Every year, a steady stream of games gets released, competing for your attention like side quests in an RPG—and inevitably, some great games get overlooked. Whether it’s an indie game or a AAA title, underrated and obscure video games are hidden gems full of entertainment just waiting to be discovered. 

With that in mind, we’ve put together a list of some of the best underrated and obscure PC games available on the Epic Games Store. 
 

Magical Bakery

Take a baking store management sim and throw in a tinge of Harry Potter, and you’ll get what developer SUPERLUMEN's Magical Bakery is all about. Like many management sims, you run the day-to-day business, making recipes and keeping your customers happy. The twist here is that every baked good is magical, and the customers are fantastical creatures like ogres and dragon people. 

Since its late 2024 release, Magical Bakery made its mark organically, as players spread the word about its cozy gameplay and whimsical tone. 
 

Bear and Breakfast

Developer Gummy Cat’s Bear and Breakfast is an underrated cozy sim that became an indie darling after its release in 2022. You take on the role of Hank, a bear who is more interested in running a bed and breakfast than he is in salmon hunting or picnic basket raiding. Hank and a group of his animal friends build a B&B to serve human guests. Along the way, he customizes his inn, completes quests, keeps his customers happy, and uncovers a mysterious plot. 

Bear and Breakfast’s adorable atmosphere and casual pace make it a great (if undervalued) game. If you enjoy cozy games with a cheerful vibe, give it a try.  
 

Tchia

Developed by Awaceb, Tchia takes players on an open-world sandbox adventure where you explore tropical islands, take control of animals and objects, and play your ukulele. 

On a quest to rescue her father, Tchia controls creatures like birds, crabs, fish—more than 30 animals in all, and hundreds of objects. Tchia is a great choice if you’re looking to travel around the tropics, taking to the land, sea, and sky as you explore a world inspired by New Caledonia, a tiny island in the Pacific Ocean. 
 

Bugsnax

Developer Young Horses’ Bugsnax centers on the titular creatures, which are half bugs and half incredibly delicious snacks. 

The game takes place on Snaktooth Island. You, the Journalist, arrive at the invitation of famed explorer Elizabert Megafig—but when you reach your destination, you discover that Megafig and her followers are gone and scattered across the island. It’s your job to find them. 

Along the way, you’ll need to capture and feed more than 100 species of Bugsnax to the Grumps that inhabit Snaktooth Island. One of Bugsnax's best parts is that Grumps take on the form of the Bugsnax they consume. Imagine a puppet with hot dog legs and strawberry arms—you can make that a reality in Bugsnax, as your adventure reunites the inhabitants of Snaxburg. 
 

Cookie Cutter

A hand-drawn Metroidvania with liberal doses of grit, Cookie Cutter is one the most underrated games of the last few years. 

Cookie Cutter distinguishes itself with a world of amazingly detailed, cel-shaded art, which makes every moment feel like you’re playing a hyper-violent cartoon. You take on the role of Cherry, an android with a human soul who beats down enemies using chainsaws, motorcycles, and other eclectic weapons. It offers much of what you’d expect from the genre—i.e. a ton of exploration and secrets—but its visuals, punk rock aesthetic, and mature-themed bloody action set Cookie Cutter apart. 
 

Terror of Hemasaurus 

An inspired retro experience, Terror of Hemasauraus deserves more love. 

Developer Loren Lemcke’s game pays homage to the classic Rampage arcade game. Up to four players take on the role of giant monsters—Hemasaurus, Clocksloth, Salamandrah, and Autonomous Hemasaurus—who kick, punch, and bathe cities in fire around the globe in 8-bit style. 

The premise and gameplay in Terror of Hemasaurus are simple and straightforward—destroy everything and eat people to save the world from climate catastrophe—but it can lead to hours of explosive fun.
 

Cursed to Golf

Cursed to Golf is one of the most underrated sports arcade games ever made. In this retro-style indie title, you literally have to golf for your life to escape Golf Purgatory. You’ll take on a number of challenging, procedurally generated courses full of obstacles like water traps and spike pits, and you’ll compete against supernatural bosses. Along the way, you’ll also get Ace Cards that add twists, like allowing you to split your ball into three or freeze water traps.

With a ton of replayability thanks to its random courses and a sprinkling of roguelike elements, Cursed to Golf is a great and often overlooked game. 
 

