There’s a new fighter in town that has you laying down Vicious Mist, delivering Sumoslaps, and Omega Cyclones to the unwary as you duke it out in a 40-person brawler royale developed by Iron Galaxy Studios.

Rumbleverse, revealed during The Game Awards, is a free-to-play title published by Epic Games and set to enter early access on Feb. 8. It will be available on PC via the Epic Games Store, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Xbox One consoles and support crossplay and cross-progression.

“We’ve always loved designing melee combat, but we wanted to create a game that was more social on a larger scale,” said Adam Boyes, Iron Galaxy co-CEO. “Rumbleverse is about exploring a city as much as it is about throwing a punch. We’ve combined a lot of what we love about games into an experience that is as hilarious as it is competitive.”

Each match starts with players falling from the skies into Grapital City, where they will scrounge for special moves, powder ups, and health—all while laying a beatdown on their opponents. Almost every object in the streets can be a weapon and players can climb every building, from the smallest shack to the highest skyscraper.

Iron Galaxy is hosting a Rumbleverse First Look gameplay event on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S on Friday, Dec. 10. The limited-time event will be open to a select number of lucky players who will be among the first to drop into Grapital City. Interested players can head over to www.rumbleverse.com to sign up.

From what we’ve seen, humor will be at the heart of the brawler, with players customizing their fighters with an eclectic array of mix-and-match items before launching into a brawl.

The brawlers can climb just about anything in the city, punching, kicking, and elbow-dropping their way to the ever-shrinking winner’s circle. You can also unlock new moves in each fight, mastering two at any one time. Containers of health powder let you level up your health, stamina, and the damage you do for each match, as well.

The key to victory is ensuring you don’t get knocked out before everyone else.

While Rumberverse seems to be leaning into the mechanics of a particular sort of fighting game, the developers at Iron Galaxy Studios say they don’t see Rumbleverse as a traditional fighting title.

“You’ll climb skyscrapers and leap from rooftop to rooftop,” Boyes said. “You’ll smash crates and grab upgrades that will change the way you fight for that match. Creating your own unique character and adding new items to your locker room over time will be a great outlet for creative expression. There are modes where teamwork will be essential to victory.”
