IF GAMES ARE ART, WHICH WAY IS THE GIFT SHOP?

This is the third game TERRI VELLMANN and I have made together, (HEAVY BULLETS and HIGH HELL before), and it's by far the most ambitious yet “out there” of our arts yet. TERRI was unsane enough to let me write this game along with doing Music Composition and SoundDesign. Meanwhile TERRI did EVERYTHING else, ART, DESIGN, CODE and holds down the creative center from which our humor and heart stems from.  We work together professionally but also casually allowing for ourselves to seep into the game while still staying critical of one another’s good, better and best ideas. Thus we have SLUDGE LIFE and open world, first person, wak’d out walking simulator full of weirdos, wonder and walls to TAG.

SLUDGE LIFE is made out of real life, our lives, and many megabytes of imagination. On our paths to making games Terri and I wrote graffiti and found it to be a “gateway art “ leading to where we are today. So this game isn’t necessarily about graffiti or drugs or society, its about “looking up” and the feeling of painting in a perfect but dangerous place. SLUDGE LIFE began as TERRI followed his gut on making an FPS with no gun. Inspired by HIGH HELL and the “Budget Parkour” aspect of exploring its levels, TERRI wanted to make something that let players climb, jump and slink their way freely around a world. Tagging Graffiti everywhere inadvertently became the perfect mechanic to drive players around a slab of city in which everything is scalable and explorable. Once we discovered this balance between exploration and low poly vandalism we began to add idiots, animals, and items to our little island.

One of our favoritest individuals on that island is BIG MUD, who actually coined the phrase “SLUDGE LIFE”, a rapping frog who makes beats all day in his shipping container slash apartment. BIG MUD raps in English, everyone else on the island only speaks SLUDGE, cause he’s trying to blow up and get off the pile of pipes he was born on. We’re not sure how, but BIG MUD landed himself digital distribution in our world, and you can listen to his EP on SPOTIFY or grab his 7” in REAL LIFE (www.SHOPSLUDGELIFE.com). The “BUBBLE UP” EP is a slappin set of songs that serve as a decoder ring for SLUDGE LIFE and the refinery island it all takes place on.

BIG MUD is all about that SLUDGE LIFE, and we hope you are too after doing some ZOOMS, tagging a rooftop, breaking into GLUG, and smoking one with CIGGY! This game is made with computers, but it’s mostly made with personality, life experience and intuition. The only thing it needs now is YOU, to pilot your curiosity across its details, secrets, and pipes. SO watch out for CLOPS, pet that DOGE, and stare directly into both barrels of the DOUBLE BUTTHOLE CAT!
