The warped, claustrophobic POV of Metro’s new protagonist, "Stranger," helped kick off Gamescom’s Opening Night Live. A new trailer for the post-apocalyptic FPS delved into the network of Moscow’s subways and stations that humanity now calls home as Stranger attempts to infiltrate the underground world.

The previous factions that ruled the tunnels are gone, and the survivors are now under the control of Novoreich, a fascist faction broadcasting threats and spreading across the settlements "like a plague". The group’s leader, a former Spartan called Hunter, delivers threats across the airwaves, demanding that "the enemy must be destroyed". We see glimpses of propaganda posters and huddled, terrified citizens.

However, we also see Stranger stalking Novoreich soldiers. The POV violence is intense as Stranger takes them down in brutal melee combat in the dark or stealthily snipes them from behind. Metro’s trademark weapons—hand-crafted from discarded blueprints and scavenged parts—allow players to combine handguns into hefty rifles and customize grips, stocks, and attachments.

Set four years after Metro Exodus, the world of Metro remains a grim place. The opening shot of a broken, diseased train feels like it should come with a health warning. From Sevastopolskaya station to the deadly, irradiated surface of Moscow, the world is still filled with rust, radiation, and monsters. As Dmitry Glukhovsky, author of the original books, stated: “This Metro game will be darker than anything you’ve seen before”
