Beat the cold by going somewhere hot this winter

Between the cold weather and holidays, seasonal slumps are worse for some of us who are aching to get away from everyone and find a much warmer climate to hang out in, even if it involves getting shot at.

Just sweating it out in the virtual world can help to a degree, or maybe it is just the distraction that helps, but seeing our hero on the tropical beaches, in oppressively humid jungles, or sweltering warehouses with no air conditioning offers some people better vibes. So, after the turkey is done and before anyone is ready to open presents, here are a few suggestions for warmer destinations that might help us escape the woes of a winter wonderland.

Burnout Paradise Remastered

Let’s take ourselves down to Paradise City and spend a little time cruising the streets insome slick-looking cars. This place has interesting weather, but we’re going to spend most of our time behind the wheel in climate controlled interiors for maximum comfort. There are always people looking to race in this town, and it’s a good way to become familiar with the streets as well as the local tourist attractions, boasting several amazing sights and a few secret pathways.
Burnout Paradise Remastered Slick Ride
There’s a variety of different races and challenges, and most are guaranteed to get the blood pumping if we’re willing to drive a little dangerously while blasting some excellent tunes. For anyone who does want to feel the elements a bit more, there are motorcycles available, and the remastered version comes with all of the extra content and expensive rides, making it worth exploring.

Agatha Christie – Death on the Nile

Why not take a break from playing peacemaker with the family and try being a detective on the Nile River during a scorching hot summer where mystery is afoot? This version of the literary classic changes the time period to the 1970s, making it a bit more groovy and putting players in control of two protagonists that’ll crack this case wide open. Now we’re in a world of fabulous locations, fashion, disco, and excellent mustaches.

Take some time to meet all of the interesting people, get to know everyone and build on their profiles, or walk on the deck of the S.S. Karnak and see some of Egypt’s most beautiful sights, but don’t forget that there’s a murder to solve. If relaxing on the deck or by the pool becomes too tedious, put the pieces together and confront the people who look guilty. The game mechanics and puzzles are quite forgiving, but it’s never good form to finger the wrong perp.

Tomb Raider 1-VI Remastered

Lara Croft is always out on an adventure of some sort, journeying to the four corners, searching for artifacts, and surviving dangerous trials. Many of her games offer a great variety of locations, but she’s often seen exploring tropical islands or cutting through dense jungles, somehow still managing to look stunning no matter how hot the situations get. Although there are several contenders in this collection of classic titles, Tomb Raider 3 might be the best opportunity to feel the heat.

Lara finds herself in search of the Infada Artifact, taking her to dangerous hot beds in India, Nevada, and Indonesia, all places where she’ll need her shades and a lot of sunscreen. Some of these puzzles may make it feel more like work than a vacation, but that doesn’t mean our heroine isn’t having a good time while she works on her tan.

Red Dead Redemption

For those who don’t mind putting a few miles in on their horse, grab a cowboy hat and experience the decline of the Wild West, or at least frontier life as we know it. Cowboys spent a lot of time under that ruthless sun, but our hero John Marston made everything he does look so cool.

The second act of the game sees us opting for a change in scenery as we travel to Northern Mexico, chasing down our targets, meeting legendary gunslingers, getting in the middle of a civil war, and taking some time out to work on those shooting skills. It’s a rough country filled with the smell of gunpowder and blood, where even the wildlife is hungry for our deaths, and if we combine that with the hostile locals, this doesn’t feel like an appropriate vacation spot. However, the temperatures are high and we’ll never get bored here, so it’s worth considering.

Tropico 6

Some people really can’t leave work behind, even when they are supposed to be relaxing, so how about stepping away to a tropical archipelago and taking over as El Presidente? Some people say being a dictator is hard, but this game is pretty easy to get into for people who like micromanaging (especially on Sandbox mode) and getting to decide how paradise runs and what it offers.

Players may not be able to walk around and explore in Tropico the way we do other games, but there are still white sandy beaches, waterfalls, lush jungles, and colorful bungalows to see. Choose the best way to rule, just be careful that the citizens don’t have a good reason to rebel, because that rarely ends well.

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2

There’s a dingy old warehouse near the bad part of town that most people avoid, but as long as we don’t mind the grime, that weird smell in the back corner, or the lack of AC, it’s the perfect place to go practice. All of the legends have come here at some point, leaving their sweat, blood, and a few tears on these stained ramps.
Tony Hawk Pro Skater Warehouse
Sure, the place doesn’t look appealing, but it’s easy to spend a crazy amount of hours here, focusing on the board, zoning out and forgetting the real world as we improve our craft. Need a break from the stuffy heat? Just head to the office or scope out this masterful graffiti. My only suggestion if anyone is going to hang out here for long: Get a tetanus shot.

Dead Island 2

I’d say we should take a trip to the West Coast this time of year, maybe Los Angeles, if not for all the rotten zombies! Still, the weather is nice, and this is one infestation that helps us work on our cardio and see the sights, since they’re mostly abandoned. Gotta love rummaging through these expensive houses and having no lines at the hot spots.

If things get too messy, we can pause for a dip in a number of impressive swimming pools, or just sunbathe in random backyards before heading down to the shops to find the best summer fits, all of which are free after a small undead apocalypse. Enjoy the fun and relaxation, but remember this is a quarantine zone, and rumor has it this is all some giant government experiment, so stock up on weapons to avoid having your vacation ended abruptly.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas – The Definitive Edition

Sure, Vice City might seem like the bigger resort locale, but if we’re looking at more than just the climate, the temperature is steadily rising in Los Santos as all of the gangs fight over their turf. The pavement is hot enough the fry an egg, and ice cream melts faster than the kids can eat it.
GTA San Andreas Bike Ride
Here we go again, so grab a bike and get a fresh haircut before hitting the gym or basketball court, but more importantly, make sure you’re strapped when representing Grove Street. The cops are out in force as well, but nothing gets the sweat going like running from Officer Tenpenny and his corrupt friends, or chasing down people who disrespect the family. Just bring a change of clothes in case we decide to hit up the casino in Las Venturas or that club in San Fierro later.

Far Cry 3

Jason Brody and his friends may be having a nightmare of a vacation, but that doesn’t mean they can’t still take a moment out to enjoy this fantastic getaway. The Rook Islands are stunning to visit, even with all the pirates who want to sell our loved ones into slavery. Be careful of the women here as well: They’re gorgeous to look at, but equally as deadly with one wrong choice.

It seems like everyone around here is a little frazzled from all of the sun and drugs. It’s easy to get into the groove, liberating outposts and burning fields with a flamethrower while listening to a few killer tunes. This place has a lot to offer: beautiful beaches, guns, hunting wild animals, jeeps to cruise around in, crafts, and free tattoos. It might take a little bit to get used to the local customs, but how could anyone not want to come back here?
