In Dying Light: The Beast, returning protagonist Kyle Crane finds himself at the mercy of the ruthless Baron. Years of experimentation since the original Dying Light have turned Crane into a half-human, half-monster hybrid—one who’s able to tap into his primal urges to lay waste to both undead hordes and corrupt soldiers.

But to fully realize his potential, Crane must defeat gargantuan creatures known as Chimeras. Our Dying Light: The Beast Chimera boss guide has all the details you need to help prepare you for the challenging battles ahead.

Chimera bosses and Beast Points

Before we talk about the Chimeras in Dying Light: The Beast, it’s worth talking about Kyle Crane’s Beast Mode power. If you check the lower-right corner of the screen, you’ll notice a red meter. It gradually fills up whenever you hit enemies with melee weapons, perfectly dodge or block a blow, or take damage from hostiles. Once full, Crane automatically enters Beast Mode, which restores his health and boosts his melee damage.

As you progress through the Dying Light: The Beast campaign, you'll encounter Chimeras, formidable boss enemies that will prove challenging even to the more-than-human Kyle Crane. Each Chimera boss that you defeat rewards you with Beast Points, which you can use in a special Beast Mode-centric skill tree to unlock new abilities—like being able to manually activate Beast Mode when it's most needed, a high-speed charge that lets you sprint past enemies, a devastating swipe that hits everything around you, an improved means of using the grappling hook, and more.

The majority of Chimeras in the game summon additional undead minions, so you won't contend with just the boss, but all of the zombies swarming you as well. Be careful, and keep your head on a swivel.

 

The Reaper

The Reaper is the first Chimera boss that you face in Dying Light: The Beast. He appears during the “Safe Haven” mission and thankfully doesn’t pose too much of a challenge. He alternates between a short melee combo and a ramming maneuver. If you position yourself so that the Reaper hits a pillar, he’ll also get stunned temporarily, allowing you to make short work of him.

 

The Defect

The Defect spawns during the “Life After Life” mission once you enter the Town Hall. This creature has stronger melee attacks compared to the Reaper, though the animations are slower as well. Additionally, you have to watch out whenever it throws boulders at your character. This ability has a knockdown effect, and you'll be vulnerable for a few seconds before Crane can get back up.

 

The Mist

The Mist is a Dying Light: The Beast Chimera boss that shows up near the end of the “First Blood” mission. You face The Mist on an island in the middle of a swamp. True to her moniker, fog blankets the entire area, resulting in poor visibility for you and an advantage for her.

The Mist primarily attacks by leaping toward your character before scurrying back to hide in the fog. She can jump off rock formations and even other zombies. Try to be mindful of her whereabouts and chase after her whenever she appears.

 

The Behemoth

You’ll face The Behemoth as part of “A New Strain.” The battle against this Chimera boss takes place in an abandoned junkyard, which has several large cargo containers lying around. You can try to shoot The Behemoth from afar, but we recommend getting up close and personal with your melee weapons, as well as your Beast Mode transformation whenever it’s available.

The Behemoth has a fairly predictable attack pattern if you’re within melee range:

• It will stomp on the ground, creating a shockwave that hits in an arc, both forward and back.
• This is followed by a couple of lumbering swipes that deal high damage.
• Ideally, you should dodge the stomp so you can swiftly swoop in for a quick slash with your melee weapon. Then, move backward until it finishes its clubbing swings. Strike it twice, move backward, and repeat the same actions as before.

Later, the Behemoth will call on more undead to join the fray. As usual, be wary of enemies surrounding you as you continue attacking the boss whenever the opportunity presents itself.

 

The Toxin

The Toxin battle occurs during the aptly named “Toxic Relationships” mission. This foe’s movement patterns are akin to that of The Mist’s, since it keeps jumping around. Worse, it spews poisonous blobs that create a damaging cloud of gas.

On the bright side, the arena has several pillars you can hop between, allowing you to reposition as often as you'd like. You should have the grappling hook at this point in the campaign—master its use so you can quickly move from one spot to another and outmaneuver The Toxin.

 

The Matriarch

The Matriarch might be one of the toughest Dying Light: The Beast Chimera bosses. The encounter takes place in a large factory at the end of the mission “Requiem for a Scream,” and there's a good chance you’ll end up screaming in frustration due to how chaotic this fight gets.

The Matriarch's main threat is that she continuously summons at least two undead runners whenever she screeches. She also periodically disappears in a puff of smoke and leaps toward you, much like The Mist.

The goal for this fight is to track down the Matriarch whenever she hides in one of the factory’s nooks. An indicator appears onscreen that will lead you in her general direction. That said, you'll also have to contend with the infected whenever they rush your location.

 

The Wraith

The battle against The Wraith, which happens in “One Flew Over the Volatiles’ Nest,” is part of one of the most harrowing sequences in the game. In it, you have to enter a cave full of Volatiles. Since these creatures can tear you apart easily, you must advance through the area stealthily.

And speaking of stealth, the Wraith’s main ability is its camouflage. It completely disappears from view before reemerging to slash your character. Ideally, you should have your shotgun ready to blast it at point-blank range. It’s also possible to toss items with lingering effects, such as Molotov Cocktails, to burn your target just as it lunges for you.

 

The Colossus

The Colossus is the last Dying Light: The Beast Chimera boss fight…if we’re talking about the encounters that grant Beast Points. You go up against it during the “Buried Truths” mission where you have to investigate a water treatment facility.

Don’t let The Colossus’s size fool you—it walks slowly, but it can also bulldoze you just like the Reaper. This towering Chimera is highly resistant to most forms to damage too. However, if you destroy the biohazard crates whenever it’s nearby, the poison slowly corrodes The Colossus's defense. As soon as you see that your target’s health bar has turned green (meaning it’s poisoned) fire away and hope for the best.

 

The Chimeras

Defeating The Colossus nets you the final Beast Points to round out Kyle Crane’s newfound powers, but you'll still have to face regular Chimera bosses, such as the ones in “Cries Trapped in the Walls.”

Initially, you only have to eliminate one large Chimera. Then, you have to contend with two. We suggest looking for rooftops or platforms that you can stand on as you dodge their boulder throws. Your best bet is to shoot these monsters from a distance or blow them up with grenades. Eventually an ally will assist you once one of the creatures has been significantly weakened.
