Top tips, tricks, and our guide to getting around in Hogwarts Legacy

Revelio! You’ll be hearing that a lot in Hogwarts Legacy, out now on the Epic Games Store. The spell reveals the hidden secrets of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and is probably the most used piece of magic in the early hours of the game.
The action-adventure game recreates the Hogwarts of over a century ago. The character experiences the school for the first time, joining as a fifth-year student to help them understand their connection to the rare and ancient form of magic, so it might be tempting to run around the corridors screaming “Revelio” every five seconds. But there’s a quieter way of uncovering the charming world’s secrets.
We’ve been playing the game, hunting down the hidden areas of Hogwarts. Below is a small guide with some early game tips to get you started in your quest, as well as some fun discoveries that we’ve made along the way. Where possible, we’ve also mentioned the Floo Flame positions, which you can use to fast-travel to any location in and around the school. You’ll unlock those just by walking past them, so it’s worth wandering the corridors just to take everything in. A lot of these locations will have a Field Guide note to uncover, the magical book given to you to advance your studies, so they’re worth visiting.
It’s time to go to school… Revelio!
Arithmancy Doors
You’ll find these doors dotted around Hogwarts. They’re puzzles to be solved, but they’re impossible to unlock until you discover the key. Here’s how to work out what’s behind their intriguing charms.

Hop out of the Floo Flame at the Divination Class in the Library Annex, which delivers you to a doorway in the rafters. Walk through, and you’ll find the Divination Class door on the right, which is also one of the puzzles. Casting Revelio will show you the Arithmancy challenge. The correct combination of the numbers and animal runes will unlock the door. Near each door is a revolving lock that you can turn to the correct creature to complete the challenge.
You don’t need to memorize this, though. A box near the blackboard includes the cheat sheet that displays all the animals and their corresponding numbers. The sheet is deposited into the Field Guide’s Quest Items Section. You’ll never be stuck on those puzzles again, and behind each door is plenty of loot, which is a real boost in your first few hours.
Lumos Paintings
You’ll enter Hogwarts already knowing the Lumos spell, which lets you light the tip of your wand and use it as a torch. The spell also casts light on another Hogwarts mystery.

There are portraits hanging on Hogwarts walls that are as black as Argus Filch’s heart. These ovals are little puzzles for you to solve. To begin with, casting Lumos on the painting will reveal the artwork, which will be an area of Hogwarts not too far from the painting itself.
Once you’ve found the corresponding area, A blast of Revelio will uncover a secret moth somewhere nearby. Use Lumos again to guide the moth back to the painting, where it will settle and complete the artwork. It’ll restore the art and give you a little bit of XP.
Ticklish Pear Portal
The nearest Floo Flame to this is the Grand Staircase. If you follow the corridors and stairs downwards again, you’ll spot a leaf spiral staircase. It’s heading in the direction of the Hufflepuff Common Room, but unless you’re a Hufflepuff, you won’t get in there. However, you’ll pass by a still-life painting of some fruit. One of the pears in that picture is ticklish, and should you tickle it for long enough, it’ll turn into a doorknob.

The painting swings open to reveal the Hogwarts Kitchens! A rarely seen section of the castle’s lower levels, where house elves toil away for every meal before magically teleporting it all to the Great Hall.

In this room is the remarkable sight of the elves’ living quarters, a pile of barrels that they’ve renovated into tiny homes.
The Chamber of Secrets
You sadly don’t get to visit the vast warren of reptilian fury that later students will uncover. But the opening is still there if you know where to look.

The nearest Floo Flame is the Lower Grand Staircase. This will drop you at the top of some stairs. If you run down and to the right and follow the corridors, you’ll eventually reach a corridor with some bathrooms. The pre-Moaning Myrtle bathroom is on the right of this corridor. Now, the Chamber can’t be unlocked, but there’s a little snake carved into one of the faucets.

It can be tough to spot, so we’ve zoomed in.
Toilet Cake
Ew. EWW! You’d expect the Gryffindor toilets to be a high-traffic area, given how often the students in that house are in peril. That’s why this discovery baffles us. In the South Wing, on the lower levels, are two bathrooms. One is shut because Peeves the Poltergeist loves to prank people in it. In fact, the first time you get there, he’ll be singing a song around a soaking-wet student… yeah.

The other bathroom is open, and all the stalls can be opened. The second-to-last stall contains what can only be described as a toilet cake—someone has been sitting in the loo, munching down on a cake.

It’s also the only toilet without a flush. Also, in the bathroom is a mirror that comments on your appearance, but after encountering the toilet cake, you might wish to avoid that.
Polyjuice Potion
A lot of these are toilet-based. In the Astronomy Wing, one flight of stairs down from the Charms Classroom’s Floo exit is another Hogwarts bog.

Within the last stall of this toilet is a bubbling cauldron of green goop, surrounded by herbs and a few pages torn out of some mighty magical tomes. It’s clearly a reference to the Polyjuice Potion cooked up by Hermione in The Chamber of Secrets, though this time in a different area of the castle. Can you imagine if the teachers of Hogwarts took their lessons in illicit toilet stalls instead of the boring classrooms they preside over? Not one student would fail their N.E.W.T.s.
House Points Hourglasses
As the school year progresses, each student has the ability to score points for their houses. Points are tracked by large hourglasses found near the entrance to Great Hall, each representing a house.

Rubies for Gryffindor, diamonds for Hufflepuff, sapphires for Ravenclaw, and emeralds for Slytherin. The house with the most points at the end of the year wins the House Cup. At least until Dumbledore comes along and adds so many points to Gryffindor that there really should be some sort of inquiry into the whole process.
Trophy Room
A few neat Easter eggs lie within the Trophy Room. You’ll find the room’s Floo Flame in the Grand Staircase. Arriving near the room, you’re surrounded by a number of impressive acquisitions that Hogwarts faculty and students have acquired over the years. The Goblet of Fire Casket is in here. The goblet that chooses the students for the Triwizard Tournament is in the trophy room. It’s quite an imposing tower of ancient metalwork, but sadly it does not select the player. We’re glad of that. We don’t do well with labyrinths.

The answer to the question that no one has ever asked: How big would a troll’s armor be? You can find out in the hallway around the Trophy Room, which includes the imposing specimen.

Trolls infamously don’t require armor because they’re gentle creatures who avoid fights at all costs
Frog Statue
Travel to the Faculty Floo Flame in the South Wing. Start running and take the left staircase downwards. At the bottom of the curved stairs is this Frog Statue with a prompt.

When you use it, it’ll swallow you whole and spit you out into an otherwise inaccessible room. It’s something of a wand crafting area (that you can’t use), with wands on the walls, wands on the ceilings, and bundles of wood all around.

You can leave via the Frog Statue or open the door and drop back down at the bottom of a staircase not far from where you entered.
Frog Choir
Leave them on a song; that’s what they say. This room has a number of entrances. The simplest solution we’ve found is to travel to Bell Tower Courtyard Flame. From there, just follow the right staircase up. You’ll end up in a corridor that leads you to the music class and a small gathering of frogs who’ll sing for you when you use them. A magical moment brought to life in ear-splitting detail, though the game claims they’re better singers than most of the students.

There’s more. So much more, but that’s for you to find out on your own. Each of the Common Rooms can be explored, but only if you’re a student of the correct house; otherwise, you’re locked out. The grounds and surrounding areas are packed. Visit the Forbidden Forest, Hogsmeade, and lots more wonders of the Wizarding World.
