Marvel Rivals Cyclops guide: best tips, abilities, and season 8.5 breakdown

While the tanky Devil Dinosaur, who was introduced at the start of Season 8, required you to dive into the thick of the fray, Cyclops’ playstyle as a Duelist focuses on sniping opponents from afar. Our Marvel Rivals Cyclops guide has all the details you need to effectively utilize his abilities, along with a breakdown of the new content added in Season 8.5.
New Hero: Cyclops’ Skills and Abilities
- Optic Blast (LMB): Fire a quick burst of kinetic force forward. Hitting enemies accelerates the Ricochet Force charge rate.
- Concussive Beam (RMB): Continuously fire a powerful beam that refracts between enemies and the environment. Hitting enemies accelerates the Ricochet Force charge rate.
- Propulsion Burst (Left Shift): Fire a propulsion beam to push yourself and your target backward, applying a slow effect to the enemy.
- Ricochet Force (E key): Fire a beam that diffracts and tracks nearby enemies after hitting terrain. Upon use, Cyclops gains bonus health.
- Optic Ascent (F key): Fire a propulsion beam directly downward to launch yourself upward and knock back any enemies hit, applying a slow effect to them.
- Ruby Rage (Q key - Ultimate): Remove your visor and fire a powerful sweeping beam forward, destroying all barriers in its path. The blast leaves behind volatile energy that erupts to deal massive secondary explosive damage.
- Kinetic Hover (Passive): Enter a slow-fall state when channeling Concussive Beam while in mid-air.
- Red Adamantium (Wolverine Team-Up): Supercharge Wolverine’s claws to extend his attack range. Wolverine’s Vicious Rampage is replaced by Kinetic Claws, which causes him to execute a forward lunge that triggers a flurry of slashes.
How to Effectively Use Cyclops in Combat
As mentioned earlier, Cyclops is a Duelist. He excels at dealing damage to enemy combatants and possesses immense potential to rack up eliminations. His playstyle is incredibly accessible and easy to learn, yet highly rewarding when you consistently land your shots.
First up is his standard Optic Blast. While you can simply hold down the left mouse button, you'll get much better results by tapping it rhythmically to hit targets with precise headshots. Optic Blast boasts impressive range, allowing you to hang back safely while your Vanguards advance.
Concussive Beam, meanwhile, is the skill that makes Cyclops truly shine. Its refraction effect lets you chain damage across multiple opponents bunched up together—a scenario that happens constantly around objectives. Thanks to the narrow hallways, capture zones, and choke points scattered across every map, you’re bound to melt entire groups just by holding down the trigger. For an even greater advantage, activate Optic Ascent to hover in mid-air and rain down your channeled beam from above enemy shields.
For survivability, activate Ricochet Force right as you engage the opposing team to buffer your health pool with its bonus shield. If enemies try to duck behind cover, you can cast the projectile directly at a nearby wall to make it bounce around the corner and track them down. It's a fantastic tool for netting stylish "trick shot" eliminations.
When things get too hot, look to Propulsion Burst. This backstep maneuver serves as your primary escape tool. Keep in mind that Cyclops struggles immensely against agile dive heroes who can instantly close the gap—such as Daredevil, Spider-Man, Rogue, Angela, and Iron Fist.
It is absolutely imperative that you slow these flankers down with Propulsion Burst and immediately use the backward momentum to reposition near your team.
Finally, your Ruby Rage ultimate unleashes a devastating wave of energy in a wide, straight line. The initial sweeping beam instantly vaporizes barriers and deployed enemy contraptions, which is immediately followed by a massive secondary explosion within the area of effect. To maximize its impact, save this ultimate for cramped sections of the map or combo it with hard crowd-control abilities like Groot’s Strangling Prison or Storm’s Omega Hurricane.
Note: If you are playing against a Cyclops, be aware that his ultimate's only audio cue is a loud yell. It can be difficult to discern in the middle of a chaotic team fight compared to other heroes' distinct ultimate lines. If you spot the wide targeting arc appearing on the ground, sidestep immediately to avoid the secondary burst.
New Game Mode and Map: Bounty Annihilation and K'un-Lun: Shenloong Arena
Season 8.5 also introduces an 18v18 game mode and map that deliver pure, unadulterated chaos. Dubbed Bounty Annihilation, the mode takes place in the sacred K'un-Lun: Shenloong Arena. Here is what you need to know:
- Queue Times: Matchmaking for a massive 36-player mode can occasionally take a while. If you're stuck in queue, swap over to Bounty Annihilation (Inc. AI). This populates the match with six human players and 12 AI-controlled bots per team so you can jump right in.
- The Rules: Points are awarded both for eliminating enemies and holding active capture zones. The first team to reach 300 points claims victory.
- Dynamic Respawns: There are three capture zones on the map, but only one dictates the action at any given time. If you get taken down, you can freely select a new respawn point to get back into the action instantly.
- No Hero Limits: Character restrictions are completely disabled here. You can run an entire squad of Cyclops players, all happily chaining Concussive Beams into massive crowds. Other heroes with heavy area-of-effect or split damage—like Moon Knight, Iron Man, Namor, and Squirrel Girl—are absolute powerhouses in this mode.
New Event: Shenloong Tournament
Similar to previous limited-time events, the Shenloong Tournament simply requires you to play matches and accumulate event XP. Free track rewards include the Uncanny Warrior spray (Cyclops), the A Murder Foretold gallery card (featuring Apocalypse), and various items for Groot. Grinding all the way to Rank 12 unlocks the ultimate reward: Groot’s gorgeous Ironwood Serpent costume.
New Cosmetics and Reruns: 616 Vault, Summer Special, and More
Season 8.5 brings a massive wave of cosmetics to the store, many of which are bundled together at a discount. The headliner is the Weapon M and White Crown Phoenix Combo Bundle, which packages together stunning titular outfits for Cyclops and Phoenix alongside custom nameplates, emotes, and MVP cutscenes.
