The latest entry in The Legend of Heroes series, Trails Beyond the Horizon, launches this month. With over a dozen mainline games, many of its stories overlap and are direct sequels of each other. As a result, newcomers sometimes feel daunted about getting into Trails, not knowing where to start. Luckily, we have a guide on how to start the Trails series and which games are available on Epic Games Store.

If you’re here, you’re likely a Trails veteran who doesn't necessarily need tips on how to navigate these games. However, many tips and tricks in Beyond the Horizon can be applicable to many of the other Trails games too, including the previous two Daybreak games. Our guide will help you get started in the nation of Calvard, with pointers on what to prioritize, how to set up your characters in battle, and more.

Side quests give loot and lore

Side Quests
One of the reasons why players love the Trails series is because of its deep worldbuilding, with a lot of it being done through side quests. You’ll learn a lot about Calvard and the daily lives of people living in it. These side quests can range from simple fetch quests to monster exterminations to even confrontations with hostile enemies.

Each one expands the Trails lore further and even rewards you with items that can help you along your journey. This gives you even more of an incentive to complete them. At the end of each chapter, you’ll receive a report card detailing your progress. The more quests you complete, the more SP you gain, which impacts your rank and score. As you accumulate SP throughout the game, you’ll earn even more rewards, like powerful accessories to equip.

You can see shop updates on the map

Shops
Whenever you reach a new location or start a new chapter in Beyond the Horizon, shops and vendors will stock up on new items for you to look at. These can include weapons, food, and drinks. In order to keep up with new enemies, you’ll need to monitor your party’s equipment to make sure they’re well-equipped to take on upcoming threats.

New weapons and armor, of course, let you deal out and take more damage. Food and drinks can be consumed to heal HP during and outside of battle, which can be helpful in conserving EP by substituting for healing spells.

Whenever new inventory arrives, you can look at your map to see if any of the shop icons are red instead of gray. This lets you know when there’s something fresh in stock for you to check out.

The Grim Garten is a great place to farm

Grim Garten
The Grim Garten is a roguelike dungeon filled with monsters and treasure chests that you can tackle in your free time. While the first half of the dungeon is mandatory, the second half is not. However, it’s well worth exploring as more floors open up as you progress through the story. Defeating the bosses on these floors can yield strong equipment that you can take with you to the main story, which can help you overcome some of the late-game bosses that are sure to pack a punch.

You can also experience backstories of some characters, particularly some of the antagonists, as you make your way through Grim Garten, which adds even more worldbuilding and character development to Beyond the Horizon.

Equip Golden Eye and experiment with Shard Abilities

Orbment Quartz
Shard Abilities are Beyond the Horizon’s form of customization. By equipping different gems called Quartz, you can unlock different passive abilities that give you an edge in battle. Depending on their rarity and elemental value, you can stack Quartz to discover more powerful Shard abilities. As you continue to find more Quartz, spend time with the Orbment system and experiment to see what you can find. It could mean the difference between victory and defeat!

One very helpful Shard Ability early on in the game to look out for is Golden Eye. This lets you see all treasure chests out in the field. This way, you won’t have to waste time looking through every nook and cranny to find one, since it’s possible you could overlook one. With Golden Eye, you don’t have to worry.

To unlock Golden Eye, all you have to do is place a Mind elemental Quartz with a x2 modifier on the Extra Line in any party member’s Orbment. These are easy to come by, and you already might have them. Mind 1 is a beginner Quartz and fulfills the requirements.

Be patient during Field battles

Field Battles
Beyond the Horizon’s combat system is split into two parts, the Field battle and the Command battles. The former is the real-time action portion where you can continuously hit enemies until they get stunned. After doing so, you can transition straight into Command battles, which consists of the traditional turn-based combat that Trails fans come to expect.

During Field battles, you take more damage than do during Command ones. Enemies are sometimes immune to flinching, so even when you try to hit them out of an attack, they’ll still sometimes follow through. To avoid taking unnecessary damage, be patient and read your enemy’s movements. If you dodge their attacks at the last second, you can activate a Cross Charge, which is a powerful counterattack that deals extra damage. This ensures that you’re dealing plenty of damage while minimizing the damage done to you.

Spread out as much as possible

Command Battles
During Command battles, it’s important to spread your party out as much as possible so that they can avoid damage. Many, if not all enemies in Beyond the Horizon have spread moves that hit a wide range. Make sure that not all of your characters are close together, as they’ll likely all get hit. If they’re spread apart, then that reduces those chances.

But you also don’t want your characters to be so spread apart that they can't initiate follow-up attacks or give bonuses to each other. Being able to balance between staying safe and going on the offensive is key to winning battles.
