A day and a night in Cyberpunk 2077

Ah, Night City, a place I’ve heard so much about but never had the chance to visit for myself. Actually, that’s a lie. I could have visited anytime—but probably lacked the courage. Not long after my arrival at Memorial Park Station, I step outside into an early morning metropolis and immediately find out exactly why that is.

The people of Cyberpunk 2077 are augmented and not exactly friendly, mega buildings tower skywards, and the night lights still blaze away in ignorance of the dawning day. It’s awe inspiring and intimidating in equal measure, like a future vision I wasn’t ready for. There are even video screens built into the road surface, for goodness' sake.

My initial instinct is to head towards the sun, maybe start from the outskirts where I can take in the living city in front of me without being smothered by it. Before escaping the shadow of the tower blocks, I come across a small oasis of serenity. Huge glass cubes contain living trees. I step inside to a haven of tranquility and birdsong. This is apparently the "Center for Behavioral Health." I wonder why it doesn’t seem that popular with other passers-by.

After covering a few blocks, the sheer size of the city is painfully obvious. I brought enough cash to get me by and decide to pick up a car for the day from a nearby Auto Fixer. My chariot awaits—a Mahir Supron FS3, passed down by several careless owners and a vision in metallic brown. With fuel in the car and a burger in my stomach, it’s time to hit the road.

The highway quickly leads out of the city center and towards somewhere known as Rocky Ridge. As the concrete and neon fall away, the road becomes a dusty trail and passes through small suburbs. Run down and dilapidated, the area almost looks abandoned, but I get a sense that there are people here, somewhere. Maybe watching as I cruise through their world.

I reach an array of wind turbines. These are old too, and poorly maintained, but some are still operating and actually quite beautiful against the early morning sun. Out here it’s quiet enough to hear the woosh of the blades as they swing. It’s peaceful and almost comforting but that is abruptly shattered as I approach a nearby fuel station. Something is happening—men with guns, someone on the ground! I don’t think it’s safe here. Good thing I don’t need to stop.

Hills on the horizon tease a potential vantage point, maybe somewhere I can get a good view of the admittedly impressive skyline? As Night City beckons from afar, I don’t even notice that the hills I’m heading to aren’t hills at all, but literal mountains of waste! It’s a shocking sight. I wonder how many of Night City’s inhabitants are aware of what they are contributing to. The air becomes acrid and a voice calls out across some sort of PA system. It’s a warning: “Taking trash is theft”. Haha, and it was looking so tempting too.

After crossing a monumental dam, the road descends in a ribbon of switchbacks and a blanket of red dust sweeps in to meet me at the bottom. It’s a sandstorm and it totally engulfs me and my surroundings. It’s impossible to see more than a few meters, but there are rows and rows of repeating structures emerging from the dense atmosphere. It looks like a solar farm—I hope the city isn’t relying on this place to keep the lights on right now.

With visibility so poor, heading back to civilization seems like the only sensible thing to do. It’s slow progress, even down the main road, but the storm eases just in time to catch a glimpse of a roller coaster. This, I have to visit.

With the sun getting low and dust still hanging in the air, the evidently derelict fairground commands the area with an ominous presence—a sense of happiness lost to the passage of time and the emergence of a much harsher world. An old photograph left on the floor evokes a sense of what things used to be like. I wonder who took it.

As darkness descends, the city lights call me more than ever, and like a moth to a flame, I can’t resist being drawn in. Time to return the car and get to know this place more on foot. An overhead monorail catches the eye thanks to its flamboyantly illuminated cladding. Underneath it, a short tunnel—almost as colorful—turns out to be a fascinating fishbowl.

Everyone in Night City seems to have their own story: some are successful, some down on their luck, others just seem desperate to be seen. A busker tries to catch the eye of a passing girl. Head down, she walks on by, not interested.

By the time I emerge from the other side, the rain is coming down hard. I can’t say that I enjoy getting soaked to the skin, but the weather only enhances the look and feel of this place. Every light bounces back off the wet floor and even people’s umbrellas are glowing. It’s vibrant, it’s alive, and I get it—I’m actually liking it, until suddenly, a reality check.

Police guard a door on the street corner. Armed officers and a decidedly deadly-looking mech. It’s scary but weirdly impressive to imagine what kind of cybernetic badasses must be out there if this is what the law enforcement needs.

With that thought running through my head, I take refuge in a noodle bar. Yagami Market, as it turns out, has some of the best noodles I’ve ever tasted, and the sake isn’t bad either! I indulge perhaps more than I should and can’t help sharing my concerns with others. One of the patrons gives me an address—allegedly a friendlier part of town—and says “Ask for Herold.” Maybe it was the delectable sake thinking for me, but I decide to take the advice and hop on a Metro.

On arrival, there are night clubs, street fights, and an old stadium transformed into a hub of, well, everything this city thrives on. This isn’t a friendly neighborhood, I’ve been duped. Were they trying to get me killed, or just open my eyes? The stadium is dazzling but, for whatever reason, not intimidating now. Instead, I feel overwhelmingly tempted to see what’s inside.

It’s an eclectic mix of more than I even imagined, and I ask around for Herold. Of course, he’s a weapons dealer and he’s nothing if not enthusiastic about his hardware. It goes without saying that I have neither the need nor skill set to handle most of what is on offer, but maybe just a discrete sidearm. You know, for protection.
Cyberpunk 2077 13 Herold
Fresh from my deal with the madman, I stumble across an unassuming door. ”Ripper Doc Open” is emblazoned on the wall. These are the places where people become more than human. I’ve come this far, why not? I step inside and sobering reality hits like a train. Like some sort of nightmare dentist, the surgical chair and room full of implant hardware is enough to scare some sense back into me—even if the Doc himself did cut a pretty cool figure. No, not today!

I scurry away with my metaphorical tail between my non-augmented legs and head somewhere less drastic. Japantown, my last stop before going home. It’s instantly absorbing, and Lele Park is just fantastic. Real trees, holographic trees, clothes shops, food vendors, and outdoor bars. This is more like it. There’s a busy nightlife, though it’s hard not to notice how people come and go—as though there’s somewhere even more appealing to be. There are mentions of somewhere called Jig-Jig Street, perhaps that’s the place.
Cyberpunk 2077 15 Jigjig Street
Right by the intoxicating Cherry Blossom Market, Jig-Jig Street has a life all its own. Awash with neon and scantily clad individuals, it’s obvious even to the most innocent-minded visitors what lies ahead, and it’s more than just the karaoke.

The night seems to go on forever, or maybe I just don’t want it to end. It’s high time I headed home, but Night City has made its impression. I’m here and I might just stay a while.
