Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands’ character customization is a wonderful thing. The recently released looter-shooter-RPGer hands the players a level of character crafting rarely embraced in gaming. The six classes are merely a template for you to tweak, and you can do so in-game, at any time, for free. That sort of latitude encourages experimentation, and Wonderlands has a secret method of customization that lets you do to a face the sort of thing that would get a Halloween mask maker fired. 

It’s an innocuous option in the customization screen called “Slider Override” that defaults to “Disengaged”. What does it mean? What part of the body is the “Slider”, and do you want to “Override” it? Do we really need to ask you that? You don’t play a Tiny Tina Bunkers and Badasses campaign to worry about what the options do. No, you play it to engage every option possible, despite the warnings. 

When you create a character, the sliders only go up to a certain amount, and that amount, generally speaking, leaves your character looking pretty human. Or Orcish, if that's your thing. You have lots of options, unbound by old-fashioned notions of symmetry and gender. But you can’t put a nose between your eyes unless you engage the slider override, which really opens up the character customization. The Fatemaker’s facial fate is in your hands. 

We played around with the face sliders, features, and decorations to create some Fatemakers, showing just how capable the creator is. We’ve also crafted some character descriptions, because this is an RPG, and every face has to justify itself. 
 

Fishbowl

They say people eventually end up looking like their pets, but poor Fishbowl here couldn’t afford the fish. They stared longingly at their fish-free bowl and ended up looking like… well, the bowl. All the sliders in the center are at maximum, though the nose height is set to the middle of the slider. If you slide the ear sliders all the way to their smallest, it accentuates the effect. As does the eyeshadow.

Peak Peek

One game mechanic that Tina Tina’s Wonderlands does not include is corner peeking. That is when you place your game character next to a wall’s edge and lean out slightly to look at what’s around the corner. Fret not! You can do what we did and simply make one eye significantly larger than the other. The addition of the “Edgy Backstory” haircut really frames the eye. This look only works on corners on the right side. If you want to look around a corner on the left with this face, you're going to have a bad time. Disclaimer: this doesn’t actually affect gameplay. 

Manfred Humanperson

“Hello, fellow bipeds! My, what a lovely day it is on the planet of my birth. We are truly blessed to have a normal gravitational pull and acid-free air. Fear not; that’s just hair on top of my head and definitely not a throbbing, exposed brain with which I use to read your every thought. My scaly, green skin is simply an allergic reaction, which I believe you humans suffer from when you accidentally swallow sea creatures. Did I say “you humans”? Whoops. Please look into this light for a second.” 

Maxwell Face

With all the sliders uncoupled, there’s nothing stopping you from selecting maximum face. You simply push all the sliders to the right. Maxwell Face has the very last selection from every choice available to the player on both Facial Features and Facial Decoration pages. With the sliders unbound, the player’s lips stick through the mask, and we didn’t notice until the “Molten Noble” lipstick was applied, which just goes to show the value of careful grooming. Also, somewhere in there is a Wyvern face tattoo. 

Minnie Face

The sliders don’t just go all the way up. They also go all the way down. With a few judicious selections here and there, you can have the least amount of face that the game allows. All the sliders down, no hair, no eyebrows, the smallest mouth and nose, and even some trimmed down ears. The blankest canvas and completely unbeatable at poker. 

Not a Hedgehog

We’ll level with you here. This started as an attempt at creating a certain speedy character from a certain gaming company. It started with the hair, but fell apart from there. Not even unlocked sliders could make the skin blue enough (“Exhumed” is as close as we got), or the eyes merge into one ocular extremity. So we panicked and created a negative image of the famous character. We have found the limits of the character creator: copyright.
