Windrose ship guide: How to repair a shipwreck and assemble a crew

Finding and repairing a ship requires a ton of resources that you can only obtain from specific spots on the starting islands, and you'll have to craft enough gear to clear hostile pirate camps and rescue your crewmates on top of that. Our Windrose guide will walk through how you can repair a ship and find a crew as fast as possible so you can set sail on the open sea.
Setting up camp
Even though Windrose is a pirate game at its core, you're still going to need a base of operations on land. The first tutorial quest, "How My Shore Adventure Began," will walk you through the basics of camp building and resource gathering.
Your first priority should be setting up a Bonfire, a Workbench, and a Cooking Fire. Once you've established a basic framework for your pirate hideout, head inland and take out some dodos and boars for cooking ingredients. Boars are deadly at this stage of the game, so keep your guard up!
Once you've hunted a few boars, you'll have enough Rough Hide to build an Armor and Clothing Workshop. Keep hunting until you've gotten enough resources to craft a full set of clothes.
With your new outfit, head further inland until you reach a cave guarded by a group of boars. There's a huge Copper deposit inside that cave, and you can harvest it with a Stone Pickaxe crafted at a basic Workbench.
Copper can't be used until it's smelted into bars, so you'll need to add a Smelting Furnace and Charcoal Kiln to your base. Crafting a Charcoal Kiln requires Clay, which can be found along the coastline of the island. Look where the grassy jungle meets the sandy beach and you'll spot some shallow Clay deposits that you can harvest with your pickaxe.
After collecting some Clay, build a Smelting Furnace and Charcoal Kiln so you can start refining Copper. Charcoal is crafted with Wood, so chop some extra logs while you wait for the smelting process to finish. It's also a good idea to get back out there and hunt for more Rough Hide to upgrade your clothing while you wait.
With your first Copper Ingots, you should build a Weaponsmith Workshop. This will let you craft and upgrade melee weapons, significantly increasing your damage output. Before moving on to the next quest, go and mine as much Copper as you can so your Smelting Furnace can keep running while you're out adventuring.
I need a bigger boat
The next quest on your list is "I Need a Bigger Boat," which sends you after various shipwrecks dotted across the archipelago.
Sailing between islands takes quite a long time, so craft a Fast Travel Bell before leaving. It costs a sizable chunk of Copper, but it's worth having. With it, you can build a Fast Travel Point on any shoreline as long as you have some wood in your inventory.
To repair the shipwreck and get her seaworthy again, you need to collect 100 Wood, 20 Nails, 20 Coarse Fabric, and 10 Ropes. There are plenty of trees around, and you can craft Coarse Fabric and Ropes with basic Plant Fiber.
Nails are the hard part. You can craft Nails with Copper at a Workbench, but it's probably better to save your Copper for equipment upgrades. You can gather Nails by destroying small shipwrecks along the coastline with a pickaxe if you'd rather save your precious materials.
Since it can take a while to gather the necessary materials to repair the ship, it's a good idea to set up a small camp near the shipwreck so you can craft supplies and cook food. Don't forget to place that Fast Travel Point!
Rescuing the crew
You can't sail a ship without a crew, so you need to rescue some trapped sailors from nearby pirates before you can use your vessel.The sailors will be marked on your map, and they'll all be in the same general vicinity. The hard part is defeating the pirates holding them captive.
Before you try to rescue your crewmates, explore the starting islands and fully clear out the points of interest on your map to earn XP. Taking them on at level one isn't recommended.
As you level up, put points into the stats tied to your favorite weapons. Weapons scale with different stats, so those skill points can seriously make a difference in your damage output. For example, sabers benefit from Agility while muskets benefit from Precision. A few points to boost your health and stamina won't hurt, either.
You should also make sure you've upgraded your clothing and weapons a few times with the Copper Ingots you've been smelting. If you've cleared out the Copper deposit on the starting island, you can find more caves throughout the archipelago.
Finally, food is an often overlooked part of battle preparations in Windrose. You can have two active meal effects at a time, and even the simplest of snacks will boost your maximum HP so you can take more hits during combat.
Higher-quality meals will grant huge stat buffs, so read the descriptions carefully to see what meal plan works best for you. Coconut Milk With Bananas will get you five bonus Endurance points, for example, while Spicy Skewered Crab comes with a bonus to Strength. You'll need an upgraded Cooking Fire to make better meals, so craft a Cutting Table with some Copper and Wood to unlock more recipes.
Once you're adequately prepared, start raiding the pirate camps and liberating your crewmates. Try to land a few ranged shots to even the odds before engaging, and play defensively so you don't run out of stamina during combat. Each campsite has some supply caches and chests to loot, so don't forget to look around after freeing the sailors!
Upgrading Your Ship
Once you've repaired the ship and found a crew, it's time to set sail. Before you head out, however, you should equip your vessel with Cannons, Hull Bracing, and other add-ons.
You need a Wharf at your base to do any ship management. Build one near the coast and you'll be able to manage your ship's inventory and equipment.
You can craft things for your ship at a Shipwright's Workshop. Place one anywhere in your camp and craft a set of 12-Pounders, some Hull Bracing, and Boarding Party Gear. This stuff costs a lot of Copper and Rough Hide, but it'll make a huge difference out on the open ocean.
It's also highly recommended to upgrade your 12-Pounders and Hull Bracing at least once or twice before you try to engage other ships in naval combat. If you've already equipped them on your ship, you'll have to put them back in your personal inventory to upgrade them at a Shipwright's Workshop.
With that, you're ready to sail south to the island of Tortuga. There, you'll find various faction vendors that'll sell you new ship designs and crafting blueprints for even better gear. Increasing your reputation with each faction by turning in trophies from sunken ships will let you access even better rewards.
That's the main loop of Windrose! Now that you've found your sea legs and established yourself as a novice pirate, you can plunder to your heart's content and carve out a space for your crew in the Caribbean.
