A demo for Onimusha: Way of the Sword hit Epic Games Store this week, giving fans of the nearly three-decade-old franchise a chance to explore a twisted version of an Edo-era Kyoto and eventually take on Sasaki Ganryu.

In the demo, players get a chance to wield the magic-infused Oni Armaments for special attacks. Of course, they also get to experience the varied swordplay action so notable in this latest offering.

In the culmination of the demo, players take on Sasaki Kojiro. Like many others in the upcoming game, Kojiro is a real historic person. The real Kojiro was a Japanese swordsman who lived during the Azuchi-Momoyama and early Edo periods. He died in 1612 in a famous duel with Miyamoto Musashi, who happens to be the game’s protagonist.

The real Musashi was famed for his double-bladed swordsmanship and the fact that he was never defeated over the course of 62 duels. He was also the author of The Book of Five Rings and The Path of Aloneness

We got our first look at Musashi when the Capcom-developed and published action-adventure game wowed audiences during its Game Awards reveal in December 2024. Then at last year’s Summer Game Fest it once more blew people away during a behind-closed-doors theater demo.

During that live demo, we got a chance to watch a dev expertly maneuver Musashi (who’s in-game face is modeled after the late great Japanese actor Toshiro Mifune), as he faced off against the game’s monstrous Genma using both his standard weapons and the Oni Gauntlet, which can absorb Genma souls.

While the saved data from the demo can't be carried over into the base game, if you have saved data from the demo you can receive a Kubi Akari charm, which strengthen's Musashi's abilities,  when you play the full game.

After you check out the demo, you can pre-purchase Onimusha: Way of the Sword on Epic Games Store. It’s scheduled to hit Sept. 26, 2026.
