Five months after launch, Infinity Nikki is set to receive its largest update yet. In Infinity Nikki Version 1.5, Nikki meets a mysterious stranger who reveals truths about Nikki's past, present, and future. During her journey, Nikki encounters different versions of herself from various worlds, all heading toward a mysterious place called the Sea of Stars.

Infinity Nikki developer Infold Games describes the Sea of Stars as the “place where everything began,” though what that means exactly is a mystery. Stylists will investigate this Sea of Stars, in addition to other new areas like Serenity Island, the Dream Star Isles, and more starting in Version 1.5, where they will also learn about Nikki’s sudden appearance in Miraland and what it means for our heroine.

It's a massive update for a massive success of a game—but the Nikki series didn’t succeed overnight. After four games starring our pink-haired heroine, Infinity Nikki is developer Infold's first multi-platform success. To celebrate the upcoming update, I spoke with the team at Infold about the inspirations behind their first open world outing and what to expect from Infinity Nikki Version 1.5.

Creating Infinity Nikki

While I’ve covered Infinity Nikki since this first preview back in 2024 and written multiple guides to help players, this is my first time sitting down to speak with developers since the game’s success.

Infinity Nikki is not only Infold’s first open world game, but also its first multi-platform game, connecting players on PC, consoles, and phones. Liam Sang, a member of the Infinity Nikki design team, attributes the Nikki series’s expansion to Infold’s commitment to “reinventing fashion gaming.”

Infinity Nikki isn't just a sequel. It's a manifesto for fashion as a transformative force,” says Sang. Sang highlights two pillars that represent Infold’s vision: “fashion as an emotional compass” and “a symphony of creativity.”

In Infinity Nikki, Stylists draw on their own experiences to create sketches for clothing. Characters base designs off of precious memories, beautiful sights, and more. In that sense, Infinity Nikki isn’t just about dress-up, but about fashion-as-inspiration.

“Players don't just dress Nikki—they embark on journeys where a flower's petal inspires a gown, where sunlit meadows become runways, and where every snapshot shared becomes a story told,” says Sang. “Fashion here isn't static. It's the language of discovery.”

As for “a symphony of creativity,” Sang says: “After four genre-defining titles, we asked 'What if clothing isn't just worn, but lived in?' By weaving platforming, environmental puzzles, and outfit-crafting into a seamless tapestry, we've created a universe where creativity fuels exploration—and vice versa.”

The idea for Infinity Nikki emerged during the pandemic—what the Infinity Nikki IP Team’s Clara Wang called a “time of uncertainty.” As Wang put it, “For years, players have longed for a more immersive and more free experience, and Infinity Nikki directly responds to that demand.” The pandemic was an opportunity to explore how to meet those demands and evolve beyond what the Nikki series already covered.

“The development team envisioned Infinity Nikki as a journey of reconciliation—both with oneself and with the world,” says Wang. “By reducing the emphasis on combat in the game, Infinity Nikki focuses instead on elegant styling and stunning environmental details, encouraging players to find peace and beauty through exploration.”

Wang mentions that Infinity Nikki owes some of its success to the Nintendo-style platforming mechanics and open-world exploration found in games like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. The development team, including former Nintendo Director Kentaro Tominaga, integrated these influences to create a relaxed experience that wasn't combat-centric. A sanctuary, of sorts.

“We believe that maintaining the relaxed atmosphere and core experience of the game is crucial. Any idea that might go against this will have to be carefully considered," says Wang. "Our goal is to ensure that players feel happy and content as they explore the world, rather than tense or stressed.“

Expanding Nikki’s world

Even though the Heartcraft Kingdom has multiple distinct regions, it’s just one of Miraland’s seven nations and the Wishfield region is an even smaller section of that. Nikki started off in Wishfield’s welcoming town of Florawish, journeying all the way to the whimsical Wishing Woods across Infinity Nikki's first few updates.

Jude Li, a member of the Infinity Nikki Character Team, sees it as just the beginning of a journey to “weave a tapestry of culturally rich, artistically distinct realms across the game's ever-expanding world.”

