After spending more than a year in Early Access, No More Room in Hell 2 is just a few short months away from its much-anticipated 1.0 release.

The sequel to the popular Source mod from Lever Games, No More Room in Hell 2 is an eight-player co-op zombie survival game where you have to work together with your teammates to fight the undead and complete objectives before extracting to safety. Chivalry 2 developer Torn Banner Studios acquired the original team prior to the EA launch in 2024, and together they’ve been steadily improving the game with substantial updates.

If you’re new to the grisly and unforgiving world of NMRIH 2, here’s a quick primer on what it’s all about, and how much it’s grown over the last year-and-a-half of development.

A never-ending zombie movie

Have you ever watched a zombie movie and wondered how much better you’d be at surviving if you were in the characters’ shoes? Well, that’s one of the core concepts behind NMRIH 2: It’s heavily inspired by director George A. Romero’s classic zombie films, and Torn Banner Studios wants you to feel like you’re playing out your own zombie story in every match.

This starts with the relationship you have with your Responders, which are the characters you create (you can have up to three) when you begin the game for the first time. The physical traits of your Responders and their backstories are randomized, and you can further tweak them to your liking by changing their skin tone, hair style, and voice.

At the beginning of a match, you spawn completely alone, with hardly any weapons, and often in the darkness of night—your flashlight quickly becomes your best friend. No More Room in Hell 2 doesn’t have any giant arrows or other obvious UI elements pointing you in the right direction, so you’ll have to rely on your map and compass to see what objectives are available to you.

Zombies will already be roaming nearby at this point, and you’ll have to be careful about which fights you get into so you don’t get overwhelmed. You can arm yourself by collecting gear and weapons scattered in the environment. And as you complete objectives, you’ll hopefully see signs of other players running around that you can team up with.

Once all eight Responders are together, the goal is to defend each other while finishing the final mission and extracting from the map. Your character earns experience points after successfully completing a game, and this will unlock items and weapons you can purchase (via in-game credits) for their starting loadout, making you better-equipped for the next match.

Once your character levels up, you’ll also receive more skill slots for equipping special abilities like increased damage resistance or consuming less stamina when running. Over time, this lets you create powerful builds for your Responders that change the way you play the game. But just like in the movies, these characters can die—either from their battle wounds, or from being infected and turning into a zombie themselves.

Any progress you’ve made with your Responder, including their loadout items, will be gone forever. You’re then forced to play with one of your weaker heroes, or if you have no one else, just start over with a brand new person from scratch. The permadeath system ensures that every match in NMRIH 2 feels dangerous and consequential.

But whether your Responder lives or dies, you’ll always earn progress for your account level. As your account level increases, you’ll earn more unique skills for your characters, as well as stronger versions of skills you’ve already unlocked.

Early Access upgrades

No More Room in Hell 2 is a more complete multiplayer experience now than it was back in 2024. Along with a ton of quality of life improvements, Torn Banner has added several new maps for the signature Objective mode.

The first map to debut with the game was Power Plant, a massive area that tasks players with surviving in the Pennsylvania wilderness. Four more maps have since become available, including several towns (Pottsville and Lewiston) and locales from New York City (Broadway and Hospital). And if you pay close attention, each map adds new story clues about the state of the world and how humanity is faring in the zombie apocalypse.

Both melee and ranged weapons have been completely overhauled. Torn Banner is known for its crunchy melee combat with the Chivalry series, and that’s now better-reflected in NMRIH 2, making it satisfying to crush a zombie’s head in with a shovel or hack off their limbs with an axe. The game’s arsenal of firearms has also greatly expanded, and you can find various attachments like scopes and suppressors to increase their effectiveness.

The developers have gradually added multiple types of zombies as well, like the traditional slow-moving walkers and runners as well as more heavily armored foes such as zombie firefighters and riot police zombies holding shields. You’ll have to adapt your combat strategy depending on which ones you run into in the game.

The Revelation update (0.9) that came out in early April, which focused on difficulty tuning and refinements to guns, was the last major addition before 1.0.

What to expect in 1.0

As of publication, Torn Banner hasn’t announced a specific date for No More Room in Hell 2’s 1.0 release. It has continued to stick by its original estimate of launching in the first half of 2026. In addition to more optimization and bug fixes, the studio said that 1.0 will come with two new modes.

This includes the introduction of Survival, a second multiplayer mode where players will have to defend a location from waves of increasingly difficult zombies. Survival will come with its own set of maps that are much smaller than the ones in the Objective mode, and feature even more aggressive zombie behavior.

For the first time, players will have the option to play by themselves in the Solo Training mode. You won’t be able to earn XP in Solo Training, but on the flip side, permadeath is also turned off. This means you can freely explore the maps and mission types without the threat of losing your precious characters.

This is far from an exhaustive list of 1.0’s new features. The developer teased that more content and changes are planned for the release, and that it’ll share more details closer to launch.

One important thing to note if you decide to jump into Early Access: Torn Banner will wipe away everyone’s character and account progression right before 1.0 comes out. However, they are planning to award exclusive customization patterns and icons in the full game as a thank you to the EA community.

You can start creating your own zombie survival stories right now in the Early Access version of No More Room in Hell 2, which is available on Epic Games Store.
