of defending yourself. Traps like foundry cauldrons and massive fans require the multi-tool to activate, but there are also objects like fuel tanks and barrels that can be exploited with just a few bullets or a well-placed explosive, and are equally helpful. Moreover, if you're running short on materials, always make sure to destroy tech like surveillance cameras and TV screens, as they'll grant you extra resources. Stop looking through your weapon's scope so often and you might find something to help you in your vicinity.
