Most of these new abilities are called Doom Powers, a form of genetic mutation fused from Shadow’s arch nemesis Black Doom, and you’ll unlock more powers as you confront him over the course of the campaign. Our Sonic x Shadow Generations guide goes over all the abilities in this mode, how to unlock them, and how to make use of them in both the action stages and the Sonic Frontiers-inspired open-world White Space hub.
Chaos Control
This is Shadow’s signature ability that’s been around since he was first introduced in Sonic Adventure 2, so you fortunately start with this from the beginning. Chaos Control stops time for approximately six seconds, freezing both moving objects and traps, as well as enemies. This makes it easier to avoid dangerous areas, although spikes can still hurt you. If you see a green trail of light, touch it when Chaos Control is activated and you’ll perform a Chaos Dash that acts as a shortcut.
To use Chaos Control, you need to build up a gauge displayed at the bottom of the screen by defeating enemies, although you can also come across item boxes with a lightning symbol (the same as the Chaos Control symbol on the gauge) that automatically fill up the gauge, then use F/LT/L2 (key presses in this guide will follow PC/Xbox/PlayStation layout) to activate. Bear in mind that Chaos Control cannot be manually turned off. It does however also freeze the timer, which makes it very handy to use if you’re aiming to finish a stage with an S rank.
Doom Spears
The first Doom Power can be unlocked after you have completed Act 2 of Space Colony ARK, where you will be rewarded with a Doom’s Gear. You can use this on a power-sealing device, which appears conveniently close to the stage entrance.

Doom Spears allows Shadow to shoot up to five spears at targets, which can include enemies and switches. Just hold L/Y/Triangle to automatically lock onto targets in front of you and release to fire. While these projectiles may not necessarily destroy enemies, it can still stun them. For some enemies that have electrical shields to protect them, you’ll need to use Doom Spears to disable the shield before you can attack.
Some routes may also require hitting five switches simultaneously in order to open the way, especially in White Space, so if you come across somewhere you can’t enter, check your surroundings carefully.
Doom Blast
Doom Blast is the second power you can unlock, and the Doom’s Gear required will be awarded after you have completed both acts in Rail Canyon. The power-sealing device you need to use the gear on is at the top of the tall structure behind the entrance to Rail Canyon.
This ability is used on certain enemies that you can’t destroy with a regular spin attack, such as a blade-wielding foe that’s standing on a platform next to the Rail Canyon entrance in the White Space. Hold down K/X/Square to launch the enemy in the air and then you can aim and knock the enemy away again. This can be used to smash them through a wall, and then you'll teleport to where the enemy lands, making it also a form of traversal.
Doom Blast is also used in certain boss fights where you launch and knock the boss into parts of the environment to deal damage. While this power is only used in very specific situations, it’s still a very stylish move to execute.
Doom Surf
To unlock Doom Surf, you must first defeat the first boss, Biolizard. The boss gate requires three boss gate keys which you can obtain by completing short Challenge Acts, which only appear once you’ve approached the boss gate for the first time. Once you obtain the Doom’s Gear, the power-sealing device is back on the ground, which you can reach by following the trail of enemies and rails that lead you down there.
This is one of the most useful Doom Powers for traversing much of the White Space that’s largely surrounded by water. Instead of sinking and drowning, you’ll automatically surf on water, allowing you to reach more of the map. If you approach a ramp, jump at the last moment and you’ll get a boost that takes you further.
While using it to traverse water in stages, you can also use the shoulder buttons to perform a spin attack to the left (Q/LB/L1) or to the right (E/RB/R1). This is handy for destroying crates in your way or deflecting objects in a boss fight.
Doom Morph
You can unlock Doom Morph after defeating the second boss, Metal Overlord. The boss gate requires three boss gate keys obtained from completing more Challenge Acts. The power-sealing device you need to use the Doom’s Gear on is located on the northwest part of the White Space map, and you may have to wade through some purple corruption to reach it.

With Doom Morph, you can jump through a Morph Ball that changes your form, allowing you to essentially swim through the corruption, much like surfing on water with Doom Surf. The difference is that corruption can also be on walls and ceilings, giving you even more freedom to traverse.
Morph Balls can also be found floating in the air, so if you hold K/X/Square in midair, you’ll grab and swing on it like a vine, which also allows you to traverse to previously unreachable areas.
Doom Wing
The final Doom Power is arguably the best one, and which you will have gotten a taste of in Space Colony ARK Act 2. To unlock it properly, you need to defeat the third boss, Mephiles. This boss gate requires four boss gate keys, which means you need to complete all remaining Challenge Acts.
The last power-sealing device is on a cliff to the west of the map, which you’ll need Doom Morph to swim up to. Before using the Doom’s Gear, you’ll also need to open all the Black Moon eyes from Doom’s Eye in the center of the map. This is done using items you obtain after encountering Black Doom during the stages Space Colony ARK Act 1, Rail Canyon Act 1, and Sunset Heights Act 1 and successfully attacking him when prompted. If some Black Moon eyes are still closed, you may need to replay some of these stages.
Doom Wing is Shadow’s equivalent of Super Sonic, granting him invincibility as well as the ability to glide by boosting while in the air by holding Left Ctrl/RT/R2. The number of rings you have will also deplete every second, so you’ll also need to ensure you’re collecting rings while in this form.
As you can imagine, this kind of traversal can allow you to cover stages much faster, so it’s a big incentive for revisiting stages with this new power. But to also make it fair, there are two separate leaderboards for replaying stages with Doom Wing turned on or off.
That’s all you need to know in our Sonic x Shadow Generations guide for Shadow’s abilities. Make sure to use these abilities to explore all of the White Space to also unlock more bonus goodies like artwork and soundtracks.
Sonic x Shadow Generations is available on the Epic Games Store, including the Digital Deluxe Edition, which includes a digital art book and soundtrack, as well as the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Movie Pack (releasing December 12, 2024) and more.
