Everything you need to know about Valorant's sniper shotgun, the Outlaw

Meet Valorant’s newest weapon, the Outlaw. This sniper shotgun is the first new weapon to be added to the five-versus-five competitive shooter, and it’s creating its own space in the game's arsenal.
The Outlaw: facts
The Outlaw costs 2,400 credits and has quite a lot of bang for its buck. It does 238 damage to the head, 140 to the body, and 119 to the legs. This damage applies to all ranges. With high penetration, it can also shoot through walls and boxes with deadly damage.
Its price makes it a bit too expensive to be an economy buy unless your Agent has extremely cheap abilities and you happen to have a bit more credits than the rest of your team. It more than makes up for its cost, but it can be a hard buy because of it. It also has a 100% fire rate, and it can hold two bullets in the chamber and ten additional bullets. It has a 2.5x zoom sight, the same as the Marshal.
In its category, it’s considered the mid-tier option between the Marshal (at 950 credits) and the Operator (at 4,700 credits).
Tips for using the Outlaw
The sheer damage from the Outlaw is enough to entice anyone to pick one up, but there are a few things to know about it—it’s not as easy as just aiming and shooting.
First, the chamber of the Outlaw only has two bullets, meaning you’ll have to reload after just two shots. And since you know this, your enemies will as well. Most players will know to rush you after hearing two Outlaw shots, which are very distinct, and some will even rush you after hearing one. While the reload time isn’t long, every second counts when an enemy Jett is dashing into you. Using that same thought process, you can use this to your advantage when you’re playing an Agent like Jett, who has a quick escape to cover the reload time.
Second, don’t discount the amount of money it costs to buy. At 2,400 credits, it's only 500 credits less than prime options like the Phantom or Vandal. While the damage and quick shooting is appealing, don’t put yourself in a bad economic situation to get it. With that being said, if you’re forcing a buy, it can be an excellent weapon—especially on turn two if you’ve won the pistol round. (Check out our guide to optimizing your economy in Valorant for more on this). In many cases, a Sheriff or Guardian will suffice (and both are cheaper options).
You can also combine it with a pistol for a better second option compared to the Marshal sniper rifle. Because it’s so cheap, you can opt for a gun with more bullets for a well-rounded loadout, such as the Frenzy, Ghost, or Sheriff. These work better at close ranges, and then you have the Outlaw for any long-range fights. For sites like Icebox that have long lines of sight, it can be a good setup, especially if you don’t have enough for an Operator.
Third, control your trigger finger. The biggest downfall the Outlaw has is its consistent need to reload. Combined with the incredibly quick shooting, it’s easy to be stuck waiting for more bullets instead of taking down your opponents. If you miss the first shot, it’s better to take a few seconds, aim correctly, and try again. At the same time, you can evaluate the situation before shooting the first bullet to stop enemies from rushing you.
Finally, it can’t help to do a few practice rounds with the Outlaw before taking it into a competitive game. It’s a great weapon, but it does have its quirks, and it’s good to get a feel for them before picking it up randomly for the first time when your rank (and others’ ranks) depends on it. Make sure to get a sense of timing when it comes to the reload speed and the time in-between shots.
