Outbound guide: 16 tips covering crafting, resources, camping, and more

Our Outbound guide has over a dozen tips to help you craft items, unlock blueprints, recharge your vehicle, camp, gather resources, and more, plus progression requirements for the first zone.
Choose the right vehicle
One of the most important Outbound tips concerns the vehicle that you choose at the start of the campaign. Three are available by default: Classic, Pathmaker, and Big One. They differ based on their building space, carrying weight, and handling.
We recommend trying out the Big One. Although it has poor handling, its building space and carrying weight stats are quite high.
Download blueprints from towers and terminals
To unlock new crafting blueprints via towers and terminals, you must spend 1x Download Voucher. This item is created via the Recycler at the cost of 2x Litter (more on this later).
Terminals offer multiple blueprints to choose from, but don’t fret if you miss out on certain options. Those that you didn’t pick will have a chance to appear in other towers later on. Even better, certain towers that you’ve already activated might receive another radio signal after a few days pass.
Craftable items appear in the following interfaces:
- Workbench: Craft tools and upgrades via your vehicle’s trunk.
- Build menu: Place Workstations in your vehicle by setting up camp and pressing the “B” key.
- Workstations: Check each active Workstation’s menu.
Craft tools and create Workstations
The Fire Lookout terminal lets you select a particular tool:
- Axe: Chops fallen dead logs.
- Pickaxe: Breaks large deposits of rocks.
- Sickle: Cuts down large bushes and wheat.
As for Workstations, we recommend the following early in the campaign:
- Recycler: Turns Litter into Download Vouchers.
- Food Processor: Makes ingredients into edible food.
- Sawmill: Turns Wood into Planks.
- Metal Smelter: Smelts ore into metals.
- Sewing Table: Gear upgrades for your character and pet.
- Vehicle Research Station: Activates additional upgrades for your vehicle.
Campsites have a lot of goodies
While driving around, keep your eyes peeled for campsites:
- Light the campfire to add that location to your collectibles tally.
- Open chests and loot materials.
- Pick up scattered Litter for the Recycler.
- Collect Bottlecaps for Cap-N-Snap machines.
Gather or harvest ingredients so you can cook food
An important Outbound tip to keep in mind is that you should always have some edible food on hand. Going hungry for prolonged periods causes your character to lose health.
- The Food Processor can turn Roadberries into Jam. Later, you can use Coconut and Water to make Coconut Smoothies.
- The Baking Oven allows you to make Bread and other pastries.
- It’s possible to pick up and eat consumable items that you find in the wilderness. Examples include Bread, Carrots, Bananas, and Amber Morel.
- Once you have a Crop Plot, you can place it on your van via the Build menu. Place fruits, vegetables, or wheat and water the crops until they’re ready to be harvested.
Recharge your vehicle’s battery periodically
There are multiple methods to recharge your vehicle’s battery in Outbound:
- Open the trunk and interact with the Power Unit. Place materials like Wood and Fiber, then click on the “On” button.
- Pick the Wind Turbine or Solar Panel blueprint and craft it via the Build menu.
- Park your vehicle near a charging station and press the button.
Expand your vehicle through modular enhancements
Your vehicle might seem cramped with all the workstations that you place. Fortunately, the Build menu has modular improvements that expand the available space.
Construct additional floors, walls, and roofs to create rooms and enclosures. Other counters and workstations can be placed on floors above your van.
Likewise, you can create patios by leaving open sections surrounded by railings. Then, decorate it with chairs, tables, lights, flowers, and other cosmetics. Lastly, the Vehicle Research Station lets you increase the outdoor building space and overall weight capacity.
Upgrade your character’s inventory capacity and survivability
Don’t forget to focus on character upgrades, too:
- The Sewing Table allows you to craft an upgrade for your backpack, which increases your inventory capacity from 20 to 40.
- Clothing upgrades for your shirt and pants increase your health and stamina, respectively.
- Once you unlock the Gear Research Station blueprint, you’ll be able to craft higher-tier bonuses for your character.
Repair structures and shortcuts
From time to time, you’ll encounter structures that help with traversal and navigation. Broken bridges can be repaired using various types of wooden Planks, which are crafted via the Sawmill. Likewise, it’s possible to lower the drawbridge that connects the middle section and the initial area. There’s also a large vehicle elevator that you should be able to interact with.
Find a dog companion during your travels
Later in the game, you’ll come across a sanctuary where you’ll find a dog companion. By default, your pet can stay or follow you around. You can also give it treats.
Upon unlocking the Companion Research Station, you’ll see upgrades for new abilities. Examples include training your dog to search for specific materials and making it return to your vehicle to store items. The Companion Training Station, meanwhile, lets you teach these new commands to your dog.
Keep your eyes peeled for collectibles and secrets
Another Outbound tip to remember is that the world is full of collectibles, such as:
- Campfires: Light each one to add it to your tally.
- Cairns: Stack a stone on top of these objects.
- Gnomes: Pick these up in various locations.
- Paintings: There are over a dozen of these.
- Cap-N-Snap: Obtain Bottlecaps as currency and spend them to claim prizes like bobbleheads and charms.
Point-of-interest 1: Fire Lookout
The main objective in each biome in Outbound is to discover points-of-interest, which have large question mark icons on the map. These landmarks have terminals with blueprint rewards. However, to access the terminal, you must find three key items: Terminal Executable (diskette), Signal Decryptor (USB Stick), and Password Databank (encrypted drive).
The Fire Lookout, which is just a short distance away from where you start the game, is the first location that you need to visit:
- Terminal Executable: On the counter near the computer.
- Signal Decryptor and Password Databank: On the rooftop patio.
- Reward: Choose from the Axe, Pickaxe, or Sickle.
Point-of-interest 2: Large Treehut
After crossing the river and heading northwest, you’ll spot the Large Treehouse:
- Signal Decryptor: On a shelf in the main room.
- Password Databank: Climb the ladder to the left. It’s next to several glass containers with mushrooms.
- Terminal Executable: Climb the ladder to the right. It’s on a small wooden table.
- Reward: Choose from the Metal Smelter or Nailing Station.
Point-of-interest 3: Windmill
The Windmill is due east of the Large Treehut:
- You need to unlock Motor Upgrade I via the Vehicle Research Station if you want to drive your van up the steep roads. Alternatively, you can keep trekking on foot.
- The terminal room is locked since you have to repair the Windmill first. Go up the steps and interact with the left-hand lever to rotate the upper floor. You can then jump on the crates to press the button.
- Climb up another ladder and use 20x Scrap Metal to repair the cogwheel. Pull the lever to activate the Windmill.
This unlocks the terminal room, but don’t forget the three key items:
- Signal Decryptor: In the greenhouse at the back of the structure.
- Terminal Executable: On a box near the cogwheel.
- Password Databank: On a shelf in the terminal room.
- Reward: Mortar and Pestle
Point-of-interest 4: Sunbeam Acres Farm
There’s an optional objective to repair the Cloudseeders. Simply use 4x Scrap Metal to repair the water hose and press the button. Rest for the night, and you’ll be able to harvest 12x Wheat the next day. As for the key items:
- Password Databank: Inside the small shed.
- Terminal Executable: On a table in the large barn with the computer.
- Signal Decryptor: Inside the farmhouse.
- Reward: Spinning Wheel.
Continue onward to the next biome
Once you’ve finished the main objectives in the forest, it’s time to head to the coast. Keep traveling northwest until you see a tunnel with a cave in. If you already have the Axe II upgrade, you can use it to smash the rocks and create a path for your vehicle.
