Crimson Desert, the open-world adventure game from South Korea-based studio Pearl Abyss, has sold over five million copies since it launched in March. This milestone would not be possible without the efforts of its development team, which has worked tirelessly since launch to release one massive update after another in near-record time.

We took a look at some of the biggest changes to Crimson Desert since release, including major improvements and new additions such as legendary mounts, tameable pets, dozens of fast travel points, tweaks to character skills, and more.

Bosses and game difficulty

I played Crimson Desert and beat the campaign before its official launch, and several bosses were downright punishing. I got used to “brute-forcing” encounters by eating countless food items like soup and grilled meat just to survive. However, since Crimson Desert released, certain boss fights have had their difficulty lowered, making encounters more approachable to players of all skill levels.

A recent update has also added Easy, Normal, and Hard difficulty options, which allow players to alter enemy health, aggression, and speed. On Hard mode, certain bosses even gain new attack patterns.

Exploration improvements: Fast travel points, gliding, world map, and more

One of the biggest Crimson Desert updates happened on launch day. Up to that point, there were very few Abyss Nexus fast travel points. There weren't any teleporters in cities, nor even in the Greymane Camp itself. In fact, the closest teleporter to the Greymane Camp was hidden by default and it required a key item from a side quest chain.

Then, come launch day (and over subsequent patches), we’ve seen numerous improvements to navigation and exploration. These certainly make your treks across Pywel more enjoyable:
  • Cities, major settlements, and the Greymane Camp have Abyss Nexus fast travel points now.
  • Many Abyss Nexus teleporters have been added all over the countryside.
  • You can now fast travel while mounted, falling, swimming, or climbing walls.
  • The stamina cost when flying/gliding has been decreased.
  • Mineral deposits are automatically marked on the world map when you’re near them.
  • Unlocked treasure chests and Visione Memory Fragments are marked as well.
  • Hidden caves that you’ve discovered also have a check mark to denote that you’ve looted everything within.
  • Map filters let you check for specific landmarks and points-of-interest.

Player inventory and storage

There are a plethora of items in Crimson Desert, ranging from weapons, armors, Abyss Gears, and Abyss Artifacts to food, ingredients, crafting materials, furniture, and more. But before the game released, players had significantly fewer inventory slots and no means of storing items.

That’s no longer the case at present, as several Crimson Desert updates have vastly improved inventory management:
  • Players start with 50 inventory slots. Additional bags with a single slot can be purchased from vendors, while larger bags with up to 10 slots can be obtained by completing important portions of the campaign.
  • New inventory tabs allow you to view items that belong to specific categories, such as documents, food, and materials.
  • The storage chest found in the player’s tent in the Greymane Camp can have up to 1,000 slots depending on the camp’s expansion level.

Player housing chests

Speaking of inventory management, a patch has added new types of chests and wardrobes that can be placed inside the player’s house:
  • Sturdy Gatherables Chest: This has 1,000 slots and can be purchased from furniture shops. You can store crafting and refinement materials, which can be used even if they’re not in your inventory.
  • Wardrobe: You can also buy these from furniture shops, such as the one southwest of Delesyia City. Each Wardrobe has 100 slots, and you can place more in your home to reach a maximum of 1,000 slots.s
  • Collectibles Chest: This comes from a Hernand Request called “A Friendly Encounter.” It has 1,000 slots for crafting recipes and quest items.
  • Kuku Cooler: This is a reward from the “Invention of the Workshop” Hernand Request. It has 40 slots for food and ingredients. You may also craft the Enhanced Kuku Cooler, which has 330 slotss
Moreover, it’s possible to alter the type of house you inhabit. Options include the Standard House, Compact House, Spacious House, and Spacious Pailunese House once you move the Greymane Camp to Pailune.

The Greymane Camp in Pailune

Moving the Greymane Camp from Howling Hill to Pailune takes a lot of effort. After updates, however, the placements of supporting characters and vendors tend to be more convenient. The farm and ranch areas in Pailune have also been expanded.

Overall, the location should be easier to navigate once you get used to the layout. If you need more help with recruits and expansion upgrades, you can read our Greymane Camp guide.

New mounts

Originally, the only legendary mounts in Crimson Desert were the three horses: Rokade, Royler, and Camora. Since then, five legendary and boss mounts have been added to the game:
  • Snow White Deer: Found near the Sanctum of Solace in Pailune.
  • White Bear: Found west of the Five Finger Mountain Valley Ancient Ruins puzzle.
  • Icicle Edge Alpine Ibex: Requires the completion of several side quests in Pailune, which grants access to missions from the Longleaf Tribe. Later, you must defeat a boss named Moren the Mistwood Huntmaster.
  • Silver Fang: Requires the completion of several side quests in Hernand, which lets you battle a legendary beast called Black Fang. Then, go to Silver Fang’s lair in Howling Hollow.
  • Rock Tusk Warthog: Defeat Ravok of the Savage Fangs, who guards the Bordig Camp in the Crimson Desert region.

New pets

You can tame more pets in Crimson Desert thanks to yet another update:
  • Birds: You receive the Sotdae of Bond upon completing the Pororin Forest Guardians “Trembling Woods” requirement. This object can be placed on the ground and you may subsequently add different types of food to the bird feeder. Birds like jays, orioles, condors, eagles, and others will gain trust as they eat the food you leave for them.
  • The Abyss Heuklang creature can be found in front of the Axiom Archive in the Abyss. You should be able to tame it immediately.
  • Five new types of cats have been added—and we all know that cats are awesome.

Improvements to Damiane’s and Oongka’s skills

Although Kliff is the main character in Crimson Desert, you can still unlock two playable characters—Damiane and Oongka—as you progress through the campaign. Certain tweaks have made their abilities more viable for open-world exploration. For instance, Damiane’s Shield Toss and Oongka’s Scatter Shot now have the same effect as Kliff’s Force Palm. Likewise, Damiane and Oongka have gained access to skills like Nature’s Snare and Axiom Force. These abilities are used not only in combat, but also to solve various puzzles.

More changes (and what’s to come)

Crimson Desert has certainly undergone a lot of changes since it launched in March. Here are some additional noteworthy improvements:
  • Lights shine brightly on key objects that are required for puzzles, making solutions more intuitive.
  • Players are encouraged early on to visit a Witch to learn about Abyss Gears and socketing.
  • Many tooltips and tutorials have been corrected.
  • Controls are smoother and more responsive.
  • Refinement Tokens can be used to temper equipment up to Level 4 without using up other materials.
  • New weapons and armors have been added, including the Baltheon Armor for Kliff and the Sword of Starlight for Damiane.
  • There's now a Photo Mode with field-of-view adjustments.
  • Weapon display toggles now provide options for those who don’t want their armaments visible on their character’s back all the time.
  • You only need to “watch and learn” certain maneuvers from enemies if you wish to unlock a particular skill.
  • Countless bug fixes, including missable skills and progression-blocking issues.
And there's more to come. Pearl Abyss has previously announced features that are sure to keep you playing Crimson Desert. We’ve yet to see “boss rematches,” which will allow adventurers to face vanquished foes. There's also a “re-blockading” feature on the way, which will let enemy forces reclaim their bases and camps so you can clear them out once more.

Those who want to explore the massive world of Pywel should pick up Crimson Desert, which is available now on the Epic Games Store.
