Survive Replaced's bleak, brutal, endlessly beautiful dystopia with these four tips

Matt Cabral

Of course, progressing through this retro-futuristic thriller as protagonist Reach – a capable A.I. trapped in a human host – quickly reveals its nuclear-scarred setting is as brutal as it is beautiful. While attempting to decipher the fictional Phoenix City's sinister secrets and dismantle the corrupt corporation ruling the oppressive dystopia, you'll encounter plenty of enemies eager to bring your quest to a bloody conclusion.
Fully immersing yourself in Replaced's engrossing story and absorbing presentation – while also battling all manner of menaces anxious to reduce you to a pulpy puddle – can be challenging. But not to worry, as we've put together four key strategies that'll ensure you not only survive, but thrive in a world where human organs are more valuable than money…and seemingly everyone is after your precious innards.
Don't button-mash through early melees
Replaced eases you into its unforgiving world, allowing you to get comfortable with its bone-crunching combat before significantly ramping up the difficulty. As such, its early enemy encounters can generally be completed by spamming basic attacks. But you should avoid the temptation to simply button-mash your way through the campaign's initial chapters, lest you wind up unprepared when the game switches gears and begins brutally kicking your backside. While you're not required to hone your countering and dodging skills following their respective tutorials, you'll want to begin mastering these moves immediately. Replaced's combat follows a rhythmic cadence that'll be familiar to fans of the Batman Arkham franchise. But perfecting its flow against fodder foes is far less challenging than trying to learn the ropes among hardier threats.

The rewarding combat also evolves as you progress, mixing new, more complex abilities and moves into your arsenal. So, by the time you're introduced to the likes of the devastating Huxley pistol, shield-shattering pickaxe, and ground-shaking Shockwave attack, you'll want these more standard abilities to feel like second nature.
Master the Huxley hand-cannon
While Replaced's free-flowing fisticuffs will feel comfortably familiar to anyone who's cleaned up Gotham City's crime-riddled streets, Reach has access to one tool you'll never find on the Caped Crusader's utility belt. The Huxley pistol isn't your average pee shooter, but a more sophisticated weapon that effortlessly works alongside the fluid melee combat.
As such, you should get comfortable with it quickly to organically incorporate it into your corpse-piling repertoire. While the pistol benefits from upgrades unlocked as you progress, its standard functions support a satisfying gameplay loop that sees you using it as both a cranium-cracking baton and ranged death-dealer. With the former, you build energy by striking enemies, while the latter leverages that accumulated power to unleash a ranged, insta-kill slug.
Similar to your flowing flurry of basic attacks, counters, and dodges, you'll want to learn the Huxley's loop to seamlessly integrate it into your combat cadence. But once you master the art of striking up-close to fuel the pistol's firepower – right before blasting its payload into a baddie – you should experiment to find a strategy that fits your style.
If you want to begin a battle by thinning the low-level hordes, for example, you won't want to waste bullets on the biggest threats right away, but rather leverage these larger, slower enemies to replenish the pistol's ammo. While this tactic leaves the lumbering threats on the battlefield longer, it also allows you to eliminate the more numerous, evasive enemies with relative ease.
Accept the canine’s quest..and all other optional activities
About half way through Replaced's story, you'll meet Excalibur, a hungry pup hanging out in the world's hub-like Station. Following a simple quest that sees you tracking down a juicy burger for the starving dog, you're able to give him an affectionate pet.In most games, this interaction would represent a welcome touch of world-building immersion, but in Replaced bonding with the furry friend is just the beginning. Completing this optional activity grants you with a significant upgrade that allows your pickaxe to generate energy for the Huxley pistol. But this canine-given quest is just one example representative of nearly all optional activities. The Station is packed with similar, seemingly flavor-adding tasks that actually yield invaluable rewards that'll ultimately save your bacon on the battlefield.

You'll return to this evolving safe haven frequently and, while you'll likely be anxious to get back to the admittedly more compelling critical path, it's worth investing time to interact with every character – and animal – and accept their quests. While most are just simple errands, nearly all are worth your while, whether they result in a permanent health boost, more efficient med-stims, or a weapon upgrade you'll rely on deeper into this dystopian nightmare.
Take advantage of the detailed difficulty modes
On the surface, Replaced's trio of difficulty modes look like those you've seen in any number of games. But its "Easy," "Normal," and "Hard" options provide detailed descriptions that allow you to make a more informed decision better suited to your specific skill level and play style.
The game's least challenging mode, for example, decreases incoming damage, while pitting you against enemies with smaller health pools. Med-stim distribution is also more generous on “Easy.” Conversely, the most difficult mode is defined by significantly more incoming damage and enemies that can absorb some serious punishment.
In addition to this welcome inclusion supporting a more tailored experience, it can also be altered on the fly. So, if you're typically a player who prefers a "normal" or "medium" challenge, but are struggling with a specific encounter, you can sidestep the frustrating trial-and-error treadmill by temporarily swapping to the "Easy" setting.
It's also worth noting that Replaced's stunning visual presentation and engrossing storytelling make it an experience you might want to fully immerse yourself in without the potential distraction of being slaughtered by a boss who's unexpectedly revived because his body's been modded with a second heart.