“In future updates, players will traverse landscapes inspired by diverse global aesthetics, each meticulously crafted to reflect unique narratives—from ancient mythologies to avant-garde fantasies,” says Li. Upcoming designs include “elegant and cozy robes, dashing prince-inspired outfits, beautiful ink-wash Linlang designs, and futuristic fashion-forward pieces.”

While developers didn’t name-drop any particular cultural inspirations, Li noted that their fashion philosophy was “deeply rooted in real-world trends.” Linlang designs, for example, seem to take inspiration from traditional Chinese clothing. To me, the Timeless Melody outfit looks like something that would come out of a Swan Lake-like fairytale (or maybe a dollhouse).

That said, fashion takes inspiration from multiple sources, and Infinity Nikki is no different. Each piece is a unique item rather than a copy. “We've reimagined [each piece of clothing] to suit the fantasy world of Infinity Nikki, allowing players to experience a mix of familiar cultural elements and creative new twists,” says Li. “This way, the fashion feels both relatable and otherworldly, adding to the sense of wonder as you explore.”

“Diversity is at the core of our creative vision,” Li adds. “The clothing in Infinity Nikki serves as a vibrant fusion of cultural motifs and avant-garde aesthetics. Players may discover designs that reflect the intricate craftsmanship of traditional attire from various regions, alongside bold, runway-inspired couture that pushes boundaries.”

Making friends with fashion

Infinity Nikki already includes social features like Snapshot Hourglasses, which let players capture their look and then leave these photos in the world for others to look at—but fans want to do more than just look. Infinity Nikki Version 1.5 adds co-op multiplayer to the game for the first time, though only in certain areas for now. A new location called the Dream Star Isles features “Starlight Projections” of other players that Stylists can interact with.

“By ringing the Starbell—a magical item that illuminates your location—nearby players can follow its chime to meet up. Friends can even teleport instantly to each other’s side, forging bonds through the power of Whim,” says Nina Zhou from the Infinity Nikki Operation Management Team. “Once linked, two Nikkis can explore hand-in-hand, syncing movements like jumping, gliding, or floating across Miraland's skies.”

“While seamless cross-platform play remains a priority, initial matchmaking may have regional limitations to ensure stability,” Zhou adds.

Zhou says integrating these new social features into the Sea of Stars was the toughest part of developing Version 1.5. “Crafting a visually stunning, narrative-rich area that seamlessly integrates multiplayer functionality was no small feat, requiring intricate work on visuals, story, and technical systems,” says Zhou. “We recognize that this new feature still has areas to refine and genuinely welcome player feedback to help us improve it.”

Even with Infold’s hard work, co-op hasn’t reached its fullest potential yet. Similar to the Whimcycles in the Breezy Meadow, only select areas in Version 1.5 allow co-op between players—but it’s a start.

“Currently, co-op is focused on the Sea of Stars and select Miraland zones, with plans to expand based on player feedback,” says Zhou. “We see Version 1.5 as a shared canvas, where player feedback will guide us in refining and expanding this feature. By listening closely and adapting swiftly, we're committed to co-creating meaningful innovations alongside our community and hope we can expand the ways players interact with each other in future updates."

Home is where the heart is

Even though Infinity Nikki has three vast regions to explore already, fans are eager for more. Aside from new regions, many are looking forward to expanding their world and customization features—especially the much-anticipated housing (and home decoration) feature.

While it won’t be arriving in the upcoming update, Infold did say that homes are set to arrive this summer, enabling players to build a dream home and grow crops. They hope to seamlessly integrate it into the open-world experience.

“If you need inspiration, we'll offer basic house templates that you can tweak or totally redesign, giving you plenty of room to create your perfect space,” says Zhou. “As for furniture crafting and decor, we’re focused on giving players plenty of creative freedom, with more details to come closer to launch.”

Zhou hints that, while some decor will be event-exclusive, Stylists will have access to multiple ways to furnish and decorate their new home. “We’re also committed to ensuring a fair and accessible experience, so while we may introduce special decor through events, our goal is to make your home-building journey rewarding and inclusive for all Stylists.”
