LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight guide: How to unlock the coolest costumes

While LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight is an original take on Batman's career, the story references all sorts of Batman media. That means the World's Greatest Detective will change his cowl more than once during the main story, and you can unlock additional suits by exploring Gotham in between levels.
There are a ton of cool costumes for Batman, Catwoman, Robin, and the other playable characters in LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, but our guide will cover how to acquire the coolest suits you can unlock early in the game.
How to unlock costumes in LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Night
There are three ways to unlock new suits in LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight. The first method is just to play through the story! Each level will reward you with a new outfit for the featured playable characters.
You can also get new costumes by completing challenges and finding collectibles across Gotham in between missions. Whether it's rescuing escaped zoo animals, completing Riddler puzzles, or completing AR Challenges, there's no shortage of activities to keep you busy.
Lastly, you can purchase costumes from Bat-Mite's shop. The store is unlocked after you complete the first few story missions, and Bat-Mite will set up shop permanently in the Batcave with new stuff for you to buy. He also has locations throughout Gotham, so keep an eye out!
Absolute Batman
To unlock the Absolute Batman costume, you have to rescue zoo animals that have gotten loose across Gotham. You'll unlock this activity after meeting Catwoman early in the second chapter of the story.
Absolute Batman is a new take on the Caped Crusader featured in DC's new Absolute universe. Absolute Batman is bigger and stronger than the usual versions of the character, and the bat logo on his chest can be used as a massive two-handed axe.
Absolute Catwoman
To unlock the Absolute Catwoman costume, you need to complete enough Riddler Puzzle Rooms across Gotham. You'll unlock Riddler puzzles early in the first chapter of the story, and the first Riddler Puzzle Room is required to progress.
Just like Absolute Batman, Absolute Catwoman is a new take on Selina Kyle. The new designs for the Absolute comics have all been slam dunks, and Catwoman is no exception. This is already one of her most popular designs among fans.
Retro Video Game Batman
To unlock the Retro Video Game costume for Batman, you need to complete the Shreck's Department Store level at the beginning of the second chapter. This is the mission that introduces Catwoman, so you'll know when you're there.
This costume is based on the sprite from Batman: The Video Game on the Nintendo Entertainment System. That game was released in 1989 to coincide with the movie starring Michael Keaton as Batman. The developers went with a purple sprite to make Batman easier to see, and this costume calls back to that with a pixelated logo and bright highlights.
Batman '89
The Batman '89 suit is unlocked after reaching the second chapter of the main story. It'll be equipped automatically once you reach the Batcave.
This costume is from Tim Burton's 1989 Batman film starring Michael Keaton and Jack Nicholson. This is the suit that the Retro Video Game outfit is emulating! It's an iconic costume, and the in-game description even calls out the suit's famously stiff neck.
The Dark Knight Gordon
The Dark Knight costume for Commissioner Gordon is unlocked during the first chapter of the main story. You can't miss it.
This is one of Gordon's best outfits, even if it's a little on the serious side for a LEGO game. This is based on Gordon's look in The Dark Knight, which had Christian Bale taking up the role of Batman. It's perfect for rolling around Gotham and stopping crimes!
Batman Prime
The Batman Prime costume can be purchased from Bat-Mite's shop for 50,000 Studs. You'll have to buy a few things from Bat-Mite before it'll show up in stock.
This is the suit from the original LEGO Batman video game all the way back in 2008. LEGO began producing Batman figures in 2006, and this suit is based on that exact minifigure. LEGO games have come a long way since then, so this is a nice way to honor the series' history.
Legacy of the Dark Knight Originals
The Legacy of the Dark Knight suits can be purchased from Bat-Mite's shop for 35,000 Studs each. Batman's suit is one of the first things Bat-Mite sells, but the other suits will only show up once you buy more things.
These are original designs created specifically for LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight. Sporting a bold blue and orange color scheme, these fit in nicely with the other costumes on offer. Plus, you can make everyone match!
Batman Ninja
The Batman Ninja suit is unlocked by completing The Penguin mission near the start of the second main story chapter. This is right after you unlock Catwoman.
Based on the 2018 animated film Batman Ninja, this is one of Batman's most unique costumes ever. Feudal Japan is a radically different environment from modern-day Gotham, so the Caped Crusader had to make some modifications to his gear. The result is an awesome ninja-inspired Batsuit.
The Cat Woman
The Cat Woman costume is also unlocked by completing The Penguin mission in chapter two.
This suit is based on Catwoman's original costume from 1940. Selina's fashion sense has evolved quite a lot over the last 80 years, and she's moved on from the cat mask in favor of more practical equipment. Still, this costume's a lot of fun!
Batman Beyond
The Batman Beyond suit can only be unlocked with the Batman Beyond pack, included with the Digital Deluxe Edition of LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight.
Including a DLC suit on this list may seem like cheating, but the Batman Beyond costume is just too cool not to mention. It looks great in this LEGO rendition of Gotham, and you can make the entire Bat family match with their own Beyond suits. The Deluxe Edition also includes Arkham skins, which look fantastic in LEGO form.