Tinykin

The adorable protagonist of developer Splashteam’s Tinykin may be small in scale, but this underrated indie gem is full of big fun. 

You play as Milodane (or just "Milo"), an intergalactic archaeologist who investigates a mysterious planet only to discover that nobody’s around, he’s tiny (like bug-sized tiny), and the planet is…actually Earth, circa 1991. On his quest to return home and grow back to his normal size, Milo collects hundreds of the titular Tinykin creatures. He uses their powers to solve environmental puzzles, reach new locations, and explore, directing Tinykin to build bridges and ladders, charge electrical cables, blow up obstacles, and more. 

Tinykin’s cute, cartoony art style and casually paced gameplay make it an underrated singleplayer PC game worth checking out.
 

Slay the Princess

Visual novel adventure games don’t tend to be bestsellers, but the small indie team at Black Tabby Games made something special with Slay the Princess. 

The horror title turns the damsel in distress trope on its head as players unravel a cryptic mystery surrounding their morbid goal, which is not-at-all-hidden in the game’s name. Slay the Princess players make narrative choices that create a truly captivating branching story, elevated by its voice cast and hand-drawn artwork.

Slay the Princess’s impeccable blend of story and art takes it from an underrated to a modern indie classic—and its multiple endings will give you a great excuse to play through again and again.
 

Rhythm Sprout

Developer SURT’s Rhythm Sprout mixes classic rhythm game mechanics—hit the notes on-time—with a narrative journey that sees Sprout the Chosen Onion face off against a slew of Sweet Villains, peppered with Easter eggs to find along the way. 

Rhythm Sprout boasts an impressive soundtrack filled with catchy, original music inspired by a variety of genres, from disco to EDM, K-POP, lo-fi hip-hop, and metal. It’s an underrated game that puts a narrative twist on a fairly obscure genre.  
 

Eastward

Role-playing games are a popular genre for indie developers, but great titles like Eastward sometimes get lost in the pack. Eastward’s tone and visual style are reminiscent of classic 16-bit RPGs like Secret of Mana and The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. 

Players take on the role of two friends, John and Sam, each of whom has a certain set of skills—which makes switching between them during combat and puzzle-solving an interesting mechanic. Eastward also features a robust narrative about a collapsing world, brought to life by the inhabitants of the game’s many towns. If you’re looking for a solid RPG adventure with some serious cooking mechanics, give Eastward a try.
 

Norco

Taking a cue from the classic point-and-click adventures of the '80s and '90s, developer Geography of Robots’ Norco may be an obscure indie game, but it’s also a truly captivating one. 

Players take on the role of Kay, a young woman from Norco, Louisiana who’s investigating the disappearance of her brother and the death of her mother. As the plot unfolds, the mystery behind Kay’s mother’s death reveals a much deeper conspiracy. Norco’s Mind Map mechanic helps players keep track of everything they’ve learned and put clues together, its visuals are a modern upgrade on highly detailed and stylized pixel art, and it’s underpinned by an enthralling cyberpunk synthwave soundtrack—all of which makes Norco a great choice if you’re seeking out an underrated gem. 
 

Celeste

Retro 2D platformers are an indie developer mainstay, even if some end up in the obscure games category. Maddy Makes Games’ Celeste fits the mold, and it built a reputation on its extremely challenging platforming, compelling story, and excellent soundtrack. 

In Celeste, players jump, dash, and climb their way up a mountain through increasingly difficult platforming puzzles. Do you have what it takes to climb the mountain? 
 

Subnautica

Like most survival games, developer Unknown Worlds Entertainment’s Subnautica tasks players with collecting resources and keeping themselves fed and healthy. Subnautica's twist: You're on an aquatic alien planet, and you have to do all the usual resource-collecting and base-building underwater. 

The world of Subnautica is full of exotic flora and fauna to discover and harvest. Players are free to explore, so long as they have enough oxygen. If you’re looking for an underrated survival game with an underwater twist, Subnautica is a great pick.
 

Disco Elysium

Developer ZA/UM’s Disco Elysium may seem like a simple whodunit murder mystery, but that’s just a framework for an existential journey filled with unpredictable twists. 

Disco Elysium is filled with branching narrative options that change based upon the way you choose to play. For instance, an aggressive archetype might try to shake down a suspect while a more intellect-based player might tease what they need out of a conversation. The amazing strangeness of Disco Elysium can’t be confined to a single playthrough, which makes it great for an obscure but robust experience.
