A world without people… Sound familiar?
The Uncertain Light At The End Environments
When in 2014 we invented the world of The Uncertain, we could not imagine that in 2020 the real world would – at least for a time – turn into something that looks painfully similar. Like everyone else, we have been looking in shock at the photos of empty streets of Moscow, New York and other major cities. For the last few years our artists have been looking for images to find good art references, and now we are unfortunately overwhelmed with research material. A feeling of deja vu haunted our team last month: in our two games, we have created a world that can now be seen through the window…

We weren’t prepared for that emotionally. It was a difficult and sudden change to make. Even if you can work at home, your day-to-day life in the office or studio consists of something more. Going to work is as much about conversations over coffee as it is about your equipment and desk. Walking around the streets of your hometown, going shopping, visiting the cinema – most of the usual ways to spend leisure time – became unavailable to us. And even though we love games with all our heart, it is impossible to fill all our free time with them. We missed friends and our families we could not see, we missed the places outside the house we couldn't visit.

The Uncertain Light At The End Engaging
So perhaps, during the quarantine, we began to understand our characters better. Loneliness, empty streets, and the need to continually hide to avoid danger. Being at home is exciting only for the first week; you feel at first like you’re in the middle of a historic moment. But after that positive surprise disappears, you find yourself trapped and concerned about the uncertainty of the future. Many of us felt overtaken by a feeling of anxiety, the discomfort of constant isolation, the existential fear of being lonely…

The Uncertain Light At The End Decoder
In 2016’s The Uncertain: Last Quiet Day and its 2020 sequel, Light at the End, we wanted to show the world from two different angles to understand both sides — robots and humans. The human way of thinking is familiar to us, but robots think differently. Sometimes we can consider their mentality illogical, stupid, limited and perhaps even funny. We want to ask players some questions: what do you think personality is? Can a robot, having reached a certain level of development, be considered a person? Can a robot have empathy or even love somebody?
The Uncertain Light At The End Hologram
One of the themes of the new game is about survival in the conditions of the "robopocalypse". There is no question of organizing any kind of "resistance": in The Uncertain there are about 300 human survivors for a city of a million people, and no more than one or two dozen robots who still remain loyal to humanity. The survivors are cut off from communications, and even the ability to move freely on the streets. It is hard to establish a connection between different survivors' groups, and there is no coordination center. In such circumstances, organized groups are small spontaneous associations of people who met by chance. Without resources to resist the robots, people focus on survival and live in fear.
The Uncertain Light At The End Robots
The Uncertain is a world where humanity has been completely replaced by the machines we created to make our lives better. The game is a work of fiction, but we hope it will make players look, think and pay attention to this part of the world around them.
