There are oddly peaceful, reflective moments in Cococucumber’s final game in its Voxel Trilogy; places where the eponymous hero Ravenlok can stare quietly at the colorful landscape that spreads before her in all of its voxel beauty. It’s an apt metaphor for the game and the people who create it.

Ravenlok the game seems at times as introspective and reflective as the character for which it’s named. On its surface the action-adventure RPG is about escaping into a fantasy world to resolve real-world problems that seem insurmountable. Finding themselves on the other side of a looking glass, players have to figure out how to get to and defeat Queen Dreda who has brought ruin to the land of Dunia and its eclectic population.
 

There’s a lot of adventuring through colorful locations like the Mushroom Forest, Labyrinth, and Clock Tower as you solve puzzles and complete quests on your journey to a final confrontation. Combat against walking mushrooms, malevolent playing cards, and steampunk mechanisms  is mostly with sword and shield – and a little help from some magic. Ultimately, the game delivers a burst of colorful entertainment pulled along by a heartfelt story. Playing through the title also underscores that it’s equally about the game’s artists and their growth as a talented studio as they created the trio of titles: Riverbond, Echo Generation and now Ravenlok.

The artistry with which the team evolved the voxel aesthetic to the point that it seems to escape definition. The poignant leitmotif of the game’s soundtrack. The narrative conclusion that brings everyone together for a celebration and a fond farewell as they look out at all they have created. Those elements all pull together the short hero’s journey of the game, which at its best moments evoke Zelda-like quests and combat.

Ravenlok is Cococucumber’s is a fitting conclusion to the Voxel Trilogy and, it feels like, a promise that more wonderful adventures are to come. Purchase or wishlist the game right here.
