Still Wakes the Deep guide: How to survive against all monsters

Still Wakes the Deep, a psychological horror game from developer The Chinese Room, puts you in the shoes of Cameron “Caz” McLeary. As an electrical engineer assigned to the Beira D oil rig, Caz is “very good with the ‘lecky’” (electricity). Unfortunately, a dreary day of work turns into a nightmare, as drillers seem to have found something beneath the ocean. Soon, untold horrors begin appearing aboard the facility.

Our Still Wakes the Deep guide includes several tips to help you survive against the monsters that come your way. Please note that this guide does contain some minor spoilers, especially concerning the terrifying encounters in the campaign. However, we’ve avoided mentioning the names of the creatures themselves.

First things first: Context-sensitive actions

Still Wakes the Deep is a psychological horror game with no combat mechanics. You don’t actually fight any of the horrors you face. Instead, you have to rely primarily on stealth to get past them. There are also some chase sequences where you need to be quick and outrun your pursuer.

Outside of these terrifying and thrilling moments, the campaign involves the use of context-sensitive actions when interacting with various objects. Here are some examples:

  • When climbing ladders, shimmying across ledges, or moving across bars, tremors might occur. You must quickly press and hold the “Grab” button prompt to avoid falling down.
  • There are fire extinguishers that can be used to put out fires on the deck. However, these cannot be carried to other sections.
  • Some objects and mechanisms require you to press a button to hold them, followed by another key or the left thumbstick to move them toward a direction. These include ventilation ducts, movable containers, locked gates, winches/levers, and more.
  • Early in the campaign, you obtain a flashlight. Press the “F” key to illuminate your surroundings, since many areas in the game are dimly lit or pitch black.
  • During stealth sections, creatures will catch you if you’re out in the open. However, they won’t be able to reach you as long as you’re hiding underneath or inside structures (i.e. cargo containers, walkways, machinery, and more).

Engineering: Water Tanks

Early on in Still Wakes the Deep, you’ll be made aware that strange things are happening aboard the rig—but the first time you’ll catch a glimpse of a creature is in the Water Tanks room. Just gingerly make your way past the structures until you’re able to climb a ladder. As you drop down a hatch, the creature will appear, but Caz will end up falling just as it lunges for him.

Laundry Room

This stealth section in Still Wakes the Deep takes place on your second visit to the Laundry Room. The entity here patrols the room back and forth, and getting caught will lead to instant death. You must crouch under the washing machines and desks as you move closer to the exit. If possible, pick up a bottle and throw it to the opposite side of the room to distract the monster.

Deck

Once you return outside to the Deck, you’ll see a gargantuan monster lumbering around. The goal here is to remain crouched, hiding behind and inside cargo containers as you make your way around the area. The containers and ledges marked with yellow paint show you where you need to go.

At the very end, you need to get inside an enclosure so you can press the down button, which lowers the crew lift. Then, jump back outside and run as fast as you can to reach the lift.

Accommodation

This monster kickstarts the first chase sequence in Still Wakes the Deep. Simply sprint once prompted and look for passageways off to the side in case it bars your path forward.

Engineering: Pump Control and Generators

The creature here will hound you all throughout the Engineering Bay. As usual, you must stay crouched so you can stealthily arrive at your destination: the control room that powers up the generators.

Take note of crawlspaces at the sides, as well as items like bottles, cans, and small hammers that can be used as distractions. The “thing” here will tend to guard the control room once you’re close enough, so throw an item at the far corner to make it move to that location.

Engineering: Mud Handling

After restoring power to the generators, you must return to the Mud Handling room using the same passageways you took earlier. The key difference here is that there’s a short chase sequence between the Generator and Mud Handling section—a prompt will appear on-screen telling you to run.

If you survive, you'll have to distract the creepy horror again so you can enter the room with the Protective Relay.

Leg A

This part of Still Wakes the Deep consists primarily of platforming segments. There’s also a section where you have to swim up to reach openings as the water level rises. When you arrive at the next area, a pustulent growth that’s feeding on a dying oil rig worker will attempt to grab you. Repeatedly press the button prompt to get away from it.

Processing Quad

Once you’re back outside, it’s time for another stealth section where you must again avoid a Still Wakes the Deep monster. Technically this hostile has already spotted Caz, so the idea is to shimmy along the outer ledges of the Processing Quad. Upon reaching the other side—and assuming the mutated monster has moved farther away—you should be able to make a break for the Control Room.

Processing Quad: Walkway

This section of Still Wakes the Deep combines a chase sequence with a bit of platforming. Caz has to cross the walkway to relight the flare, but there’s an entity after him. Make a run for it and watch out for instances when you need to shimmy off to the side or jump across gaps.

When you reach the flare, press the button prompt to reignite it. After that, it’s time to sprint all the way back to the platform proper.

Accommodation: Vents

Things get even weirder on your next visit to Accommodation, especially given the numerous deceased workers that are slowly being devoured and corrupted here. Caz has to make his way around this area by crawling through ventilation shafts.

Later, one of the creatures will chase you inside a shaft. Be quick while moving and you should successfully escape its clutches.

Marine Control

The last chase sequence occurs as you’re making your way to the Marine Control Tower. The creature will chase Caz along several hallways. Some of these will collapse, and you’ll have to swim underwater to reach a safe area. There are also a few moments when you'll have to break free from an entity’s grasp.

Should you make it in one piece, you’ll survive the monster’s onslaught—and finish Still Wakes the Deep.
